MONDAY, AUGUST 19
BEN-HUR---an "inside source" said Timur Bekmambetov (WANTED) is in talks to direct the MGM remake of the Oscar-winning 1959 movie which starred Charlton Heston. MGM and Bekmambetov's representatives refused to comment on the report. The script is by Keith Clarke (THE WAY BACK).
Also, Bekmambetov is the producer of the new horror movie SQUIRRELS in which a man returns to his hometown to investigate his father's mysterious death and encounters an army of flesh-eating squirrels.
GHOST SHARK---review of Syfy's latest shark movie which stars Mackenzie Rosman (7TH HEAVEN) and Richard Moll (NIGHT COURT). It premiers on August 22.
"We begin on a boat at night. A bunch of hillbillies who seem to have wandered over from Duck Dynasty are fishing in an attempt to win a $30,000 prize. When a great white shark kills their prize before they can reel it in, they kill it by snagging the shark with a crossbow and then plopping a grenade into its mouth. Almost immediately the shark turns into a ghost and kills everyone on the boat.
Cut to teenagers at the beach. Ava (Mackenzie Rosman), Blaise (Dave Davis), and their friends are swimming and enjoying rides on a jet ski. The translucent ghost shark ruins the fun by biting a girl on the jet ski in half. Of course, when the teens tell the sheriff that a see-through shark is the killer, they are laughed at. He will become a believer soon enough. This shark is (apparently) out to kill the entire town and get its vengeance..."
THE TWILIGHT ZONE---Joseph Kosinski (OBLIVION, TRON: LEGACY) will direct the movie based on the classic Rod Serling tv series.
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2---new photo released teasing The Sinister Six might be in the sequel, Earlier, director Marc Webb said, "I'm a fan of The Sinister Six. I'll say that. I think if you pay attention to the second movie, you'll see hints of what's to come."
THE HOBBIT: DESOLATION OF SMAUG---new poster released for the movie.
X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST---first official photo of the movie was released after filming just concluded in Montreal.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER---Samuel L. Jackson said about Robert Redford's role in the sequel, "He's part of that World Security Council I was talking to in (THE AVENGERS), just he wasn't there. We also know each other because we've been comrades for a very long time. There's some stuff that's said that gives you an idea of how he's been part of that environment for a long time and the kind of guy he was."
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY---Gregg Henry (SLITHER) confirmed he will appear in the movie in an undisclosed role.
SUPERMAN VS. BATMAN---Nathan Fillion (FIREFLY) commented on rumors he's a candidate to play Batman by denying he's been approached and added, "I think I'd make an excellent Bruce Wayne; I think I'd make a terrible Batman."

TED 2---Mark Wahlberg and Seth McFarlane are returning for the sequel with McFarlane saying, "We're aiming for a 2015 Passover release date." It's not known if Mila Kunis is returning.
MARVEL---Mark Millar, consultant to 20th Century Fox, said the X-Men might meet The Fantastic Four in a movie, "Without question I think you have to see some of these guys showing up in each other’s movies. I think the most exciting thing in superhero movies, until The Avengers came along, was when Nick Fury showed up in Iron Man. Even though it was a guy with an eye patch it was really cool – and I expect we will see more of that."
RED BLOODED AMERICA---Bradley Cooper is in negotiations to star and produce this Lance Armstrong biomovie.
FALLEN---movie underway based on the novel series starring Addison Timlin (CALIFORNICATION) and Jeremy Irvine (WAR HORSE).

Sequels, reboots, remakes - YAAAAAAWWWWWWNNNNNNNN!

No surprise, after all the remake has been released 54 years ago.
Yes and no. A lot of the 1959 version was indeed a rehash of stuff in the 1925 Niblo version, but the original novel is a classic and can be 'adapted' ad infinitum, it's a book before it's a film. Remakes should NOT be 'remakes' but rather new workings of the book.
It has so many allegorical layers, it would be a hard job to create a really AWARE 2013 version, and one imagines they probably won't. Another 'Gladiator' type cock-fest of machos in leather probably. It's maybe a job for Spielberg, whose Jewish awareness and Joseph Campbell mythic understanding might get all the layers. It's NOT a job for Ridley Scott.
But you never know. They might be responsible and use their intelligence.
People do tend to rehash and plunder earlier adaptations in these films, and hope no-one notices. Even someone of the stature of Anthony Burgess could steal scenes from 'The Ten Commandments' (like the presentation of Pharaoh's dead son to the idol) and rehash them for the very intelligent 'Moses the Lawgiver', scenes that are not from Exodus or his own psyche. He nicked a few ideas from 'King of Kings' for the infinitely better 'Jesus of Nazareth' too (like Judas Iscariot's link with the zealots), that are clear influences plotwise.
The temptation is just too great I suppose. The 2010 Canadian 'Ben-Hur' took its cues from the 1959 film, far more than from the novel, though there are elements of the original novel revived and cheekily 'brought up to date'.

They should get Ridley Scott to do the new BEN-HUR.
Though he already dealt with Rome in GLADIATOR, and I read that all he really likes is to create environments...
Of course, there'll never be another Miklos Rozsa score for it....
Sad.

I was merely hinting that, generally, remaking an established, multi-award winning classic cannot end well for its remakers. Sadly you didn't get that.
