Parmount has been justly earning the award for best studio doing vintage TV on DVD this year, BUT it's now becoming clear there's one major drawback to their releases, and that's the fact that Paramount has become a total cheapskate on the issue of music clearance. Season 2 of "Happy Days" basically got the WKRP treatment in terms of wholesale music replacement, and now comes word that the upcoming Season 2 of "The Odd Couple" has music replacement issues as well.

Having seen "Odd Couple" many times in reruns I know what this means. Many times when a guest star from the music realm was on, there would usually be one solo number of sorts and I suspect that means we're not going to see the long list of opera singers doing numbers in the tag scenes, but I'm a tad more concerned about those wonderfully comedic moments when Felix would burst into song. If *those* are cut out, then we're looking at something very bad from my standpoint.

Thank goodness music clearance isn't a big issue with "Hawaii Five-O" or "Streets Of San Francisco".

I picked up the "Banacek" Season 1 set today, knowing it lacked the pilot movie. Watching the first regular episode, I am beginning to get the uneasy feeling that Universal loaned out syndicated cut versions of these episodes, because there are two instances where music cues alter noticably suggest some kind of transitioning has been lost. The 72 minute running time for a 90 minute movie seems a few minutes short by mid-1970s standards for me.

I e-mailed the company about the pilot. They opened their contact page.

Hope you get a reply! If they do a Season 2, they could always put the pilot movie on that. Universal's release of "Rockford Files" failed to include the pilot on Season 1, but did include it on Season 2 as a "bonus", and the failed to include the "Marcus-Nelson Murders" pilot film for "Kojak" on the S1 release of that (and unfortunately there never was a S2 there, and if there was, they'd be more inclined to include the S3 episode with Sylvester Stallone as a "bonus" I think).

I hope they will reply.
I am now watching my set of "Ironside"--I already watched the original pilot plus the first two regular episodes. We're lucky they've added the pilot which is a good 90 minutes television movie: see the creative editing process and its subliminal quick cuts. I really like "Message from Beyond". No subtitles on the set which is dry for me.
I guess the "Banacek" DVD has no subtitles or CC?

According to the specs, no. This is really a cheap set when you get down to it, in which Universal basically licensed it out to a bargain basement label. And what's *really* annoying is how they put in a 40 second anti-copy commercial when you load the disc that you can't zap through everytime you play it.

Eric, Eric,

I just received my reply and a positive one.
Read this feedback:

"YES we are definitely releasing the Pilot of this show in our Season Two release later this year. It took a while for us to clear the rights to release it but we have finally done so.

Eric,

Do these prints look clean (picture and sound)?

Glad to hear they remembered the pilot movie and will include it next time out (and finish the series in the process, which none of the more familiar NBC Mystery Movies of that era other than Columbo can claim).

On further viewing I think the prints are uncut but these fadeouts that happen in the wrong spots suggest that they were done for the benefit of later cable airings on A+E and elsewhere were the commercial breaks aren't put in the original spot.

The prints certainly don't like like Five-O does, but they are good all things considering. Well worth getting.

I eagerly await the release of THE INVADERS this summer to hear how the prints look...the broadcasts in the UK were said to be pristine so maybe Paramount has done some amount of remastering. Let's hope they're all complete and unedited...and they can find the 75 minute BEACH HEAD and perhaps some interviews with Thinnes and Larry Cohen etc. but given Paramount's lack of bonuses so far I hold small hopes. Should they include the miniseries as a bonus?

As long as they release the entire 1.5 season run, I don't care if they include episodes of THE DONNA REED SHOW with it. Bring it on- and do it NOW!

I wouldn't mind seeing the Donna Reed Show on DVD, myself! That alas is under Sony's control and Sony has become the worst studio as far as contempt for classic B/W shows in its catalog goes. If they hadn't licensed 60 episodes of "Naked City" to Image, then the only B/W shows on DVD from the Columbia/Screen Gems catalog would be the initial seasons of shows that later went to color.

Ah, you're good, man! I can't believe that someone who wasn't even THERE when those were aired has such keen knowledge about them- seriously! I know that Columbia television produced it, it always ended with the Columbia Lady and a voice over, with "This has been a SCREENGEMS PRESENTATION".

I grew up in the early to mid sixties watching it Thursday nights on ABC.

You never forget those logos. smile I always liked the "Dancing Sticks" Screen Gems logo with the music fanfare.

If Paramount release "The Invaders", the copies can be cleaned and it will include CC and subtitles like "The Streets of San Francisco".
I hope they will start with the complete season 1 on DVD containing 17 episodes and not two volumes.
As for the 75 minutes pilot, since it was never aired, and actually, it is a long version of the first regular episode, I have some doubts. But who knows?
The next stop is the release of "The Fugitive" in August just to witness the quality of the DVD set: it will give you a sign...

That we will soon see this released is really fine news.

Rat Patrol (Season 2-Final)
Welcome Back Kotter (Season 1)
Mission: Impossible (Season 2)
