This past Friday, the Starz cable TV network aired the debut of the 4th series (season) of Torchwood, the adult-oriented Doctor Who spin-off. A co-production of the BBC and Starz, the original production team is back for Torchwood - Miracle Day, with some additional cast and crew from this side of the ocean (such as Emmy-nominated writer Jane Espenson, known for Battlestar Galactica, Warehouse 13, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gilmore Girls). The ratings were high and the reaction quite positive, and fans are not only waiting for tonight's airing of the second episode (out of ten), but are already asking about home video releases!
Overseas in the U.K. (where the BBC broadcasts episodes six days after Starz airs them in the States), fans have already noted a mid-November schedule for DVDs and Blu-ray Discs of this production. The assumption from our readers has been that these would be out at the same time in North America, since BBC Video usually tries to sync up their Region 2 and Region 1 releases of all Doctor Who-related items. However, today we've noticed that the BBC America Shop's blog actually answered this question a week ago, with their regular Friday post. At the bottom of their write-up, they remind folks about that evening's season debut of Torchwood - Miracle Day. They also tell us that we won't see the home video release until 2012!
BROADCAST ALERT: The next season of Torchwood premieres on Starz on Friday, July 8, at 10pm Eastern/Pacific time. Catch it now; the DVD won’t be out till next year.
We're not happy it will take that long, either...but stay tuned, and we'll bring you all the details about this title, just as soon as it's all made available.

Torchwood HQ is gone, but the need for Captain Jack (John Barrowman) and Gwen (Eve Myles) is greater than ever to solve the mystery of why people have suddenly stopped dying. Bill Pullman (Independence Day) and Mekhi Phifer (ER, 8 Mile) also star in Torchwood's first stateside season, seen last summer on Starz. All 10 episodes; Many Extras!
Several weeks ago we passed along a scan of a catalog mailed out by the BBC America Shop, which displayed an availability date of March 13th for Torchwood - Miracle Day in the USA. A short time ago today, the folks at BBC Video formally announced the title for DVD and Blu-ray Disc, giving the finalized North American street date as being a few weeks later than that: April 3rd! As previously reported, the cost is $49.98 SRP in the USA for the DVD, and $59.99 SRP for the high-def Blu-ray Disc. Both come with all 10 episodes running 529 minutes on 4 discs, plus bonus material:

Just like the BBC changed the schedule when finalizing this title, they also changed the package art a bit from the images we've previously shown you. Essentially they're the same basic idea, except Gwen and Rex have been added in to back up Captain Jack.

Russell T Davies was a guest on the Graham Norton show on Saturday, where he discussed his new series starting on Monday and Tuesday next week, Wizards vs Aliens. During the interview, the question of future series of Torchwood was raised, to which he answered:
I loved making it over there (in the USA), and I would have carried on if circumstances hadn't brought me back to this country, so it's kind of in limbo for me at the moment. I'm not working on it at the moment, I'm only working on Wizards vs Aliens - when I get back to work one day, I don't know, it'll be old news to the BBC!
It's not officially (cancelled), it's in a nice limbo where it can stew - those shows can come back in ten, twenty years time.

Mike: Re: 20 years is about right. The series started out pretty well but just when it found it's legs and Russell was seemingly given more latitude it just seemed to become more and more of a soap opera.
In the "Miracle Day" incarnation, it was enough to watch it when it was first broadcast, but I have no desire to spend the money to have it on home video. I AM a fan of John Barrowman, but more as a singer than an actor.

SO with you here Roy. Torchwood was always a series that to my mind was ALWAYS flawed.
I speak as a Doctor Who fan of the highest order. For me 'adult' meant stuff that's a little too strong for what we in the UK call the 'tea time' audience. What we got first time 'round was extremely annoying attempts at 'adult' which was swearing and some sexual scenes.
Things improved a little with Series 2. But the team seem so inept! Secret, but driving around in a vehicle that was clearly marked with their logo! And which was easily stolen from this highly trained bunch.
Series 3 was the best EVER slice. It was like a really well constructed, properly adult, Doctor Who serial from a time after they'd done away with serials over four episodes. Every episode left us with a feeling that we needed to see the next, just as Game of Thrones does now. Everything I expected an adult version of Doctor Who to be.
Series 4? Oh dear. Ineptness ruled!!! The regular cast were gone. Some stuff looked great, other stuff felt like it was amateur night. The worst thing was when we were left with what looked like a giant vagina. Mother Earth!!!?? Very subtle.
I'm not eager for it to come back, though I'd be very supportive. Russell T Davies deserves so many accolades for bringing Doctor Who back. But his attempts to do a kids and an adult spin-off, though admirable were less successful to me.

I liked Torchwood series one and two on different levels. As stated flawed, but at times great. Children of Earth knocked my socks off! Never saw series four as I read it wasn't worth watching.
I liked the first three series, but really disliked the fourth. I may splash out for the boxset. I guess I could always use Miracle Day as a couple of beer mats.

Of course it's worth watching the once. I've never been put off watching something by someone else's opinion, because Im too determined to see for myself. Gosh, I even went to see Batman and Robin! As with Doctor Who (and spin-offs) I'm too much of a fan to stay away. And I was SO pleased I went to see The Lone Ranger with the same attitude as I so totally disagreed with all the critics.
Torchwood has fine ingredients, but rarely gets the mix right, apart from Children of Earth which was virtually perfect. The drama, performances and the writing was all great. The only silly bit was Jack's business with the concrete which was hilarious. I also don't get why they had to strip down the team. If they're going to bump members off, fine, but keep topping up with new recruits. And I would prefer a clearer connection to the previous versions of the outfit, from Queen Victoria onwards. But I DID like having Martha Jones on board. The lovely Freema Agyman was a very welcome link to the parent show, as was acknowledging UNIT.

I rarely miss something based on other ppls reviews. Especially since my sensibilities and tastes seem to be radically different from the norm. Agreed about Freema, she is lovely.  Hopefully in a week or two I can put TW back into rotation.
