Thor, the 3D images were quite spectacular for a kid - the different "layers" of images really "stood out" (ha!). The first Viewmasters used batteries to illuminate the images from inside, the later ones (the one you remember?) had a kind of window at the back which let the light in (if there was any light around you could point it at).

I've been told that Viewmaster actually had guys present with the 3D cameras at tv and movie shoots.

I also had the LOST IN SPACE Set. I remember it was the episode with the Frozen Prison Space Ship. Cool. Loved the colors.

"As of July 2009, DreamWorks SKG was negotiating for the rights to develop View-Master into a feature film."
I'd be curious to know what they do with it. Maybe some kid will find a magic Viewmaster in his grandfather's attic, and it will be a portal to the places depicted in the reels. It will be the first film of its kind.

Man, did I love Viewmasters when I was a kid. Had tons! Really loved POSEIDON ADVENTURE and KING KONG ones. Almost as good as the Anobile movie photonovels!

I still have King Kong and Star Trek: The Motion Picture (with Robert Abel FX shots, i think).
I've got some of the Marvel Comics sets, Spider-Man, Captain America, and The Mighty Thor.

Back when eBay first began, I got a bunch of classic Viewmaster viewers and some really wonderful reels for them. They all still work beautifully - I love them dearly.

One of the things I've found really interesting about Viewmaster reel subjects, with regards to ones licensed from various entertainment properties, is the selections could be fairly scattershot and unpredictable in terms of what movies and shows and such got VM treatment (aside from generally being from things kids would be interested in), and to what extent. There are Viewmaster reels for things that got extremely little in the way of other merchandising - I've got the reels for The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (which the VM set refers to simply as "Buckaroo Banzai"), and I understand there's a set for the incredibly little-seen Twice Upon a Time, of all things - while big, major productions with tons of other merchandise often don't have any (have there ever been any Star Wars ones, for example?). And there are also reels for the expected, big, popular things like Star Trek and Superman and so on, but here, too, the treatment varies - for some projects, they just used "conversions" (I use that in the loosest possible sense) from 2d publicity stills and such, resulting in highly inferior "cutout"-style stereo images, but for others they would actually send their own stereo photographers to the sets and locations of movie and TV productions, and get excellent 3d photos from those productions (that aren't published elsewhere, even in 2d).
I have a couple Indiana Jones sets they did back in the day. One is called "The Legend of Indiana Jones," and is devoted to the original three movies that then existed; it's just those lame cutout-style versions of 2d stills (and is also just one three-reel release for the whole "trilogy," meaning a measly single reel per movie*). The other, though, from The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, was specially photographed by a Viewmaster photographer at the shooting locations during the production of a single episode ("British East Africa, September 1909"), and so it has a whole three-reel set devoted to just that one episode, all in glorious true 3d images, just like that Star Trek "The Omega Glory" set.
As I mentioned earlier, I just found my interest in Viewmaster rekindled a couple days ago, just a day or two before Zap resurrected the thread, and I've been Googling VM-related things, and just learned there were a couple sets based on Doctor Who (!), one from one of the Fourth Doctor's stories and one from one of the Fifth Doctor's. Does anyone here know whether these use real 3d photographs or just those cutout-like versions made from 2d ones? If it's the former, I think I'll have to seek them out...
*Yeah, I know complaining about the quantity of something I just complained about the quantity of is a bit like the old joke about two patrons at a restaurant: "The food here is terrible!" / "Yes, and such small portions!"
