I agree with almost everything JJH says.
However, you can pull your own damn finger.

Rude.

Wow, the haters of this film seem far more cult like to me. Constantly returning to say how much they dislike the film over and over and over. Rather psychotic actually.

This is top of the list of idiotic remarks on this board for this year - at least. I mean, do you even slightly engage your brain before you write?

I never once said that I hated this movie, and I also never said I even disliked it, I said it was passable, and given the choice I would see it over Transformers 4. Solium, also never said anything like this either, because he never saw it.

Also, you rarely find cults made up of one person or even two, but you do find them made of lots who reject others that do not agree.

I do not agree that GOTG is a great movie or an excellent movie, either this year, or compared against movies of all time. Clearly, the hatred, if any, is directed at me or Solium for diverging from the lockstep thought on this movie.

Also, the financials on any movie are entirely irrelevant. There are lots of awful movies that have made tons of money, and there are brilliant movies that have been catastrophic financial failures. Box office means absolutely nothing, unless you are the studio. It does measure popular opinion, but I think popular opinion often dwells somewhere around the lowest common denominator.

If there is a psychosis it is obviously your own.

I believe I said the following: "I imagine it's a decent escapist film for the masses." Ive grown tired of mediocre films, and it hasn't made a killing domestically. Simple as that.

As JJH said, "Repeating a lie over and over again doesn't turn that lie into truth....especially when you're just trying to be a pig-headed contrarian for no reason whatsoever."

And accusing someone of lying over and over again doesn't make it true. roll eyes

Well, I'm not sure if anyone is accusing you of lying per se - but you are actually wrong.

No matter what, as this points out, all subjective judgements aside, this is a very, very low 'highest grossing movie of the summer". As stated here;

http://www.buzzfeed.com/adambvary/summer-2014-movie-wrap-up#3pcjz2j

Breaking things down even further, it wasn’t until August that a summer movie became the top-grossing film of the year so far — that would be Guardians of the Galaxy, which supplanted Marvel Studios’ other movie this year, Captain America: The Winter Soldier (which was released in April), for the No. 1 spot atop the U.S. box office. As far as I can tell, before this year, an August movie hadn’t won the summer domestic box office since at least 1980, and possibly ever. And Guardians did it with just $251.5 million (and counting) in domestic receipts. If current projections for the movie to top out around $290 million are correct, it will be the lowest-grossing summer movie champion since Shrek in 2001 (and adjusting for inflation, since Ghost in 1990 — there are BuzzFeed staffers who weren’t even born in 1990).

Budget 170 million + 100 advertising= 270. Domestic taken in 274. It has not made a profit in the US.

@ Ado- When facts, well reasoned opinions, and visual demonstrations are received with personal attacks I'd say it's time to let the mob have the last word. See you in other FSM threads. wink

Agreed Solium.
I guess it comes down to, the message here is that it is really NOT OKAY, that we might think this is NOT an amazing movie that is an enormous cultural event and huge success. Yeah, really it needs around 500 million to break a profit, $170 million *2.5 for paying distributors and exhibition cuts, then add even a conservative $75 million for marketing. So no, it is not anywhere near a profit, but in a paltry weak movie summer, it is a huge hit, still in the red.

It's out of the red (280 mill) and still making money. Talk about deaf dumb and blind.

@Storyteller,

You are aggressively ignorant, i mean you practice not getting the basic math here.

As I already explained, and which you are really doing a great job not understanding whatsoever, Disney has not made one red penny off this picture, and they won't till it reaches about $500 million. It is and remains unprofitable through another $200 million of earnings to go, which may or may not happen.

For someone tired of the box office conversation, you are pretty good at making aggressively ignorant comments about a movie that's grossed $554 million to date.

This is the dumbest thing you've written in this thread.

You can hate the movie all you want. And believe me, we get that you hate it. The lengths you're going to in order to demonstrate your hatred of this movie is nothing short of awesome.

but this does NOT in any way mean that the movie hasn't been a resounding success. You're being obtuse and annoying on purpose at this point.

And the worldwide gross does count. Stating the domestic gross is the only yardstick for the film's success is simply sticking your head in the sand. You can't ignore it.

Additionally, it was stated in a previous post this film would be forgotten by November. If Disney/Marvel is on top of things, they'll have GotG on Blu-ray/DVD out for Christmas. If so, they'll make a ton on that little stocking stuffer.

Someone must have hacked my FSM account and written hateful things about GOTG, because I never said anything hateful about it at all. But I have to say that the moron to GOTG fan ratio is rabidly, preposterously, bizarrely high and apparently all of you are seeing and hearing things that never happened.

My goodness my blocklist has grown by a few this past 24 hours.

You started trashing the movie before it even came out, as I've already demonstrated in this thread.

Get over yourself.
