Yup, all the classic names are represented and lots of new bands to check out. For a small country, we're lucky to have these big & renowned festivals (Graspop, Pukkelpop, Rock Werchter), always drawing big names and lots of fans. The metal/rock/alternative scene is still big here.

Anyone got suggestions from the heavier end of the metal spectrum? I've lost touch with new stuff for a couple of decades now.

I need some examples of what you mean by heavy. There is so much out there now in so many different subgenres. The Accept track I posted is somewhat on the heavy side along with the Firewind track. The two most recent Dream Theater albums are also pretty much on the heavy side.

For "heavy" I mean thrash, death, or doom.

Not a big metal fan, but I still play an album like Hysteria (1987) by Def Leppard from time to time. Really not a weak song on that one.

Here is GODS OF WAR:

Well a lot of the big bands are still around and releasing new material, including Anthrax, Megadeath, Cannibal Corpse, Job for a Cowboy, Cradle of Filth, Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Lamb of God, and Overkill among others. I can't suggest specific tracks from these but I do know they are often considered to be consistently solid.

Jehannum, if you're willing, please tell me some of your favorite artists in the aforementioned genres - I would LOVE to help you out my friend! Of the three, my primary area of knowledge is definitely death, but I'm sure I could make a few recommendations regardless!

I heard a special interview last night on the radio hosted by Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins frontman) with Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush. It was a behind-the-scenes-type discussion about Rush's new album released last week, "Clockwork Angels."

Peppered throughout the interview, I heard two sample tracks from the new album: "Clockwork Angels" and "The Garden." Both were extremely impressive, but "The Garden" in particular is absolutely wonderful and is sure to be one of the future Rush classics! Aside from "Subdivisions," "Limelight," and a few select other tracks, I've never been a huge Rush fan, but I'm very strongly considering making the investment in this, their 20TH, album.

Highly recommended to all prog/metal fans!

Sorry about the delay in replying. I forgot to check the thread.

I like quite a range ... Metallica, Nuclear Assault, Helloween, Candlemass, Slayer, Maiden, Death, Sabbath, Motorhead, Maiden, AC/DC (Bon Scott), Not Fragile, Scorpions, Anthrax.

Dislike: Def Leppard, Guns & Roses, Judas Priest, Pantera, Manowar, Kiss, glam, AOR.

Hmm...lots of ideas here. Let's do this - I'll share a few recommended artists based on a few of your likes (they may or may not be "similar" artists in terms of same genre/subgenre). If you're not familiar with any of the recommendations and are interested, let me know and I'll give you some deeper info and personal recommendations. You down?

Helloween: Blind Guardian? Jag Panzer? Evergrey?
Iron Maiden: Bruce Dickinson (solo, latter-day)? Queensryche? Communic?
Death: (Oh so many...LOVE this group!) Control Denied? Arsis? Iced Earth? Hypocrisy? Nevermore? Machine Head?
Scorpions: Dokken? Dio?
Anthrax: Megadeth? Overkill?

And I'm assuming based on your dislikes that Mercyful Fate / King Diamond, Slaughter, and Skid Row are off the table?

Let me know what you think my friend!

That's cool. My problem is I stopped listening to new stuff after about 1991 (except for Metallica and Sabbath) and have completely lost touch with new metal (or nu metal, whatever that is).

Blind Guardian? Jag Panzer? Evergrey? - Never heard or heard of these groups. smile

Iron Maiden: Bruce Dickinson (solo, latter-day)? Queensryche? Communic? - Not heard of the last one but of course familiar with Bruce & Queensryche (Operation Mindcrime etc.)

Death: (Oh so many...LOVE this group!) Control Denied? Arsis? Iced Earth? Hypocrisy? Nevermore? Machine Head? - Never heard any songs by these groups. Might be promising. I'd be interested in hearing your recommendations from 2000 and after.

Scorpions: Dokken? Dio? - Love Dio, not Dokken.

Anthrax: Megadeth? Overkill? - Don't really like Megadeth. Overkill ... wow! Many, many moons since I listened to them. That's actually a good suggestion, and thanks for reminding me of them!

And I'm assuming based on your dislikes that Mercyful Fate / King Diamond, Slaughter, and Skid Row are off the table? - Not keen on KD's voice. Don't know much about the other two but I'm guessing not my thing.

Let me know what you think my friend!

Well, thanks for helping. Some of the criteria I'm looking for are:

- good masculine voices, not high-pitched squealing vocals

- great guitar riffs, not neoclassical shred soloing. I much prefer pentatonic guitar players like Hammett and Iommi.

- heaviness / power. I like music that could batter (or grind) castle walls.

- European influence (Germanic, Nordic) is good for metal.

PS. Sorry about the bad quote formatting ^

Man, there's a TON I want to recommend! I'll try to keep it simple, and provide links to the albums of my initial recommendations for each artist. Feel free to email me directly (check my profile) for further recommendations or details on almost any of these (songs, further albums, etc.). Most of these bands I still listen to, to this day, and I'd love to help introduce you to more great music my friend!

