I thought this was a very good film, not as great as some of the reviews suggested, and nowhere near as bad as some reviews of a particular bent might suggest.

What did you think?

There's a press screening tomorrow morning that I'll try to catch. It hasn't had its official Norwegian premiere yet.

My colleagues in montages.no -- who saw it in Cannes -- were VERY taken by it.

Liked so so. The sex scenes a little too long and graphic.
But to watch Lea Seydoux acting is a joy always. A promising future I hope.

I did not feel that way. I liked better than so-so, but also don't think it is as great a lots of folks suggest.

Then you should probably stay away from the unedited version of Lars von Trier's upcoming NYMPHOMANIAC (and probably the edited version too). Personally, this is one of the films I look forward to the most right now.

I missed the press screening of BLUE today, unfortunately (it was too early!), but I'll get to see it once it's had its official premiere.

Apparently the actresses are not happy with the sex scene. Though they obviously agreed to do the film. They didn't expect the scene to go on for so long or be as graphic as it was. They appear to be embarrassed over the whole thing. Now vilifying the director. What a sad state of affairs for all involved.

All this controversy is reminding me of the hoopla that surrounded "The Brown Bunny" 10 years ago.

I have only just seen Shame. In terms of a supposedly complex narrative driven film, peppered with quite explicit sex scenes and nudity, how does this one compare? Because, you know, I thought Fazz really went above and beyond the call of duty in that there - flick?

For me this could well be this year's best film - passionate and thought provoking with a totally captivating performance from newcomer Exarchopoulos. I admit I was worried about the length - I've heard others complaining and saying it could (and should) have been half an hour or so shorter - but after watching it I can say I wouldn't cut even one from its 179 minutes!

And as a person who has absolutely no problem with nudity and sex scenes, I'd say that those scenes in BITWC - a total of ten minutes in a 3-hour film - are certainly more graphic than what we have come to expect from mainstream cinema but they are also certainly not porn (...sometimes I wonder if all those people tagging a scene as pornographic are aliens who have never seen and have no idea about the aesthetics of pornography) and at the end not something to get so very excited about.

Rating: ****1/2

I find so many of the recent gay and lesbian themed films are extremely negative. Does this end up positive in the end? Or is it just another one of those failed relationships crash and burn types?

Please spoiler any responses so that others can avoid them.

Hey! No spoilers, please. smile

I must watch the film first!

Have any of you seen Xavier Dolan's LAURENCE ANYWAYS (about a transgender person)? One of the best films last year -- mixing the sad with the uplifting.

Yes please spoiler any answers to my post. One film that was the sort of depressing artsy gay romance that I despised was Keep the Lights on so I want to make sure this is better than that one before I watch it.

You mean in a 3 hour movie there are only 10 minutes worth watching? big grin

Seriously I know nothing about this film or the director. I am suspect however. I rather see a film where intimacy is explored and expanded upon through out the context of the entire film.

This sounds like a gratuitous display of female on female love making just for the sake of it.

He, he...if you know what the film is about, that's not even remotely on the radar.

By the way, I just saw Catherine Breillat's ROMANCE again. If BLUE upset you, that one certainly would. I have some other issues with that film, but not the explicit sex or erect penises.

Inevitably those scenes will be the most titillating aspect of the film for many people but BITWC is so much more than that. And this is a straight person talking, mind you.

Incidentally, the two leads complained bitterly about how they were being treated by the director during shooting, describing the actual filming as cruel, bordering upon (psychological) torture. But maybe, it's the only way to make as intense a film as this one is.

Seydoux:

"He warned us that we had to trust him—blind trust—and give a lot of ourselves. He was making a movie about passion, so he wanted to have sex scenes, but without choreography—more like special sex scenes. He told us he didn’t want to hide the character’s sexuality because it’s an important part of every relationship. But once we were on the shoot, I realized that he really wanted us to give him everything. Most people don’t even dare to ask the things that he did, and they’re more respectful—you get reassured during sex scenes, and they’re choreographed, which desexualizes the act."

"Any emotional scenes. [Kechiche] was always searching, because he didn’t really know what he wanted. We spent weeks shooting scenes. Even crossing the street was difficult. In the first scene where we cross paths and it’s love at first sight, it’s only about thirty seconds long, but we spent the whole day shooting it—over 100 takes. By the end of it, I remember I was dizzy and couldn’t even sit. And by the end of it, [Kechiche] burst into a rage because after 100 takes I walked by Adele and laughed a little bit, because we had been walking by each other doing this stare-down scene all day. It was so, so funny. And [Kechiche] became so crazy that he picked up the little monitor he was viewing it through and threw it into the street, screaming, 'I can’t work under these conditions!'"

"It was horrible".

Translation: What I really wanna do is direct.

Ive heard stories like this over and over again and I flat out don't understand it. How can a 30 second scene take 12 hours to shoot? What a waste of money and resources. Directors are either extremely wasteful, ill prepared, or hung up on their artistry. No wonder films cost so much to make. That's not even taking into account the toll on the cast and crew.

A nightmare for the actresses but the end result justifies all this IMHO.
