FRIDAY, MAY 30
STARGATE---MGM/Warner Bros. reboot trilogy underway of the 1994 sci fi movie. Roland Emmerich is returning as director with Dean Devlin returning as producer. MGM CEO Gary Barber said, “We couldn’t be more excited to once again partner with Roland and Dean, the world-class creators of the original STARGATE, to bring their reinvigorated vision of this wildly popular property to audiences of multiple generations. STARGATE is one of the biggest titles in MGM’s vast library, and we look forward to adding this great franchise to our slate.” The original movie starred Kurt Russell and James Spader.
TERMINATOR: GENESIS---photo released of the reboot movie shows Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke (GAME OF THRONES) as Sarah Connor and Jai Courtney (A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD) as Kyle Reese. Schwarzenegger said about his T-800 character, "The way that the character is written, it's a machine underneath. It's this metal skeleton. But above that is human flesh. And the Terminator's flesh ages, just like any other human being's flesh. Maybe not as fast. But it definitely ages."
CLIFFHANGER---remake underway of the 1993 movie that starred Sylvester Stallone, Janine Turner and John Lithgow. Joe Gazzam is the writer.
SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR---poster released showing Eva Green (CASINO ROYALE) as "The Dame". The poster was then rejected by the MPAA, "for nudity - curve of under breast and dark nipple/areola circle visible through sheer gown." The poster's caption says, "I'VE BEEN ESPECIALLY BAD."
A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES---poster released for the Liam Neeson movie that is based on the first novel in the series about ex-New York cop Matt Scudder. He helps a heroin dealer find the men who kidnapped and brutally murdered his wife and discovers they're serial killers who will kill again.
ANT-MAN---James Gunn (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) denied rumors he will replace Edgar Wright as director of ANT-MAN, "Waking up to a bee swarm of complete bulls--t rumors on all sides. Happy Thursday." Rawson Thurber, Adam McKay and Ruben Fleischer have met with Marvel Studios to replace Wright.
SONS OF ANARCHY---Annabeth Gish (THE X-FILES) has joined the cast as new sheriff Althea Jarry who seeks the killers of Sheriff lLi Roosevelt and Tara Knowles. Marilyn Manson will have a recurring role as a white supremacist.
THE GRAY MAN---Sony Pictures franchise underway based on the first novel in the series about an ex-CIA assassin who must save a family he was once assigned to protect while he has been targeted by an international conspiracy.. Anthony and Joe Russo (CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER) will direct the movie.
THE WOMAN IN GOLD---Katie Holmes, Elizabeth McGovern, Jonathan Pryce and Charles Dance will co-star with Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds in this movie about Maria Altmann, a Holocaust survivor who sued Austria to recover her family's artwork, valued at $135 million, that was looted by the Nazis.
THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS---Rhys Ifans will play the Mad Hatter's father in the Tim Burton sequel to ALICE IN WONDERLAND. Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska and Helena Bonham Carter return for the sequel.
BRILLIANCE---Will Smith has left the movie based on the sci fi novel.
SICARIO---Jon Bernthal (THE WALKING DEAD) will co-star with Emily Blunt and Benecio Del Toro in this movie about a female Arizona cop who leads a special ops team to Mexico to take down a drug lord.
IDOL'S EYE---Rachel Weisz is in negotiations to co-star with Robert Pattinson and Robert De Niro in this movie about thieves who rob a man and discover their victim is Chicago mob boss Tony Accardo.
STRANDED---Sony Pictures movie underway starring Kevin James as the head of a family that is shipwrecked on a deserted island.
SOULKEEPERS---movie rights have been bought to the novel series about a teenage boy and his beautiful neighbor who use his powers to protect mankind from Hell's Fallen Angels.
THIRST---producer Anthony Ginnane is remaking his 1979 movie about a descendant of Elizabeth Bathory who is sought by a master race of vampires. He is also remaking the 1981 movie THE SURVIVOR which starred Jenny Agutter as a psychic who investigates an airliner crash which killed 300 people with the pilot being the sole survivor.

I see no problem in remaking CLIFFHANGER, and don't understand the outrage at this proposal. Sure, it's a good potboiler already, but it's very "90s" so there's definitely room for a more contemporary sensibility.
But whats the point? Its not like it was made in the 30's where the style of acting was so different. There's nothing to update effects wise. Hell even the star has had a resurgence of sorts the last few years.
No point, really. Again, I'm not usually a fan of remakes. But I can understand the rationale behind the idea in this 'climate of remakes'. The film is rather dated and the style is very 90's, so there's room for an "update".
In either case, I think it makes more sense than some of the other reboots we've seen in recent years, where they're actually rebooting something that was just rebooted a couple of years earlier (HULK, SPIDERMAN etc.).

Those movies make hundreds of millions of dollars in gross receipts and the genre is hot right now.
Cliffhanger? That's going to be a write-off. There is absolutely no need to remake that film. The remark "It's only 20 years old" is a very valid one in this case.
