He picks quality formulaic projects and talented directors, and he comes out with a well made formulaic product, Mission Impossible is very formulaic, but it is well written and well directed, so they are nonetheless good films.

There's a difference between 'genre fare' and 'formulaic'. AMERICAN MADE was just asinine on so many levels.

The only movie I saw in theaters this year was Logan, so of all the films I've seen in 2017, this year gets 100% for me.

Thor, you are not getting the point, that this was the way this man actually lived his insane life, it is not supposed to be logical or plausible, but it is in fact, true. You could say you really think that this movie about this real life story should never be made, but it is not stupid in itself, it was his life story.

And quite a few critics do not agree with you

Kenneth Turan;
"American Made" is a smart, nervy film, a very modern entertainment made with energy, style and a fine sense of humor that keeps us amused until gradually, almost imperceptibly, the laughter starts to stick in our throats."

I'm not talking about the story (or what it was based on), but the actual film itself. The self-aware comedy was stupid, and the plot/action completely predictable and uninteresting. And there was very little interesting in terms of mise-en-scene. The character was much more interesting in NARCOS (although he didn't appear that much). But I guess, as a late night movie when nothing else is one, it does its job decently. It's not offensively bad or anything.

I agree that it was not that funny, perhaps it was supposed to be moreso, not sure. But I do not think it is a worst of the year by any measure, nor do I think it is even a bad movie. It's probably not something I would rewatch or buy, but when people start tossing the label "Worst" we need to keep in mind how bad movies can really be. And Doug Liman is not a slouch, he is a talented director.

Yeah, I like Doug Liman. He singlehandedly redefined the action movie as a genre with the first BOURNE. But I think he was 'off' here. The worst movies of 2017 (those which only got one out of five stars from me), I mentioned earlier on. AMERICAN MADE belongs in the two-star category, among quite a few other titles, so slightly above.

I saw life yesterday on sky. Thought was disappointing. It was Alien again but a smaller crew and a starfish instead of a alien. It was like a cross between the snakes in prometheus and The Blob. The ending was very guessable.
If id seen many other movies from 2017 it would still be on my nothing special list.
And they did the big star goes early shock in deep blue sea and executive decision and many others so that gimmick is hardly original. maybe not worst but very Average

You nailed it, Bill Carson. No one in this film was smarter than a starfish! If you view this on Blu-ray sometime, you play the 'extras'. Every member of the cast goes overboard on being personally 'blown-away' at how original and intelligent the filmmaker and the script is. I foresaw the ending way, way before it ended.

The one that really sticks out as terrible for me would be King Arthur, that and Colossal. Most of the poorly reviewed stuff I end up skipping or not making it to the end.

Again, a film like LIFE you have to watch on its own terms. Unlike someone like Ridley Scott, Daniel Espinosa is not able to apply the same kind of visionary qualities to familiar tropes. So you have to leave that kind of narrative criticism at the door, IMO. Where I think it succeeds somewhat is in the mise-en-scene; the mood, setpieces and an engrossing universe. But yes -- it has several weaknesses, and now that I revisited my list, I see that I only gave it two out of five stars (I initially thought I had given it three).

ALIEN: Covenant. How can anyone tolerate this kind of direction?

Prometheus: It may be a part of the ALIEN franchise, it may not. Who knows?
Covenant: I'm putting the alien back in it because that's what everyone wants to see.
Next Movie: There won't be an alien in the next one because AI is cooler.

ALIEN is now just a film about a random crew encountering one of David's home-brewed xenos. That's it. If you're going into this franchise starting with Prometheus, ALIEN is such a pointless installment since it doesn't cover any of the major storylines dealing with the origin of humanity and whatever the heck those engineers are. I freaking hated turning the Space Jockeys into humans.

Correction: A L I E N is (and always will be) a masterpiece.

Prometheus and Alien Covenant were mistakes.

That's really all anyone needs to know.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!
Winner Of The Internet Today Award!!!

THIS is where old Ridder's screwed the whole ALIEN franchise up FOREVER!
For me, now, there will ONLY ever be the first 2 films worth a watch.

Meh....I don't care what anyone says. PROMETHEUS and ALIEN: COVENANT are both Top 10 movies for me (PROMETHEUS was my no. 1, A:C will probably feature in the Top 5). But it's crucial to look beyond surface storylines. The value of these films lies in intertextual references, mythology, philosophy. Often communicated through visuals, sometimes through dialogue or other means.

I wish you all could read Norwegian, because I went into some detail about this in my Norwegian review. Perhaps it translates decently in Google Translate, I don't know:

All I want for Christmas is an English translation of Thor's PROMETHEUS/ALIEN
interpretation!
