Johnny Hartman- "I Just Dropped By To Say Hello"

Nice pick, Zelig!

John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman (1963) is my favorite Hartman recording, and it features what to me is the most beautiful and romantic love ballad of all time, "My One And Only Love," which my wife and I danced to at our wedding reception. The intoxicating combination of Johnny's voice and Coltrane's sax is a powerful elixir and a veritable musical love potion. wink

Sample, "My One and Only Love": http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/mediaplayer.asp?ean=602517648975&track=3&disc=1

Speaking of great prog albums, are you familiar with the band CAMEL? Their album Moonmadness is another one of my faves from the genre (and also very "Floydian" at times). Check out the samples at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Moonmadness-Camel/dp/B000005S08

Yeah, I'm familiar with the band, but I haven't heard a lot of them. It's been on my "check out" list for, what, 16-17 years now? embarrassment

The Snow Goose is very good, also includes arrangements by one time Mike Oldfield collaborater David Bedford.

Thanks! I remember that you liked Miles, too. Superior taste!

That Trane/Hartman album is a constant unfolding wonder! Whenever I hear it, I can't help but think of Fall and Christmastime. "You Are Too Beuatiful" is my favorite from that one. I'm already sick of Summer!

GLENN PHILLIPS ~ Scratched By the Rabbit (1990)

I just stumbled across this CD and am listening to it for the first time right now. Pretty interesting stuff by this three-piece band, all instrumental (no vocals), fronted by guitarist Glenn Phillips (whom I'd never heard of before today). Some of it has a folky-prog feel, at other times it's more roots rock-ish. The guitar licks are often trippy and unpredictable, played with a style unlike any other guitarist that I can think of. Check out the samples at amazon and lemme know whatcha think (keep in mind, though, each track is pretty long so the 30-second samples don't really do them justice):

http://www.amazon.com/Scratched-Rabbit-Glenn-Phillips/dp/B00000117L/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1213330714&sr=1-5

EDIT: On my second listen now, and Holly said some parts remind her of THE SMITHS. It definitely has an 80's alternative vibe running through a couple of the tracks. I can tell that the bassist has listened to Jaco Pastorius' fretless bass playing, as his style is evident in many of the pieces. The early works of Pat Metheny also come to mind in the spacey, jazz-fusion style that is mirrored in some of Glenn's guitar playing. The music is very emotional and provocative; each track seems to tell a story. It almost sounds like a soundtrack in that sense. I'm impressed.

EDIT #2: After my last edit I read through the reviews of this CD at Amazon and caught the following quote, which echoes my sentiments above:

"This is one of Glenn's strongest albums. Each instrumental projects a different mood...from melancholy to happy to tranquil to exciting to romantic and so on. Glenn should really consider movie scores..." ~ Stephen Cabral

PRIMUS ~ Pork Soda (1993)

PRIMUS consists of just three members (Les Claypool: bass/vocals, Larry LaLonde: guitar, and Tim "Herb" Alexander: drums), each of which are virtuosos on their respective instruments. PRIMUS is one of the most original bands ever to exist, period. Their style is inimitable. They also happen to be one of my favorite bands of all time (as if you couldn't tell). I cannot say enough good things about them; they truly defy description. You absolutely HAVE to listen to the samples...or else! smile

KANYE WEST ~ Late Registration (2005)

A modern classic, destined to go down in the hipstory books as one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever. I dare you to listen to these samples and sit still. The second track below shouts out to LUPIN THE 3RD and the THUNDERCATS. Yeah.

it's only so-so.

I always heard great things about Steve Reich, so I took a chance.

I like it, and it's interesting...for awhile.
but it's just more minimalism, just with percussion.. then it just gets tedious. how can anyone go to a concert for this?

Bing Crosby: His Greatest Hits of the 40s.

I love 30s and 40s Bing.

(Don't know how to upload the images.)
