Ahh The 50's. Now we're talkin'. I see you (righfully) listed many of Anthony Mann's great Westerns. You've left one out, however, his first, and in my opinion his best: 'Devil's Doorway'. If you haven't seen it, please do. It's available (significantly discounted at Amazon) from Warner Archives. I have just completed a review of it at the link below:

Oh, and I would also add 'The Tall T' and 'High Noon' to your list.

I suppose the fifties is the big decade for western (but a lot of great westerns made in the sixties), this is not a best of, just my favourites:

Winchester '73 (1950) Antony Mann
Across The Wide Missouri (1951) William Wellman
Distant Drums (1951) Raoul Walsh
Bend Of The River (1952) Antony Mann
The Big Sky (1952) Howard Hawks
Broken Lance (1954) Edward Dmytryk
The Last Hunt (1956) Richard Brooks
The Last Wagon (1956) Delmer Davis
The Tall T (1957) Budd Boetticher
Ride Lonesome (1959) Budd Boetticher

...& no Searchers! The Garden Of Evil might have got in, but I've never seen it! I'll wait for a Blu release now, the first time I see it should be in HD.

No, Mac. I don't like it. I'm a diehard Anthony Mann aficionado.
Anyway, draw your top 50's list.

I know Devil's Doorway. It's a good and inspired Injun-related film shot in black and white.
I didn't include Apache by Robert Aldrich which was also about the Injun topic.

I forgot an odd one that I liked very much:
Rancho Notorious (1952) (Fritz Lang)

This one has a song used a narrative tool that links the whole film.

"Friendly Persuasion" (Zinnemann)

It might not qualify, but what is its genre?

i can see where these threads are going... right into the arms of the Daddy - the 60s!!

however 50s provided reams and reams of decent watchable westerns.

many of which starred...you know who!! i will get the choir ready.

Wonderful country and big country get my vote. but just too many to list and credit.

I haven't seen Delmer Davies' Jubal mentioned here. I find it quite excellent and magnificently photographed.

Otherwise George Stevens is my favorite director in this genre for the 1950s. Shane and - although it's modern and not really an example of the genre - the great Texas saga Giant.

I love "Giant" - a great big ball of cheese and absolutely wonderful!! Stevens was one of my favourite directors (particularly the screwball "Talk of the Town"!!!).

So many great movies, with so many great scores. I'm very happy to see BEND OF THE RIVER getting attention right out of the starting gate from the very first post.

Hans told me that at the gala premiere he and Mrs. Salter happened to sit behind Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Stewart. At the film's conclusion, the Salters overheard the Stewarts agreeing with each other that the musical score had been a big plus...

A really fine and overlooked little film is THE SUNDOWNERS (not the Mictchum/Kerr film) which was made in 1950; Robert Preston is wonderful in it.

Another western film that nobody mentioned:
Johnny Guitar (1954) (Nicholas Ray)