Blind Guardian: VERY similar to Helloween, power metal.
At the Edge of Time (2010) - http://www.amazon.com/At-The-Edge-Of-Time/dp/B003VON1S0/ref=tmm_msc_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1340253388&sr=1-1

Jag Panzer: KILLER riffs and ripping solos, great power metal from a sadly now-defunct band. Chris Broderick, their former lead guitarist, actually plays for Megadeth now.
The Fourth Judgement (1997) - http://www.amazon.com/Fourth-Judgement-Reis-Jag-Panzer/dp/B000PAAI2A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340256693&sr=8-1&keywords=jag+panzer+fourth

Evergrey: Stretch recommendation. They're gothic metal, but very emotive and melodic without being cheesy. Fantastic guitar work and keyboards.
Recreation Day (2003) - http://www.amazon.com/Recreation-day/dp/B000WTAAKY/ref=tmm_msc_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1340256815&sr=1-1

Dickinson: If you haven't heard his solo work in the last 15 years or so, you are missing out. It rivals some of the best iconic Maiden records in my mind.
Accident of Birth (1997) - http://www.amazon.com/Accident-Birth-Dlx-Bruce-Dickinson/dp/B0009NCP9W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340256860&sr=8-1&keywords=dickinson+accident

Queensryche: My first acquisition was Empire, but I love their entire catalog from 2000 and before. Recommend "Promised Land" if you haven't heard it, or, for old-school, check out their debut!
Promised Land (1994) - http://www.amazon.com/Promised-Land-Queensryche/dp/B00009L1UR/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1340256965&sr=1-2&keywords=queensryche+promised

Communic: Very underrated Norwegian power/prog metal band. Their material has grown increasingly boring with time, but their debut is excellent - very melodic with great vocals, changing time signatures, and both structured riffs and great guitar solos.
Conspiracy In Mind (2005) - http://www.amazon.com/Conspiracy-Mind-Communic/dp/B00074050E/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1340257063&sr=1-1&keywords=communic+conspiracy

Control Denied: Death frontman Chuck Schuldiner's power metal project, who sadly only released one album before Chuck's untimely death. This is an absolute masterpiece - imagine the best riffs and song structures of Death mixed with power metal vocals!
Fragile Art of Existence (1998) - http://www.amazon.com/The-Fragile-Art-Existence-Reissue/dp/B004BNFD4U/ref=tmm_msc_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1340257164&sr=1-1

Arsis: Melodic death metal, somewhat more technical recently. Their debut album "A Celebration of Guilt" will rip your effing face off both in terms of brutality and utter melody - VERY highly recommended and will make your head spin.
Celebration of Guilt (2004) - http://www.amazon.com/A-Celebration-of-Guilt/dp/B0026LWLTO/ref=tmm_msc_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1340257322&sr=8-1

Iced Earth: Power/thrash metal of the highest order. This group was actually one who got me into heavier-than-Metallica music to begin with. Absolutely killer riffs! My favorite album, "Dark Saga," was based on the "Spawn" graphic novel series, but I'm recommending the "Horror Show" album here to remain post-2000.
Horror Show (2001) - http://www.amazon.com/Horror-Show-Iced-Earth/dp/B00005K9ZU/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1340257475&sr=1-1&keywords=iced+earth+horror

Hypocrisy: Melodic death metal. I've been a huge fan for a long time; their most recent material rivals their oldest and best stuff. My highest recommendation is "The Arrival," the first album of theirs I bought. Wonderful!
The Arrival (2004) - http://www.amazon.com/The-Arrival/dp/B000QZX2Z4/ref=tmm_msc_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1340257580&sr=1-1

Nevermore: I'm not a huge fan of this band, but Jeff Loomis, their guitarist, knows riffs inside and out. The vocalist turns me off, but if you're into both power metal and great riffage, you'll love 'em!
This Godless Endeavor (2005) - http://www.amazon.com/This-Godless-Endeavor-Nevermore/dp/B0009YNSG0/ref=sr_1_4?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1340257661&sr=1-4&keywords=nevermore

Machine Head: Initial work was post-groove metal a la Pantera, but more recently they've taken on a technical/melodic thrash/death type of vibe. Their 1994 debut is still my favorite in spite of the complexity they've built into their more recent tunes. If this turns you off check out "The Blackening" album instead.
Burn My Eyes (1994) - http://www.amazon.com/Burn-My-Eyes-Machine-Head/dp/B000000H6G/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1340257796&sr=1-1&keywords=machine+head+burn+my+eyes

Dio: I'm not intimately familiar with Ronnie's work in Rainbow or Dio, but can make one very encouraged recommendation.
The Devil You Know (2009)- http://www.amazon.com/The-Devil-Know-Heaven-Hell/dp/B001UREJWM/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1340257858&sr=1-2&keywords=heaven+and+hell

