When I was 9 years old (in '84), I owned a pair of shiny gold parachute pants. Some kids laughed, but I knew they were special.

Back in the mid-2000s, when my wife and I were in the middle of a two-year vegetarian stint, I ate a couple pieces of pepperoni at a work potluck while no one was looking.

When I play Freecell, I have to line up the finished suits in the order Spade, Diamond, Club, Heart.
I don't really know why I do it, but I do think the handicap makes the game more challenging to play.

Or I may be retarded.

Around 1970 I wore a pair of mauve loon pants with a big flare, god I loved those trousers (plus a three button tie-dye t-shirt). Actually, thinking about them is what stopped me getting a tattoo, what seems like a great idea one year, may not be such a great idea ten years down the line.

When i was at school, our year had cross-country runs.
We used to duck out at the school grounds, smoke and wait for teacher and runners to return.
Rubbing mud on ourselves we would join the pack and sprint to the gymnasium.
Bein fresh we always won!

Later all four of us got asked to represent the school!

And all four of us came last. Teachers were baffled

Are you serious? Are you one of those people that still uses the word "retarded" and hasn't clued into the fact that it's disrespectful to mentally handicapped individuals? It's pretty common knowledge that that word can be very offensive these days if it's used casually and out of context, as you have.

I'm reclaiming the word.
I don't really care much for how the meaning of words get twisted according to the fads of the day.

Incidentally, it's only offensive if I call YOU retarded.

Hey Oct apparently you cant call yourself retarded.
Perhaps you could email all your posts to deputy riley first and he can edit what you are allowed to call yourself and what your not. Then we could have it ratified at a bi-monthly meeting !! wink

Not a bad idea.
(But I was under the impression that Supreme Executive Power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.)

Once more, "BillCarson" (sick) has shown his true colours. Instead of posting something that he's actually ashamed of doing, he has posted something which he "pretends" he is ashamed of, whilst seeking attention through the ambiguity of the "naughty" thing he did in 1954, a thing of which he is secretly proud. And he expects us to fawn over his derring-do, putting him on the pedestal of the real rebel heroes such as Marlon Brando, Che Guevara, Dean Martin, Robert Mitchum, Lee Marvin and Sid Vicious. Well, let me tell you BillCarson (sick) - it's NOT clever, and it's NOT funny.

Tell us something you're REALLY ashamed of doing. Something really pathetic, really not cool. You haven't got the cojones, have you?

Oh, by the way, I've never done anything embarrassing.

You know what man, I was just trying to help those seeking compassion by pointing it out to someone who may not be aware. I'm trying to support a justifiable cause of a segment of the population that deserves your respect. If you want to continue to make jokes and ignore my point, that's fine. Just remember there are something close to 200,000 other words in the English language to choose from, but if you simply have to use one that actually offends a large number of people, do what you gotta do. Never mind trying to enlighten yourself.
Have a wonderful day.

Riley, I have no beef with you. You seem a good chap.
But you don't get to tell me how to talk.
I trust in my own sensibilities to dictate my verbiage.
I also trust in the mods to decide such things, because they can suss out whether or not offense was my INTENT, with fairness and not cater to overt political correctness.

(I don't purport to speak for Josh, but if the spirit of the thread is as tongue-in-cheek as I think it is, then you've got to get on board with that--or else a good portion of the comments to come might be as offensive to your sensibilities.)

But as far as I'm concerned, you and I are good.

I used to be a nail-biter, myself.
At some point in my teens, I think I saw a photograph of my hands and I was so repulsed that whatever it was in my brain that governed nail-biting just shut down completely. A big part of it was also having a girlfriend for whom I wanted to look my best.
True story.

But then I started nose-picking.
Whole different problem.
I still struggle with it.

As someone who spent 10 years as an advocate for children with special needs, I can only ask you to visit a site called Spread the Word to End the Word. I grew to know and love many parents and children who flinched at the mention of this word. I keep in contact with many of them still. I am not trying to come off as holier than though. I am just sharing another point of view.
