Thor, the 3D images were quite spectacular for a kid - the different "layers" of images really "stood out" (ha!). The first Viewmasters used batteries to illuminate the images from inside, the later ones (the one you remember?) had a kind of window at the back which let the light in (if there was any light around you could point it at).

About the disks to popular live-action movies: Were these stereo photos taken with binocular cameras like stills on the film sets, or was the 3D effect added later on (and if so, what was the process)? I've searched the Internet, but was unable to find that answer.

I've been told that Viewmaster actually had guys present with the 3D cameras at tv and movie shoots.

Man, did I love Viewmasters when I was a kid. Had tons! Really loved POSEIDON ADVENTURE and KING KONG ones. Almost as good as the Anobile movie photonovels!

DS

I still have King Kong and Star Trek: The Motion Picture (with Robert Abel FX shots, i think).

I've got some of the Marvel Comics sets, Spider-Man, Captain America, and The Mighty Thor.

...I remember having 'The Omega Glory' from 'Star Trek' amongst others, around 1970 or so.

I have that one. The shot on the reel of the Enterprise in orbit was specially made for the set, not a still from the episode.

That was actually the 3-foot Enterprise model in the foreground, and an 18-inch AMT model kit in the background. Later in the series, the 3-foot model was seen on-air as the captured, miniaturized Enterprise on Flint's desk in "Requiem for Methuselah."

From the Viewmaster page at Wikipedia:

"As of July 2009, DreamWorks SKG was negotiating for the rights to develop View-Master into a feature film."

I'd be curious to know what they do with it. Maybe some kid will find a magic Viewmaster in his grandfather's attic, and it will be a portal to the places depicted in the reels. It will be the first film of its kind. smile

Holy cats, Zap, I've been thinking of Viewmaster stuff in general (and the Star Trek: "The Omega Glory" set in particular) for the past few days - enough that I was actually thinking of starting my own thread here on the subject, and before I do you go out and find an old thread and resurrect it for me. I don't know whether to be annoyed you've obviated any such thread I might've done, or gratified. I think I'll choose the latter.

(To be continued...)

Biggest mistake I ever made was giving away mine. I loved Viewmaster as a kid and always had a dream aout building a huge collection of slides which never came about.

May have to have a look on eBay tonight and see whats on sale.

I have a nice collection of travel reels. I've always had a soft spot for View-Master and their sister product Pana-Vue, plus I'm a stereo photography enthusiast. This gorgeous camera is on my list of cool things to own eventually:

Twitch 3D

Yes, there's a lot of parallax, but I generally find most commercial 3D has far too much parallax—probably because the publisher is trying to push the effect.

yes i think a ex girlfriend of mine had one of those things years ago she had film clips of deep throat and Johnny Wadd films she put in the viewmaster, well i guess after that i could not live up to her expectations, was not my girlfriend for very long., back in those dirty old 70's, 80's days.

Anybody remember the talking View Masters? The reels had the discs on the back.

Back when eBay first began, I got a bunch of classic Viewmaster viewers and some really wonderful reels for them. They all still work beautifully - I love them dearly.

Yes. I do indeed, filmusicnow.

I had a NASA Apollo View Master set that had the raised little clear plastic records connected behind the reels.

You needed the special longer bulkier viewer with the speaker and that bar in front that you pressed to start the record. (And it had some sort of "reset" button on the back too if I recall correctly) I believe that the "talking" VM viewer also had a small built in light inside that backlit the reels so you didn't have to hold the viewer to a light source like the older more familiar model.

Unfortunately (as I'm sure you are aware) just like regular old lp record albums they had a tendency to skip.

But those were fun days.

One of the things I've found really interesting about Viewmaster reel subjects, with regards to ones licensed from various entertainment properties, is the selections could be fairly scattershot and unpredictable in terms of what movies and shows and such got VM treatment (aside from generally being from things kids would be interested in), and to what extent. There are Viewmaster reels for things that got extremely little in the way of other merchandising - I've got the reels for The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (which the VM set refers to simply as "Buckaroo Banzai"), and I understand there's a set for the incredibly little-seen Twice Upon a Time, of all things - while big, major productions with tons of other merchandise often don't have any (have there ever been any Star Wars ones, for example?). And there are also reels for the expected, big, popular things like Star Trek and Superman and so on, but here, too, the treatment varies - for some projects, they just used "conversions" (I use that in the loosest possible sense) from 2d publicity stills and such, resulting in highly inferior "cutout"-style stereo images, but for others they would actually send their own stereo photographers to the sets and locations of movie and TV productions, and get excellent 3d photos from those productions (that aren't published elsewhere, even in 2d).

I have a couple Indiana Jones sets they did back in the day. One is called "The Legend of Indiana Jones," and is devoted to the original three movies that then existed; it's just those lame cutout-style versions of 2d stills (and is also just one three-reel release for the whole "trilogy," meaning a measly single reel per movie*). The other, though, from The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, was specially photographed by a Viewmaster photographer at the shooting locations during the production of a single episode ("British East Africa, September 1909"), and so it has a whole three-reel set devoted to just that one episode, all in glorious true 3d images, just like that Star Trek "The Omega Glory" set.

As I mentioned earlier, I just found my interest in Viewmaster rekindled a couple days ago, just a day or two before Zap resurrected the thread, and I've been Googling VM-related things, and just learned there were a couple sets based on Doctor Who (!), one from one of the Fourth Doctor's stories and one from one of the Fifth Doctor's. Does anyone here know whether these use real 3d photographs or just those cutout-like versions made from 2d ones? If it's the former, I think I'll have to seek them out...

*Yeah, I know complaining about the quantity of something I just complained about the quantity of is a bit like the old joke about two patrons at a restaurant: "The food here is terrible!" / "Yes, and such small portions!"
