I read that the near-ever present Terry was booked only twice in the Premier League this season.

The England team will be a disgrace to the country in the upcoming World Cup. The only reason Hodgson has included Shaw and some other kids is concern over his own legacy. He'll go down as a failure if they lose with only established players, but with people like Shaw around, he can say he at least put some emphasis on youth for the future and "built" something. Wait and see – all we'll hear about from him after the debacle is concluded will be the "foundations" he supposedly put in place.

The England team has not one player who will be of even remote interest to the worldwide viewing audience. They're bored with regular World Cup hype about Rooney and see him as an unattractive, overweight labourer. And of the rest, how many would be picked for any of the top contender nations? Name just two players in the England squad who are world class. Oxlade-Chamberlain? Johnson? Welbeck? Lambert? The oaf Phil Jones? Toiler Milner? Smalling? Laughable. Even Gerrard is half what he was. Lampard is one-third. And Sturridge can be a pouting wastrel. There's no-one else who is anything more than decent (Hart, Baines, Jagielka, Cahill, Wilshire) vaguely promising (Lallana, Sterling, Barkley), or average (Henderson, Foster).

The only ones who would have still been considered world class by opposing players and international fans alike would have been the much-maligned Terry and Cole. Ask opponents like Ronaldo or Robben if they'd rather be marked by Cole or Baines. Ask the world's best strikers if they'd prefer to have one of Jones, Jagielka or Smalling opposing them, or John Terry.

Actually, there should be no reason to ask them. It's obvious.

2006 World Cup in Germany? They got beat in the Quarter-Final by Portugal. I remember it wellwink So does Ronaldowink

The last World Cup England didn't qualify for was USA 1994.

Yup, you're quite right. I was thinking when we didn't qualify for the Euro 2008, but that still makes my point, with players in the team like: Ashley Cole, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard & Wayne Rooney. At least people aren't expecting England to win (like last time), if we get through the first round it'll be street party timesmile

I was at Wembley in '74 when Poland knocked us out of the qualifiers, ha, that was a bit of a downer.

Ah yes, the 'Wally with the Brolly'. He's done pretty well since, in fairness to him...

I more or less agree with Hodgson's picks, I'm sure he'll be delighted to hear. About time an England manager made some changes and freshened the whole thing up. I think they may do better than some people think. But not being English myself, I'm not botheredbig grin

RE: Samir Nasri's omission from Les Bleus

I had the impression that Nasri was a major part of the 2012 meltdown that lead to Laurent Blanc's resignation as manager. Deschamps wouldn't tolerate the likes of that though the fact that Patrice Evra remains on the team after his 2010 bs boggles the mind.

RE: England's 2010 World Cup campaign

I'm watching the BBC coverage of the matches and the expert analysis by Alan Shearer and the like. I don't know what was worse, the way the team performed or the TV analysts having to talk about those pathetic performances. The most amusing thing is how baffled the analysts are.

Im english and im not bothered.

You wait till it gets nearer, the hype will grow. And if we have a win in the group - unlikely - it will go thru the roof.

I would have called up Nasri to the squad. Not only would it have been more humiliating to actually be in the squad but never be named even as a substitute, it would also have made him miss his summer holidays. As it is, foolish Deschamps has now allowed the smirk-faced Nasri to relax and enjoy a lovely beach vacation.

Typical English defeatism and fatalism. Drives me bonkers.

This is an honest, sincere question: what would be your starting XI for the World Cup, based on the players available for selection? Seriously, I'd like to know who would make your cut.

Here's my choice. Although I'm not Englishwink

Hart; Johnson, Cahill, Jagielka, Baines; Gerrard, Henderson; Sterling, Rooney, Barkley; Sturridge.

I'm going to go out on my usual limb and say that England gets through their group, along with Uruguay. I think Italy will be one of the big busts this World Cup.

In other news, Italy wins its fifth World Cup.

Terry would have to play. Apart from that, it makes little difference which players England picks because they have none of any consequence. It's impossible to pick a worthwhile England team. Do you see Bayern and Barcelona or Real Madrid or PSG, with all their money , rushing to buy English players? Hardly. It's a very rare event. Welshmen maybe, but English? Why on earth would they buy current English players? The only player I see that has the potential to one day be a world class talent is Stones of Everton.

Terry has 'retired' from international football though.

It's a fair point raised by Basil. I also like the look of Stones, the only other one I would mention with world class potential is Barkley.

Terry would have to play.

Why? He's been to two World Cups and two Euros and we've never been beyond the quarter finals. I always found his England form more suspect than his club form, where he reigns supreme, frequently getting Chelsea to the latter stages of the Champions League. Time for someone else to have a go, although I'm slightly concerned that half our defence plays for Everton. Not good enough against the big guns.

I was at yesterday's England-Ecuador World Cup "warm up" match, which ended 2-2 but not before a fisticuffs in the stands which saw an Ecuador supporter being sent off and then Raheem Sterling and Antonio Valencia got the same treatment. big grin

England looked okay when Rooney was on the pitch (he scored a goal(!)) but they were slow and tentative when they should have burst down the field. Ecuador had less possession but had more snap in their step.

One of the great things about attending a football match is the England supporters; they're so brutally honest but loving in the toughest of ways. The beer helps them, that's for sure. The guys next to me were marveling over the size of the Corona-in-large-cans they drank five or six in a row of and only had that many because they hadn't seen that said cans existed earlier, so out went the regular-size Budweiser (yech) and in went the Corona.

Corona. Proud sponsor of The World Cup 2014 (Brazil) thread. wink

If Liverpool had had Everton's defence last season, we would have beaten Billion Dollar City to the League Title!
It's Glen Johnson who is the weak link.

I'm coming on for my debut in this thread...

I was pleased to see not one but several Leeds United flags on display - and a little bird tells me that you were near one of them. There was no mention of any fighting in the crowd that I recall - just a bit of north-west rivalry between the 'pool and the other team who shall not be named players. Valencia deserved to go, Sterling much less so. A timely reminder that international referees can see things differently from UK or even European ones.

RE: Samir Nasri's omission from Les Bleus

Ribery has now been ruled out for 'Les Bleus' through injury. Merde!!
