This one is another favorite. I love the kind of wall-of-sound, kaleidoscopic feel...

I'd be hard pressed to believe Washed Out could top themselves with this dance track...

I'm gonna go with "Love Trinity" as my favorite Life Without Buildings song. Plus a lovely description of the singer below...

Sue Tompkins might be the most striking indie singer of the decade. She sounds like an internal monologue. She rattles out streams of words, repeating phrases and fragments like someone compulsively murmuring a list she's trying not to forget. She rolls and stretches words around in her mouth. She makes girlish exclamations and then whips around to chest-beating boasts, defiant dares, wounded questions. Her voice bounces and twirls acrobatically all around the music, then pulls itself up into passionate demands like lines ripped from an argument: "Look back and say that I didn't!" She does all this and yet sounds really normal and down-to-earth and awesome about it. Glasgow's Life Without Buildings backed up her gorgeous high-wire act with perfectly understated guitar work, and made just this one incredible, gem-like album-- lovable, beautiful, and moving, the kind of treasure with a mood and aesthetic entirely its own. Then they broke up. It's a good thing this one's so endlessly replayable, so worth poring over every tic, stutter, and syllable. --Nitsuh Abebe

I like how layers are gradually added over the organic piano keys. Dramatic, atmospheric, and mysterious.

Another interesting listen, like hearing raindrops hit off metallic items or something. Difficult to describe...

It has been described as "shoegaze", but maybe post-shoegaze? Anyway, the soundscapes are larger than life. An incredible sound ahead of its time IMO.

For a brief moment Tycho seems to have perfected the Boards of Canada thing. Video was made by a fan.

Still on the high of the release of "Ten", Pearl Jam put this video together I believe in Hawaii. Where a video like Guns 'n' Roses "Patience" gets caught in rock cliche, the video for "Oceans" uses carefully edited iconography to convey the presumed legendary status of a rock band. It is often overshadowed by the "Jeremy" video, but the editing is exceptional...

I cannot seem to find just the right track. There's either the remix, or the original, though it seems like the radio version had a slightly faster tempo. Ah well...

Guess I prefer the alternate version slightly more since the rhythm is less interrupted. But then there's the video for the original and the production values are quite good. Some excellent moody atmosphere from the synth.

Edit: I should correct myself. The alternate version allows the synths to breath more, in my bias.

There are a good handful of DCFC songs I think are pop perfection (Photobooth, Movie Script Ending, Title & Registration, etc), but I'll go with this one. Their instrumentation is precise but not rigid...

I think this one still holds up pretty well. It is appealing to me because of its indie pop sensibilities (sounding under-produced in a good way).

Perry Farrell was the lead singer of Jane's Addiction, and after the band broke up in the early '90s he created Pornos For Pyros. The hit song from the band was "Pets", and though the music is charmingly pop, the lyrics are quite sinister (or cynical maybe). He's basically saying humanity is destroying themselves, and if a superior alien race comes along we humans "would make great pets!" How much merit that has I don't know, but I admire the reflective thought. Farrell also looks quite beautiful in his colorful dyed hair and suit...
