The Counselor : I seem to be one of the few people on the planet who liked it, judging by the myriad "worst movie ever" reviews on Amazon & Redbox. smile

You and me both. I've gotten into a lot of arguments with other movie reviewers on Wordpress about the movie. It was one of my favorites from last year. I'm glad I watched it in theaters despite some negative reviews.

OLD yeah, back in 1931 at the majestic theatre me and my gal went to see THE BAG LADY a couple of hours of pleasant diversion. but I tell you folks I did enjoy the shorts more and my gal enjoy the newsreels more then the feature. I ll be darn I don't think I can remember the second feature some title like "Women in trouble" "or Me and my Lady. We went in at 1 pm and didn't get out till the sun went down at 6.pm. The whole thing did costs me a lot, 50 cents. But it was enjoyable. Next time we might go see a RONALD COLEMAN film or a PAUL MUNI one. I hear they are thinking about color in films that would be nice. Lifelike, you know what I mean?. My sister's little kid said to her when they went to the picture show last week' mommy why do those people on film look so funny, so pale. yeah the things you have to explain to the young ones in life.

Count me in as a fan and I loved the EXTENDED cut. FANTASTIC film. Big talk, wonderful scope, and just crushing brutality and beauty.

I really liked The Counselor, too, which surprised given how little I've liked so much of Scott's stuff.

So if you and your gal were going to movies in 1931, then you must now be in your late 90s -- right? My parents were too young to go to movies unaccompanied in 1931, and one is now 93 and the other 92. Well, that seems to answer at least one question: Why is FSM such an enormous part of dan the man's life? When you are looking back at movies you went out to see 83 years ago, you probably don't get out much anymore.

Hmm I was hesitant to watch it during its theatrical run, might rent it on-demand given the sudden praise in this thread.

I will say it is not without problems. At least one of the characters is badly miscast. There are times when the monologues cease to feel real. I don't think it's a great movie. But I do think it comes pretty close.

TO RON HARDCASTLE-CUTE, RON CUTE.NO actually the last film I went to see was that magnificent musical THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL, THE ONE WITH THOSE GREAT SONGS by what's his name BRUCE - SOMETHING. anyway me and girlfriend found the film thoroughly enjoyable but she and I was a bit disappointed. I wish Cindy Williams took it all off and she wish the lead actor Bruce Kimmel took it all off.[ha ha ha]

Sabotage (2014) - 1/5

Terrible movie. Schwarzenegger was good (as usual), but the movie itself easily ranks among his worst.

NOAH

I've enjoyed all of Aranofsky's film but this one missed the mark for me. There are several really good moments and scenes but I cannot quite place what was missing overall. It is overlong and they took a lot of artistic liscense with the story. The latter I do not mind but it does come across more as a Tolkienesque kind of story. There are even rock monsters known as Watchers, basically Angels who defied God to come and help man but were banished by God . They fell to Earth like molten lava balls and were covered in stone. It's a bit of a mish mash of the Old Testament and other Apocryphal literature.

The effects are quite good but not state of the art. The ark itself is impressive and Crowe handles himself well as Noah. What I find interesting is that none of the characters call God, "God" but simply, "The Creator".

Anyway, the movie certainly is allegorical and Im fine with that. It just did not have any sort of impact on me other than a large amount of boredom interrupted by flashes of intense violence and some emotional scenes.

5 out 10 for me. A disappointment.

Mostly agree with you Tomin. I also found that the music didn't really help things. Though there was a decent theme at times most of it was a boring 2 note motif. Like you said, the movie just moved way too slow for what it could have been. The first half was horribly slow for me, especially because the trailers left me expecting they would get to the point a lot faster. I give it a 5/10 myself.

Assault on Wall street-2013-Gosh this film almost makes Taxi driver-76 look like a happy romp. Man loses everything due to the modern economic situation in America, decides to take out the guys he thinks are responsible for his downfall. The tragic events for him includes, losing his house , his life savings, his job and his wife thru suicide. While film is nicely made on a obvious limited budget by today's standards, the word nice is a hard word to used concerning anything with this effort. It is one of the most depressing films I have seen in a long time by it's very effective direction, which from scene one never let's up hitting us with vibes of morbid tragic events of what seems like a average man living a nightmare 24/ 7. With everything around him crushing down on him in behemoth fashion the director milks as many solitary scenes of inner anger he can deliver..My emotions on this film varies at times. On one hand I see this just a bit over exaggerated to the point of visual masochism. But on the other hand when one sees the reality of life, in a scenario where terrible occurrence's can constantly happened to normal average people in a span of a short time, sadly this film could indeed be realistic. He sets up a revenge scenario on those who he feels are dubious people which is a bit refreshing in a film that is far from refreshing. Knowing the film industry too well perhaps this film should be seen with caution. I hate to say it but I will say , caution. Because for some viewers on the cuss of life this film could be the fuse that sets them off. An elite downer with a capital D.After watching this film by accident recently late at night on cable, my reaction when it was over as i went to bed was the director was telling me BAD NIGHT not good night.

