Hi everybody, well it's time for me to once again call on the help of the collective brain trust here at FSM. I'm going to buy an iPhone for the first time next week, my first smartphone, upgrading from my ridiculous ancient flip-phone. I'll definitely be getting an iPhone, and not another brand.
Could you all please help me and share your wisdom?
Please use layman's terms! What kind of data plan do you have, or find works best for you? What kind of iPhone models are there out there, which one do you have and/or like? How many gigs of storage space do you have? Any kind of tips on specifics of the iPhone you have, I'd like to know, to help me educate myself in selecting one.
For myself, I don't need a lot of bells and whistles and I don't necessarily need the latest and greatest model. I very infrequently use my phone to just chat or make many calls. I do some texting, but not a lot. I would like a decent camera option for the phone, or maybe that comes standard? Aside from using the phone for a few calls and texts here and there, I'll mostly be using it as a music device/iPod. This is hugely important to me. I'd guess around 60-80gb of storage space should suffice but I plan on using the iPhone a lot for listening to music on the go. I doubt I'll much watch videos and stuff, but I may from time to time (like youtube or something) and doubt I'll be watching actual TV shows or movies on my device.

It's very simple, there are only two current models out there. The iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5S
The 5C is essentially a re-brand of the iPhone 5. Same phone for the most part, but in a different case. Because of that it's a bit cheaper. But still quite expensive.
The iPhone 5S is the current top of the range model, so new hardware and everything.
Each model has different sizes of hard drive space, and different colors.

Android is indeed a more "freeing" operating system - however that freedom does sometimes create issues. When an OS update comes around, you're dependent on your phone manufacturer or service provider to release that to you, sometimes shelled within their own software. This can cause some delays in getting the newest OS updates, or problems with said updates.
iOS is only on Apple's phones, so they design it specifically for those devices - you can be guaranteed that when new software or bug fixes come out, they'll be available for your phone. However, there are downsides - you're limited only to the apps that Apple authorizes/approves of (which is a significant amount, but it's very limiting in the sense that programs can't be written for iOS). iOS also doesn't run Flash.
I have had iPhones for 4-5 years and have been happy with them - nothing that I use my phone for has been limited by the OS limitations. My spouse switched this year from an iPhone to an HTC One with Android, and has had quite a few software problems and been very unhappy - the next phone will not necessarily an iPhone, but will definitely not be an HTC One.

Wow everyone thanks, so much great advice not sure where to begin.
My provider is Verizon. In response to what a few people mentioned, do they offer a pay-as-you-go option/plan?
Also, with Verizon (or any provider?) is it basically two options -- 1) pay more for the phone up front and less monthly over time with more freedom in paying, or 2) pay less for the phone up front and pay more in a locked-in contract over time? Is that basically what it comes down to? In other words, if you do not want to sign a lengthy time contract, do they offer other payment options in as far as how much you pay, etc.? I'll most likely be sticking with Verizon.
I'm basically pretty confused about how to approach the buying the phone and selecting (or avoiding) a lengthy time contract...this seems like such a huge decision and I want to make the right one for me.
(I do appreciate the advice about other types of phones, but I will be getting an iPhone, just fyi!)
