The BBC's official Doctor Who website has announced that acclaimed British film director Ben Wheatley is to helm the opening two episodes of series eight in 2014. This means that Wheatley will be in the chair for the first episodes to star Peter Capaldi, ushering in the era of the Twelfth Doctor.
Wheatley began his career creating short films and animations and internet "virals." He then moved into television, working on comedy programmes such as BBC Three's Ideal (written by Big Finish actor and author Graham Duff). His debut feature film, Down Terrace, was made in just eight days in 2009, and he has followed this with the features Kill List (2010), Sightseers (2012), A Field in England (2013) and the forthcoming Freakshift, a $15 million American film. He is also working on a science-fiction drama series called Silk Road for the American cable network HBO.
Wheatley, who will be one of the most high-profile directors ever to have worked on Doctor Who, told the BBC:
I am very excited and honoured to be asked to direct the first two episodes of the new series of Doctor Who. I've been a fan since childhood (Tom Baker is my Doctor if you are asking). I've been watching the current run of Doctor Who with my son and have discovered it all over again. The work that has been done is amazing. I'm really looking forward to working with Peter Capaldi and finding out where Steven Moffat is planning to take the new Doctor.
News of the hiring of Wheatley has generated some excitement online, with the website Den of Geek describing him as "...one of British cinema's best working directors. Throw in the Peter Capaldi factor, and this is, in our humble view, quite brilliant news."
Meanwhile, it has also emerged that the novelist and screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce is working on a script for a potential future episode of Doctor Who, having been put in touch with the production team by former showrunner Russell T Davies. Boyce, who worked with Davies on the Granada Television drama series Springhill in the mid-1990s, broke the news of his involvement with Doctor Who in response to a question at a BBC Writersroom event at the Manchester Literature Festival earlier this month.
Boyce was a writer for the Granada soap opera Coronation Street early in his career, and later wrote the screenplays for several films by the award-winning director Michael Winterbottom, including 24 Hour Party People (featuring Christopher Eccleston). He is also an acclaimed author of children's fiction, having won the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Prize, and the writer of official sequels to Ian Fleming's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. In 2012, Boyce worked closely in collaboration with director Danny Boyle to write the script for the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games, which received worldwide praise.
It is unknown yet whether Boyce's script is to be part of series eight in 2014, or a later run, or whether it will eventually appear at all.

Some fans have felt that the 50th anniversary year has come up a little short in terms of the actual amount of Doctor Who episodes being broadcast, 10 in total by the end of 2013. The majority of which were remaining episodes from Series 7 held over from 2012.
However, there is some good news for the future at least. Moffat has confirmed that we can expect a full series for Peter Capaldi’s debut run next year.
In an interview with Broadcast, Moffat says they are committed to producing “at least” 13 episodes in 2014. Although, it is not clear if this includes the 2014 Christmas special or not. Earlier reports did suggest that Series 8 would be slightly reduced to 12 episodes as opposed to 13.
Speaking about the difficulty of juggling his current workload on the show Moffat said: “There’s always a point in production, usually half-way, maybe two thirds, through a series when you realise you’re juggling at least one aspect of each show at once: maybe a press launch for one, another in the edit and I might not have written the last one. You wake up in the night thinking about 13 emergencies, each of them equally calamitous. As a lifestyle choice, it’s questionable.”
He adds: “One of the hardest things for me to do is work out when I’ll have time to write. A whole week can disappear when I haven’t had a moment to sit down. I was amazed recently when I got a script ready in time for the tone meeting.”

Reports in today’s Daily Express indicate that incoming Time Lord Peter Capaldi has signed up to a single run of 13 episodes of Doctor Who, and no more.
However, Kasterborites, we’re hopeful that this is nothing more than tabloid mischief-making.
Running under the headline “Who’s Next? New Doctor Peter Capaldi may stay just 13 episodes” the evidence presented to back up the claim is pretty thin – in fact, it’s non-existent. Stating that the Twelfth Doctor will appear in the forthcoming Christmas episode, the Express continues:
Capaldi, 55, will star in two series of six episodes each before waving goodbye to the Timelord – or signing a new deal depending on how popular he has been.
Moffat, 51, confirmed that the former The Thick Of It star will be seen in 13 episodes next year.
(Steven Moffat’s “confirmation” appears to come from the recent Broadcast interview.)
As you can see, there is nothing here that stands as a direct quote. Furthermore, it is unlikely that an actor of Peter Capaldi’s stature would commit to more than one series at a time anyway.
So, cool your boots: we’ve still got at least a year of the Twelfth Doctor, so lets enjoy it before we start the doom and gloom of casting another actor, okay?