Grudge Match 2013 4/10

Just couldn't get into this movie at all, a lot of it felt like bad rehashed Rocky Balboa meets The Wrestler material; add a black guy doing a Chris Tucker impression; I wasn't expecting much of this movie, and that's what I got. Wished both De Niro as well as Stallone had the decency of turning this project down and had teamed up on something worthwhile like their previous collabo on Copland.

The Matrix 1999 8/10

Still holds up well since I saw it last in the theater. Revisiting the trilogy due to getting Don Davis' expanded scores and though I dread reliving the decline of the sequels, the first movie remains a great film experience.

Tad: The Lost Explorer 3.5-5

A Spanish CGI production. This children's animated film was clearly done as a homage too the Indiana Jones franchise. In fact the main character actually inherits Indiana Jones's fedora! (That's the explanation in the English language version) Being a non American production the heroine is shall we say, quite curvy and a bit sexier than your average female counterpart.

This is no Pixar or Disney production. The animation of the characters are a bit stiff and less expressive. Especially the hair. In fact I thought at first this was a stop motion film. Though backgrounds, effects animation, and mechanical devices are all very well rendered.

The film by no means a great piece of work was fun. Some of the Looney Tunes type of humor struck a positive cord with me. It's a breezy, light hearted adventure comedy.

Cosmos (2014) Episode two: 5-5/Episode three: 4-5

Updated review. Episode two and three were a great improvement over episode one which I thought was nothing short of terrible. I felt episode three was more of a history lesson opposed to a science lesson. I still feel the series is just repackaging old content. The reason for the new series according to the creators was because there was so much new science to tell. So far the series feels more like a refresher course.

MIGHTY JOE YOUNG- 49- Caught up with this heartwarming film after not seeing it for a few decades. In some ways I appreciate it more, not just because of the fine effects from MR HARRYHAUSEN, but also because there is a lot of warmth and humanity in it. The fire sequence at the conclusion always was a chilling haunting sequence, the ending was touching and the beautiful classic song BEAUTIFUL DREAMER, in it moves things along nicely. The remake was also an enjoyable experience, but there was always something so natural about this one that always made this a winner in timeless style.

I couldn't stand it even in the trailers. The movie was far too over-advertised such that they showed the trailer every time I went to the movies in the last third of 2013. Glad to hear I'm not alone.

CRESCENDO-69-STEFANIE POWERS, JAMES OLSON- Not bad Hammer film I finally caught up with after many years[seem then all now 55 and up] whose assets includes , good leisure pacing, tight knit direction. solid acting, good dominant score by MALCOLM WILLIAMSOM, fine tech credits and a who would have guess it surprise plot twist near the end that got me totally off guard. Not as good as Hammer's best [TASTE OF FEAR] but better then some of their other psychological thrillers. It has class from a studio that nearly always had class.

  • The Shadow (1994)

Alec Baldwin and his hairy chest (Alec, take a weed-whacker to that thing, would ya) star in this silly screen adaptation. I don't know why screenwriter David Koepp keeps getting hired because the man can't write a decent line of dialogue to save his life. The film comes off as a failed attempt to cross Batman with Darkman. Familiar actors such as Tim Curry and Jonathan Winters are given small useless roles. I bought this cheap DVD just to hear Jerry Goldsmith's score and I liked what I heard. That's about the best thing I can say about the film. I liked the scene early in the film where Shadow saves a man from being dumped in the river but that approach is quickly abandoned and dull characters played by John Lone and Penelope Ann Miller bring the film to a standstill. I can see why there was no sequel. I don't want one. 4/10

    The Eiger Sanction (1975) - 3/5

Not quite what I was expecting, with all the climbing not until about the last 30 minutes. A little on the slow side, but my interest was held throughout. However, the surprise reveal at the very end seem to basically render the whole movie a little pointless. It was still entertaining, though. The climbing sequences were very well done and suspenseful, and Eastwood (of course) was his usual excellent self. His introduction reminded me of Indiana Jones and made we wonder if that served as inspiration for Lucas and Spielberg.

Agreed great score/painful film. The dialog was just dreadful.
