A great deal on the excellent Alien Anthology Blu Ray box set. It is the Amazon Deal Of The Day today .

To be honest its been available for around $25 for awhile, but this might prompt those who haven't picked this up to go ahead and click...

Wish I had a Bluray player, because that's a great offer -- even if there's a good amount of shipping on top of that. I'm still content with my massive Anthology 9-DVD box set, though, and if I got this I would need to find a way to sell that.

I've said it before and will say it again....this Blu-Ray set alone is worth the cost of buying a player.

Precisely. You can get a basic Blu player cheap these days. I'd say buy this set now and get a player in the near future. smile

The UK set is also going cheap, and it's region free.

There's been a lot of great Blu Ray sales lately. This is how you move stock. Especially when the economy is still very hard on a lot of ppl.

Thanks for the heads-up, Mike. Ordered this on impulse yesterday evening and today, the next morning, UPS dropped it onto my doormat. Have to admit I resisted the 'quadrilogy' for so long because I disliked the fourth film so much; but I wanted "Alien" on Blu, and I'm very glad I picked this up. It's a handsome set. Can't wait to dig into it. Might even give that stupid fourth film another look.

It's currently 12,45 euro (16 dollars) at zavvi, I think I paid 34 euro for it when it came out, but as others said before it is worth buying a player for. As are many other blu-rays I've been getting. My collection has increased significantly in the last half year and I'd still place the Alien boxset in the top 3.

Almost clicked, regret I didn't. I was a little ALIEN-ed-out at the time--been spending a lot of time wading through PROMETHEUS of late--and didn't like the feeling that a bargain was forcing my hand. You know: You're not the boss of me, bargain! And then there was the flies in ALIEN's ointment factor; should an in-a-class-by-itself classic be forced to keep such company (pick your personal worst sequel)?

I imagined being awed by ALIEN's new, 4K master, then angered by AlienS, no matter how good it looked. I can always ask of myself (about Cameron's): Are you not entertained? And, in truth, I am not not. Which is to say: I am reliably entertained by AlienS...but rightly pissed too; every time (we all have our reasons). Alien 3 has a fitful, ruddy, dank, dingy majesty...but how often am I game for a fitful, ruddy, dank, dingy majesty? Resurrection is glop in search of a vision. Or maybe its vision is glop. Is this a distinction without any difference? It probably deserves another look.

So we're left with the apparently unparallelled extras and packaging. Somehow, on balance, my clicking finger was stayed. It went right down to the minute.

I woke today with a pang of regret that made me suspect a face hugger within.

I'll probably buy it now, anyway, at the market average of about 35 bucks. Exactly how Bezos had forseen it. The real business is in post-bargain remorse!

'Alien' Blu-ray is just $10, Cooper -- that's what I was going to buy, before yesterday's offer turned up, for many of the reasons you cited.

Thanks for the heads up. That was my "Quadrilogy" strategy, just went for the two-disk ALIEN release for the new transfer and to check out Riddles' re-cut, w/cocoon sequence, etc. Never regretted it (much). And since many of the extras about ALIEN on the Blu were ported from the DVD edition, I won't miss them on the Blu. Thinking it over.

Let us know what you think of the Anthology, the news transfers, etc.

Alien is one of those picture that is so well made, when I watch it I appreciate it a lot.

Overall, I have not enjoyed gross or horror films that much, so I just do not see savoring these very often. The first two are terrific pictures, the rest less so. For that price the first film alone is worth it.

$20 bucks for this set is such a steal. I was ecstatic back when when it dropped to $70. wink

Let us know what you think of the Anthology, the news transfers, etc.

Cooper, I watched ALIEN director's cut Blu this evening and the image and sound are stunningly gorgeous.

Update: Viewed the original theatrical cut of ALIENS for the first time on Blu last night, and that is also the best I've ever seen it on video. On previous VHS and DVD releases, the movie had always appeared quite grainy, but the Blu-ray was crisp, sharp and had a magnificent DTS audio presentation.

Also, I should have mentioned, the Blu-ray presentation of ALIEN was the first time the contrast has been correct. Space scenes now have rich blacks and no visible garbage mattes. That had always puzzled me because I believe most of the model work work for ALIEN was done the old fashioned way, by making multiple exposures on the original negative, so I was dismayed when the previous 20th Anniversary DVD had blobby areas, black on black, around scenes of the Nostromo in space. Whatever those anomalies were, they've fixed them now.

Another Update, much later: Alien³ was better than I recalled, the restored version at least, and I've only seen the movie once before on its original theatrical run. Alien 4 I hated when it was released, and I hated all over again. It was also the worst-looking of the four, at least to my eyes, with grainy visual effects shots, and the 'restored' opening shot was just appalling. Never want to see that film again!

Other than that, it's a handsome box set, and worth the price for the first three films and exhaustive extras. I watched all of the supplemental features, even those for the fourth film, and I was entertained. One last caveat, though: the extras do not include the original making of Aliens documentary; there is footage from that, but not all the footage (it's on YouTube).

Glad to hear it. In whatever form I get it, I will get it. With each successive home video format, ALIEN seems to keep yielding more detail to savor, so it's going to be great to check out this new transfer on Blu-ray...especially since I got burned when that "Director's Cut" theatrical re-release was dramatically scaled back by FOX just before release. My nearest option was New York City; it would've been a bit of a drive.

Sounds like the new Blu will be a nice consolation prize.

Funny. As bulky as it is (not quite so bad as the ones for "The Sound of Music" or "Ben-Hur" or "Planet of the Apes" or "Gone With The Wind" or "Wizard of Oz," but still pretty big), I've been unable to find MY copy of it for almost a year! That's what happens when you let things pile up! I think I paid about $60 for it when I bought it. Yikes!

Incidentally, my Samsung Blu-ray player, even though I had it connected to the web and was able to update it whenever it detected new software, still had problems with parts of some of the films, mainly "Aliens" and "Alien3," and it wasn't until I bought an even more advanced Panasonic that it stopped freezing on me. So if you have a 1st or 2nd generation Blu-ray player, and especially if it's not connected to the web, you might have a problem playing these.
