TUESDAY, JUNE 10

AVATAR---James Cameron confirmed that Sigourney Weaver is returning as a different character for the three sequels, "Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made ALIENS. We're good friends who've always worked well together, so it just feels right that she's coming back for the AVATAR sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she's playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films." Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang and Zoe Saldana are also returning.

THE GOONIES---Sean Astin said he will return for the sequel, "My first thought when Dick [Richard Donner] said he was doing that was like, ‘Alright, maybe this time it's true!' I hope it's true. I certainly like the idea of doing it. I don't know if I'd be in it or not. If they really wanted us to be in it, I'm sure there would be some way to work it out."
Astin added that Corey Feldman also will return, "We talk a lot. Corey and I are buddies. Oh, he's fired up. He's ready to go."
Astin said the sequel might focus on the children of the kids from the original movie, "I think that's what they want to do. I think they want to focus primarily on the kids. I think the audience may be split on that, so they're trying to figure it out."

RED SPARROW---movie underway based on the novel about a female Russian intelligence agent who is assigned to seduce a young CIA agent and then joins him in finding a high-level Russian mole in Washington, DC. David Fincher is in talks to direct and Rooney Mara is in talks to star. Eric Warren Singer (AMERICAN HUSTLE) is in negotiations to write the script.

ALL THE WAY---Steven Spielberg miniseries underway based on the Broadway play about President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Spielberg wants Tony-winning Bryan Cranston to reprise his role as LBJ for the miniseries.

HAIL CAESAR---George Clooney and Josh Brolin will star in this comedy movie from the Coen Brothers about a 1950s Hollywood fixer.

GHOSTBUSTERS 3---Sigourney Weaver said her character's son, Oscar, from GHOSTBUSTERS 2, will be a Ghostbuster in the latest sequel.

US & THEM---Fox cancelled the sitcom starring Jason Ritter and Alexis Bledel before it premiered. It was a remake of the British sitcom GAVIN & STACY.

GRIMSBY---spy spoof movie underway in which a British intelligence agent goes on the run with his idiot football fan brother. Mark Strong, Sacha Baron Cohen and Ian McShane star.

Oh, can you imagine what a good score we could get it it was David Shire hired, and not Ross/Rezzznor?

Kids? I thought Astin, Feldman, et al., all aged along with the rest of us.

Too bad the original film *didn't* focus on the kids' friendship instead of dragging along the older brother and the girls. STAND BY ME ended up being the movie about friendship, even their adventure was better if not as loud and annoying, as the stupid fantasy element in The Goonies.

Oh, here's my "heartfelt" Goonies thread from some years ago:

Wow, way to go with that 90's reference! Kids these days don't actually know who Britney Spears is anymore.

Perhaps, but bad taste is timeless.

Of course they do. She's in the news enough, just not nearly as much as the Kardashians.

Ugh. Avatar. Who cares?

Me actually.

And given that the first film is the biggest grossing movie of all time, I'll go out on a limb and say a few other people too.

Perhaps you are getting your initials confused - The JC behind Avatar is Jim Cameron. If it had been John Carpenter, you'd have had a valid point given that his movies in the last 25 years have only been seen by four people and his mum... and even his mum hated them. And she had taste. Rumour has it John Carpenter saw a cat doing something funny the other week and was going to video it on his iPhone, but couldn't get the budget together.

Sorry, but Futurama did "Native Americans as aliens" first, and better.*

*Because it was a joke.

Just mention Prometheus or Avatar and watch the argument start.

Personally, I thought Avatar was okay. Not great at all, but decent. It's a predictable movie, but I really enjoyed the Native American metaphor. I've often wondered what the world would be like had the natives beaten the Europeans. I finally got to see it. Take that, whitey! (I'm white. Damn it.)

Does it need a single sequel? Hell no. Does it need dead characters' actors brought back if you just haaaaave to do it? Hell no. It sounds terrible. Count me out.

For all it's mistakes, Prometheus is a vastly better movie.

That's half of the equation that makes the film a bad one, the other half being what you said: it's predictable as hell. "Magic whitey" movies are silly, either way. And "Na'vi"? Cameron really wanted to make sure people got it, huh? wink

P.S. "The Na'vi of 'the Plains'?" LOL! big grin How do "plains" form on a moon that spends a significant amount of time in the shadow of a much larger planet?

You remember a lot more about a movie you don't like than I do about a movie I've seen twice. Um... because it was in the script.

I also think it's insanely hip to shit on Avatar, even five years later.

Personally, I think AVATAR was second only to INGLORIOUS BASTERDS in 2009 -- a fantastic film subscribing to an experience-related form of cinema where story is only the mechanism through which we approach it (and doesn't need that much originality).

Anyway, I look forward to the sequel with great anticipation, although I don't like the fact that Weaver will play a completely different character. Unless she's a twin sister or android or something, I feel that's a continuity break.

I thought Avatar was all right. Don't understand how on earth it made the money that it did, but I liked it enough that I will see at least the first sequel in theaters instead of on Redbox.

My assumption is that Weaver will be unrecognizable, or barely recognizeable, in the role. Her human character died in the first one, and she'll probably be some sort of voice-only or mo-cap CGI creation in the sequels - kind of like John Rhys-Davies playing both Gimli and Treebeard.

LBJ? Should be R rated, and feature as a special grand episode of Law & Order. A stepping-stone prosecution to the Dulles brothers.

James Cameron is in the same peculiar space as Ridley Scott when it comes to sci-fi. Everyone knows these guys are talented enough to come up with something stunning, epic. Or at least a few 'can`t miss' scenes which may be stunning, epic. Nobody wants to take the chance on missing such, so everybody automatically rolls their ticket or DVD/BluRay dice. I believe Prometheus had some superlative visual elements, and that Avatar was a large-scale spectacle of environ and combat. Nothing more. Perhaps unfortunately, that can get interpretted as "everybody loves it/them".
