Ah, 1992. Unforgiven is the movie of the year -- nothing else even comes close, unless I'm forgetting something great. Especially surprising given that I'm indifferent to some of Eastwood's other acclaimed films. After that the ordering of my list is nearly arbitrary: a bunch of good 4-star pictures, it was difficult to rank them and the order would probably turn out quite differently on another day.

Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood)

The Crying Game (Neil Jordan)

Passion Fish (John Sayles)

The Player (Robert Altman)

Strictly Ballroom (Baz Luhrmann)

Into the West (Mike Newell)

Porco Rosso (Hayao Miyazaki)

Glengarry Glen Ross (James Foley)

The Story of Qiu Ju (Zhang Yimou)

My Cousin Vinny (Jonathan Lynn)

Other notable films: A Midnight Clear, One False Move, Howards End, The Last of the Mohicans, Malcolm X, Of Mice and Men, Reservoir Dogs, Wayne's World, Enchanted April, Sneakers, Waterland, Hard Boiled, Chaplin, Bob Roberts, A Heart in Winter, El Mariachi, A River Runs Through It, Thunderheart, Aladdin, Indochine, A Leauge of Their Own, Manufacturing Consent, White Men Can't Jump, Scent of a Woman, Lorenzo's Oil, Orlando, Batman Returns, A Few Good Men, Candyman, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Bad Lieutenant

What are your favorites of the year? What have I missed? What should I check out?

This film doesn't seem to be available in the US at all. Will look into import possibilities.

What a miss ! This should be priority number one for a Criterion treatment, though.

In alphabetical order *

(1) Basic Instinct
(2) A League of Their Own
(3) My Cousin Vinny **
(4) Porco Rosso ***
(5) Sneakers
(6) Army of Darkness

Honorable mention:
Aladdin

* I think I started to lose interest in films in the 90's.
** Didn't expect to like this. Someone kept telling me how good it was. I was pleasantly surprised.
*** Love this film. It's original, funny, romantic and a pure joy.

A so-so year for me as no '92 films are highlighted in bold on my blog list: http://markrussyoung.wordpress.com/2013/08/18/favorite-films-of-1992/

    1. Chaplin (Attenborough)

    2. A Heart in Winter (Sautet)

    3. The Player (Altman)

    4. Howards End (Ivory)

    5. Singles (Crowe)

    6. Unforgiven (Eastwood)

    7. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Coppola)

    8. Noises Off (Bogdanovich)

    9. Raising Cain (DePalma)

    10. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (Lynch)

I still need to see: Damage, The Best Intentions. A Tale of Winter, A River Runs Through It, The Long Day Closes, Mac, The Public Eye, etc.

What the heck is this "Porco Rosso" several of you have mentioned? lol. I need to investigate that one! EDIT: Ah, an animated film. No wonder I'm ignorant about it. wink Nevertheless, I'll check it out. smile

I'm not terribly generally keen on animated films myself, but Miyazaki is usually an exception.

I'm surprised to see multiple people listing Basic Instinct. Even when I was a huge Verhoeven fan I didn't find much to like in that movie.

But glad to see the love for Army of Darkness!

Freejack, didn't your namesake come out in '92? And it's not on your list? I'm appalled. big grin

Most definitely! Great movie, great cast and for me best breasts in a movie (and no, not Gary Busey in drag outfit). wink

    Of course there is also:

    Alien 3
    Dracula

Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me I saw at the time but didn't understand the movie, my older brother knew the series and rented it, I did like the David Bowie cameo at the start, always freaked me out. I recently revisited it and it's a movie that gets better the more I seem to do so.

    ---

Yes it did, but it's not a direct favourite of mine... I'm a big fan of Emilio Estevez and it has a great score by Trevor Jones but Mick Jagger is badly cast as the bad guy bounty hunter.

With another actor in the role the movie would have been much better.

Best bits of the Jones' score is the car race sequence and the chase scenes.

Army Of Darkness was released in early '93.

Army Of Darkness was released in early '93.

American release was in '93, but it hit some festivals and was, according to IMDB, released in Taiwan in late '92. I know some rate movies by the year of their domestic release, but I try to go by earliest release.