Eccleston, at the time already a well known actor, only signed for one series, naturally with the option to extent. But he simply chose not to. Apparently there were aspects with the production he was not happy with.
Tennant and Smith weren't nearly as established as actors so they signed up for longer (also Tennant was a lifelong Dr. Who fan)

Production on the eighth series of Doctor Who in the 21st Century is now in full swing, with filming taking place in Cardiff at the Roath Lock studios and on location in Cardiff. The BBC have announced details of the first couple of episodes to be filmed, alongside the first official image of new Doctor Peter Capaldi alongside Jenna Coleman:
Arriving on set in Cardiff to begin filming, Peter Capaldi said:
New job, first day, slightly nervous. Just like the Doctor, I'm emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world.
Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, added:
First the eyebrows! Then, at Christmas, the face! Coming soon, the whole Doctor. In the Cardiff studios, the Capaldi era begins.
Ben Stephenson, Controller of Drama Commissioning, said:
Excitement and anticipation fills the air as Peter Capaldi’s Doctor takes control of the TARDIS for the very first time today. It’s going to be one hell of a ride and I can't wait for the journey to start.
Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One, commented:
A new year, a new face, a new Doctor! 2014 has arrived and it's Peter Capaldi's time so let the adventures begin!
Moffat has written the first episode of this series, which is directed by Ben Wheatley. Wheatley is a newcomer to Doctor Who, but his previous work includes The Wrong Door and Ideal. The director will also undertake the following episode, which has been written by Phil Ford, whose previous credits include The Waters of Mars for Doctor Who, as well as several episodes of Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Other confirmed production crew include Brian Minchin (The Time of The Doctor) as executive producer alongside Moffat, and the return of producers Nikki Wilson (The Waters of Mars, The Sarah Jane Adventures) and Peter Bennett (several episodes from Series 5 and also Torchwood: Children of Earth).
Filming is expected to continue until August 2014.
As reported above, filming has commenced on location in Cardiff, which revealed other characters involved with the opening episode.
Filming took place at the Maltings in Cardiff this morning, a location recognisable in Doctor Who from its previous appearances in stories such as Gridlock, A Good Man Goes to War and especially The Next Doctor. This time around it was dressed to represent a wharf, and filming also included the now familiar "Paternoster Gang" of Madame Vastra, Strax and Jenny, as played by Neve McIntosh, Dan Starkey and Catrin Stewart.

Reaffirming last year’s edict that no Doctor Who series should be torn asunder, Steven Moffat has been just as frugal with the news as well – both stating that there will be a Series 9 in 2015 (like it was ever in any doubt) and that it too will be a full run.
Commenting in DWM, Moffat said:
“We’re not going to do splits (for series 8), and the same format will repeat exactly the following year like that. So it will be the traditional form.”
So it looks as though Doctor Who will be making the autumn months its permanent home with Series 8, rumoured to be airing over August/September, the Christmas Special on Christmas Day and then, to speculate further, back again in autumn 2015 for Series 9.
While the splits were an interesting and, if rumours are true, necessary experiment, a concentrated run of episodes always worked better; the cliffhangers didn’t leave you ‘hanging’ around too much, there’s more room for stories to breathe and develop because the pay-off isn’t months away; meaning more compact, concise episodes (and the return of the two-parter) and, if nothing else, it reaffirms the audiences faith in the show by – again, according to rumours – airing it against the Bank Holiday banshee that is The X Factor.

The BBC have released the first promotional image of the costume for the Twelfth Doctor, as played by Peter Capaldi.
Commenting on his costume, Capaldi said:
He's woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.
Lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat added:
New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over - Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!
Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, commented:
Peter Capaldi's Doctor is officially recorded in history today with the unveiling of his new costume. It's sharp, smart and stylish - The Twelfth Time Lord means business.
