Anyone got suggestions from the heavier end of the metal spectrum? I've lost touch with new stuff for a couple of decades now.
I need some examples of what you mean by heavy. There is so much out there now in so many different subgenres. The Accept track I posted is somewhat on the heavy side along with the Firewind track. The two most recent Dream Theater albums are also pretty much on the heavy side.
For "heavy" I mean thrash, death, or doom.
Well a lot of the big bands are still around and releasing new material, including Anthrax, Megadeath, Cannibal Corpse, Job for a Cowboy, Cradle of Filth, Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Lamb of God, and Overkill among others. I can't suggest specific tracks from these but I do know they are often considered to be consistently solid.

I heard a special interview last night on the radio hosted by Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins frontman) with Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush. It was a behind-the-scenes-type discussion about Rush's new album released last week, "Clockwork Angels."
Peppered throughout the interview, I heard two sample tracks from the new album: "Clockwork Angels" and "The Garden." Both were extremely impressive, but "The Garden" in particular is absolutely wonderful and is sure to be one of the future Rush classics! Aside from "Subdivisions," "Limelight," and a few select other tracks, I've never been a huge Rush fan, but I'm very strongly considering making the investment in this, their 20TH, album.
Highly recommended to all prog/metal fans!

Jehannum, if you're willing, please tell me some of your favorite artists in the aforementioned genres - I would LOVE to help you out my friend! Of the three, my primary area of knowledge is definitely death, but I'm sure I could make a few recommendations regardless!

That's cool. My problem is I stopped listening to new stuff after about 1991 (except for Metallica and Sabbath) and have completely lost touch with new metal (or nu metal, whatever that is).
Blind Guardian? Jag Panzer? Evergrey? - Never heard or heard of these groups. 
Iron Maiden: Bruce Dickinson (solo, latter-day)? Queensryche? Communic? - Not heard of the last one but of course familiar with Bruce & Queensryche (Operation Mindcrime etc.)
Death: (Oh so many...LOVE this group!) Control Denied? Arsis? Iced Earth? Hypocrisy? Nevermore? Machine Head? - Never heard any songs by these groups. Might be promising. I'd be interested in hearing your recommendations from 2000 and after.

Well, thanks for helping. Some of the criteria I'm looking for are:
- good masculine voices, not high-pitched squealing vocals
- great guitar riffs, not neoclassical shred soloing. I much prefer pentatonic guitar players like Hammett and Iommi.
- heaviness / power. I like music that could batter (or grind) castle walls.
- European influence (Germanic, Nordic) is good for metal.

Man, there's a TON I want to recommend! I'll try to keep it simple, and provide links to the albums of my initial recommendations for each artist. Feel free to email me directly (check my profile) for further recommendations or details on almost any of these (songs, further albums, etc.). Most of these bands I still listen to, to this day, and I'd love to help introduce you to more great music my friend!
Blind Guardian: VERY similar to Helloween, power metal.

Iced Earth: Power/thrash metal of the highest order. This group was actually one who got me into heavier-than-Metallica music to begin with. Absolutely killer riffs! My favorite album, "Dark Saga," was based on the "Spawn" graphic novel series, but I'm recommending the "Horror Show" album here to remain post-2000.

Slaughter was a post-glam band from the late 80s / early 90s, great melody but somewhat cheesy like the glam bands of old. Skid Row's debut came out in 1990, I would argue after the "glam" swell was over, but some still consider them an 80's band. I recommend you check YouTube for "Quicksand Jesus" and let me know what you think.

OK so I didn't want to turn this into a general metal and rock thread but metal has been slow to flow lately and yet I've found some fantastic rock bands recently. With the line between metal and rock so blurred anyway here we go!!
First, I have a track from the new band Million$Reload out of Ireland. This is their second album but seems to be much bigger than the first. These guys have a fantastic sound (thanks to some stellar mastering) just what I want to hear from hard rock, and a fabulous vocalist!!
Second, I have a track from the metal band Fozzy off their new album Sin and Bones. I'd never heard of these guys before I found their new album and was blown away by the quality of the music, even if the mastering is pretty bad. These guys have a very heavy metal sound but also fantastic guitar/drum writing and smoking solos. I don't really like the singer but he has some good parts and isn't painful to listen to. A shame that the main guitarist and drummer seem to also play for another band that is -gag- rap metal...
Not necessarily my cup of tea, but Million$Reload sound interesting - kind of like a melodic AC/DC mixed with Buckcherry. Nice find!
Fozzy, if I recall from "That Metal Show," have WWE wrestler Chris Jericho as their singer. Not really a fan of their music at all, sounds too generic.
Either way, keep it up my friend - great stuff on this thread!
