For The Forum's Non-American members. (And sadly, probably a majority OF Americans).

I asked a recent doctorate if he knew the Federalist Papers. He said - "you mean like 1's, 5's, 10's, 20's, 50's...like that?"

He wasn't kidding.

One could fill the Grand Canyon--wherever that is-- with what Americans don't know.

Learning geography via science fiction films. That's ok, I discovered classical music via Bugs Bunny shorts.

This German would score 50/50 and probably do a reasonable job at putting the approximate position of each state's capital on a map, too.

Everyone else can go teach their grandmothers to suck eggs.

ChristianKuhn: We're a nation of idiots over here. I'm including a link to a story out today about one of our prized members. I should add that I learned there were 16 States within Germany, however, I can name only a few. Sorry. Let's see, Saxony, Southern or is it Lower-Saxony(?),Bremen, Bavaria, Rhine Land, and I remember two cities that were state too, Berlin and Hamburg. The rest I've no idea. Too bad there's not one with Schnitzel!

Keep in mind this terrorism business is a joke. A few private contractors make billions, by employing low wage, little trained "security guards". People are misinformed if they think TSA or whatever are an elite group "keeping America safe".

If I had a dime for all the American bands I've seen perform in Belgium shouting out "hey Brussels", at various festivals not taking place in Brussels (they must have come straight from the airport there), I'd probably have a dollar.

Did this is during a break right now:

Why is this considered difficult? (I ask half-seriously, half-kiddingly.)

I can remember reading about a US post office clerk telling a customer they needed to pay for international postage to send a letter to New Mexico.

Does it have something to do with the 4 color map problem?

This article may provide some insight into why it is so difficult to remember the names of multiple named regions enclosed within a single boundary.

I did a test to see how many US states I could name (just name, not place though I did know the majority of those) and this is the result. I did an extensive trip through the west coast which is why I probably am more acquainted with those states.

In all seriousness I have trouble recognizing the states in the center of the country. The coastal states all have unique borders (shapes) which make them easier to remember.