Overkill: Not a huge fan of these guys either, but respect them for their legendary status. Riffs from even their most recent albums are awesome!
The Electric Age (2012) - http://www.amazon.com/The-Electric-Age-Overkill/dp/B00701QVVY/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1340257926&sr=1-1&keywords=overkill

King Diamond: I have to recommend this album in spite of your dislike of KD's vocals. The guitars are unbelievable on this one.
Puppet Master (2003) - http://www.amazon.com/The-Puppet-Master/dp/B001M5HS3O/ref=tmm_msc_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1340258051&sr=1-1

Slaughter was a post-glam band from the late 80s / early 90s, great melody but somewhat cheesy like the glam bands of old. Skid Row's debut came out in 1990, I would argue after the "glam" swell was over, but some still consider them an 80's band. I recommend you check YouTube for "Quicksand Jesus" and let me know what you think.

Hope this helps! Again, feel free to email for any further info!

That's quite a list, and I'm looking forward to going through it. Cheers!

There's one thing on the list I already have: The Devil You Know by Dio-fronted Heaven & Hell, because it's essentially a Black Sabbath variant. Bible Black is a great song.

If Bruce Dickinson's solo work is as good as the classic Iron Maiden years then I will definitely check it out. Saw Maiden in Dublin a couple of years ago. Good gig but they played mainly new stuff I didn't know.

I listened to 'em all and your stretch recommendation is the clear favourite! Vocals have a sensible range, emotion & power. Riffs are melodic and catchy. Lead guitar inventive, not technical wankery. I'll be checking out some full tracks on YouTube. Thanks for the lead.

Got a few suggestions here based on your criteria smile I don't really like very many lower range vocals but I tried to keep off the super high stuff.

Narnia - Curse of a Generation
Narnia is a Christian Power Metal band but they had a bit of a heavier sound on the new album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSUGJYhGLJw

Invictus - Persecution
This is a progressive metal band from France that writes concept albums. This is from their latest album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyyVCL1wzUM

Fool's Game - Reality Divine
Heavy progressive metal from the USA.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8t8M3Db38Q
A few more samples on their myspace page. http://www.myspace.com/foolsgameband

Future's End - Memoirs of a Broken Man
Progressive Metal from the USA.
http://www.myspace.com/futuresendband

Grand Magus - The Hunt
70s style heavy metal.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAx8tiOplBc

Outworld - Outworld
Real shame these guys never released another album after this, but the vocalist has gone on to many other projects. The vocals are fairly high pitched at some times but I can't get enough of the singing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0IkQJqL3kk

Lion's Share - Dark Hours
If you like the singer, he is also on Wuthering Heights and Astral Doors. I'm a huge fan of Wuthering Heights but it doesn't really fit the criteria asked for and can't really stand Astral Doors.

KAMELOT announces a new singer! They got the singer from Seventh Wonder - Tommy Karevik

I have to admit I thought it was going to be impossible for anyone to replace Khan, but this is probably one of the best choices they could have made for a new vocalist!

OK so I didn't want to turn this into a general metal and rock thread but metal has been slow to flow lately and yet I've found some fantastic rock bands recently. With the line between metal and rock so blurred anyway here we go!!

First, I have a track from the new band Million$Reload out of Ireland. This is their second album but seems to be much bigger than the first. These guys have a fantastic sound (thanks to some stellar mastering) just what I want to hear from hard rock, and a fabulous vocalist!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Npj6s8Ns1g

Second, I have a track from the metal band Fozzy off their new album Sin and Bones. I'd never heard of these guys before I found their new album and was blown away by the quality of the music, even if the mastering is pretty bad. These guys have a very heavy metal sound but also fantastic guitar/drum writing and smoking solos. I don't really like the singer but he has some good parts and isn't painful to listen to. A shame that the main guitarist and drummer seem to also play for another band that is -gag- rap metal...

Not necessarily my cup of tea, but Million$Reload sound interesting - kind of like a melodic AC/DC mixed with Buckcherry. Nice find!

Fozzy, if I recall from "That Metal Show," have WWE wrestler Chris Jericho as their singer. Not really a fan of their music at all, sounds too generic.

Either way, keep it up my friend - great stuff on this thread!

Baroness. Yellow & Green. Released last month. These boys come from my home state of Georgia. This album is sooooo fucking good, the best Metal album since Kylesa or Mastodon put anything out.

I'm actually going to see Kamelot next month in the DC area. I can't wait, especially since the new vocalist sounds really good.

I've also really been enjoying Luca Turilli's Rhapsody's (Rhapsody of Fire are TWO bands now!) new album a lot these days.

I used to like Rhapsody of Fire and then they got even more cheesy sounding and I lost interest in their previous album. Then I think Luca Turilli is even less interesting because I've never liked his voice. Still, I'm glad you enjoy it and I hope you enjoy Kamelot. I was interested in going to their new tour but I'm not really interested in seeing Nightwish after the last album wasn't really my thing. At least down here in San Diego, they are playing together.
