Peter O'Toole played an eccentric university scientist trying to clone his deceased wife in the 1985 romantic comedy CREATOR. Ivan Passer directed the film, in which Rance Howard and Ellen Geer play the parents of "Barbara Spencer" (Virginia Madsen), with whom graduate student "Boris Lafkin" (Vincent Spano) is smitten. Sylvester Levay's score for the film has not had a release.

The 1985 television adaptation of THE LONG HOT SUMMER starred Don Johnson and Cybill Shepherd in the parts that were played by Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward in the 1958 theatrical feature. Rance Howard played the character of "Wilk," a part played by Val Avery in the original. Stuart Cooper directed the television film, which had an unreleased score by Charles Bernstein.

In the 1986 social comedy GUNG HO, when a Japanese car company buys an American plant, the American liaison (Michael Keaton) must mediate the clash of work attitudes between the foreign management and native labor. Rance Howard played the Mayor of Hadleyville, Pennsylvania, "Conrad Zwart." Ron Howard directed the film. Thomas Newman's score has not had a legitimate release.

Rance Howard played a preacher in the 1986 television reunion film RETURN TO MAYBERRY, in which his son Ron reprised his role of "Opie Taylor" from "The Andy Griffith Show." Bob Sweeney directed the film, which was scored by Earle Hagen.

Rance Howard appeared in a bit part as a supermarket customer in Joe Dante's 1987 sci-fi comedy INNERSPACE. Jerry Goldsmith's score was most recently released by La-La Land in 2009.

In 1992's UNIVERSAL SOLDIER, after Private "Luc Deveraux" (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and his sadistic sergeant, "Andrew Scott" (Dolph Lundgren) are killed in Vietnam, the army uses their bodies for a secret project - reanimating dead soldiers as deadly obedient cyborgs. Rance Howard played "John Deveraux," Luc's father. Roland Emmerich directed this sci-fi action film. Christopher Franke's score was released by Varese Sarabande.

In 1993's FEARLESS, Rance Howard played a bald cab driver. Peter Weir directed this psychological drama. Maurice Jarre's score had two tracks on the music CD released by Elektra.

THE COWBOY WAY follows a pair of cowboys in New York (Woody Harrelson and Kiefer Sutherland) who have to become unlikely heroes when their friend is kidnapped. Rance Howard played a bit part as an "old gentleman" in the 1994 comedy-drama. Gregg Champion directed. None of David Newman's score appeared on the song-track CD released by Epic.

Shot in black and white, ED WOOD starred Johnny Depp, who turned in an oddly stylized performance as the goofy grade-Z movie director. Rance Howard played "Old Man McCoy" in the picture. Tim Burton directed the 1994 film. Howard Shore's score was released by Hollywood Records, and was re-released in an expanded version on Shore's own label in 2013.

Glenne Headly co-starred with Steve Martin in the 1996 comedy SGT. BILKO. Martin played the character made famous by Phil Silvers in his 1955-59 self-titled television show (aka "You'll Never Get Rich"). Rance Howard played "Mr. Robbins" in the picture. Jonathan Lynn directed the film, which had an unreleased score by Alan Silvestri.

Working again with director Roland Emmerich, Rance Howard played a chaplin in the 1996 sci-fi blockbuster INDEPENDENCE DAY. David Arnold's score was most recently released in 2010 by La-La Land.

In 1999's HAPPY, TEXAS, Rance Howard played a character named "Ely." Mark Illsley directed the crime comedy. None of Peter Harris' score appeared on the song-track CD released by Arista.
