Hi everybody, well it's time for me to once again call on the help of the collective brain trust here at FSM. I'm going to buy an iPhone for the first time next week, my first smartphone, upgrading from my ridiculous ancient flip-phone. I'll definitely be getting an iPhone, and not another brand.

Could you all please help me and share your wisdom?

Please use layman's terms! What kind of data plan do you have, or find works best for you? What kind of iPhone models are there out there, which one do you have and/or like? How many gigs of storage space do you have? Any kind of tips on specifics of the iPhone you have, I'd like to know, to help me educate myself in selecting one.

For myself, I don't need a lot of bells and whistles and I don't necessarily need the latest and greatest model. I very infrequently use my phone to just chat or make many calls. I do some texting, but not a lot. I would like a decent camera option for the phone, or maybe that comes standard? Aside from using the phone for a few calls and texts here and there, I'll mostly be using it as a music device/iPod. This is hugely important to me. I'd guess around 60-80gb of storage space should suffice but I plan on using the iPhone a lot for listening to music on the go. I doubt I'll much watch videos and stuff, but I may from time to time (like youtube or something) and doubt I'll be watching actual TV shows or movies on my device.

Thoughts? Thanks again everybody! smile

It's very simple, there are only two current models out there. The iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5S

The 5C is essentially a re-brand of the iPhone 5. Same phone for the most part, but in a different case. Because of that it's a bit cheaper. But still quite expensive.

The iPhone 5S is the current top of the range model, so new hardware and everything.

Each model has different sizes of hard drive space, and different colors.

Me too! Upgrading my 7-year-old flip phone. Will definitely be curious to see responses!

Even though you have your mind set on an iphone I would give you the advice of checking out smart phones with android or even windows 8 operating system because they will be a lot cheaper and in the case of android you'll have more options, customization and freedom.

This might be helpful:

Also, I would suggest going to a store and compare the available models, you have nothing to lose. smile

Be sure to buy a skin to protect your phone when (not if) you drop it.

Android is indeed a more "freeing" operating system - however that freedom does sometimes create issues. When an OS update comes around, you're dependent on your phone manufacturer or service provider to release that to you, sometimes shelled within their own software. This can cause some delays in getting the newest OS updates, or problems with said updates.

iOS is only on Apple's phones, so they design it specifically for those devices - you can be guaranteed that when new software or bug fixes come out, they'll be available for your phone. However, there are downsides - you're limited only to the apps that Apple authorizes/approves of (which is a significant amount, but it's very limiting in the sense that programs can't be written for iOS). iOS also doesn't run Flash.

I have had iPhones for 4-5 years and have been happy with them - nothing that I use my phone for has been limited by the OS limitations. My spouse switched this year from an iPhone to an HTC One with Android, and has had quite a few software problems and been very unhappy - the next phone will not necessarily an iPhone, but will definitely not be an HTC One.

When you get yours let me know and I'll give you a few essential battery-saving tips. When I upgraded to an iPhone 5 I couldn't believe how short the battery life was but with a few tweets to he settings it's actually not too bad now, although an iPhone is never going to come out tops for power consumption.

I actually just received an iPhone 5c myself, as a Christmas present from my parents (thank you, mom and dad!), and I'd be interested in those power-saving tips now if you've got them handy, Mike.

Of course, having had the device for just a short time I haven't really played around with everything it can do in general - I haven't even tried Siri yet - so I'll be looking into lots of info, tips, etc. about all things iPhone-related in general in the near future, not just battery life and how to prolong it.

With an iPhone things are pretty standard meaning there aren't a lot of options. Buying phone cases are a lot easier for an iPhone than an android. I don't think you can add storage space to an iPhone so whatever you buy is all you will ever have. iPhones come with up to 64 gig of storage I believe. But those are very pricey. An iPhone 5S with 64GB without a contract could run you $749.99.

You will pay a lot more per month on the phone bill if you sign into a contract. You will pay less at first for the phone but they back charge you each month. My friend with an iPhone contract pays nearly $90 a month for his mobile phone bill.

I bought an android without a contract for around $300. I am paying only $35 per month for my mobile phone bill. I could have outright bought an iPhone for about $500 (without the contract) and paid only $30 per month.

As far as how much data to buy, I think most carriers have gone away from the old option of paying for small amounts of data in favor of unlimited plans because it is just too confusing for the average person to figure out how much they need. If you are doing a pay as you go plan you can always see how much you use and upgrade as you realize you need more.

My son has had a few versions of the iPhone and swears by them. He just bought the latest 5S with all the options which I believe includes 64gb of storage. He needs it because he is in a band and stores a lot of their music on it. It has a fingerprint id to unlock the phone - lots of bells and whistles.

If you want an unbiased review, try CNET.com and look under reviews. I use this site to research electronics I am interested in buying and have never been steered wrong

As far as a case goes, I only purchase the Otterbox Defender. My last 2 phones look brand new due to the Otterbox. In fact, I was at a concert taking video this past summer and dropped it on the floor. The phone bounced under the seats two rows in front of me. I found it when the lights went on and it was undamaged. The Otterbox Defender can be pricey but Amazon and eBay always offer low prices.

Good luck with your purchase.

Indeed. This is an excellent suggestion. I work in a factory and I have dropped my phone at-least a dozen times onto the concrete floor and the Otterbox Defender has kept it totally safe, unscratched, and unbroken. I even dropped it on rocks and stones outside at a concert and no damage. Once my belt clip took some damage (not the phone itself) and by filing out a quick online form and sending a picture of the damage they replaced the whole case and mailed it out within 2 hours. So excellent customer service from that company as well.

Some sort of case and/or screen protector is absolutely essential. I don't know how many times I see people walking around with cracked iphone screens. Sometimes you can find a small repair shop that can do it for you but it is best to get a good screen protector so you don't have it get destroyed.

My husband had a good screen protector on his phone when he dropped it in a go kart racing track. He peeled off the scratched protector and the screen was perfectly fine. I personally use the armor suit military shield ones because I like how they are a little bit easier to apply. They also don't get as oily as others.

My advice - don't. Avoid it. Go Android or Windows phone. Anything other than Apple.

I 100% disagree with this. I've had iPhones for several years and overall think they are superb. My son has an Android phone and I think it is rubbish by comparison to Apple's product.

I don't think there is a real clear answer. Some people really hate apple and how they do the operating system while others can never really get into android. It all depends on how your mind works. I know people who love both and two people who had one, hated it, switched, and love it (one went from android to iphone, the other from iphone to android). If you have a mac and like it then there is no point going android. If you are a windows kind of person, you are more likely to appreciate how android works.

But DeputyRiley said he was definitely set on getting one and had no interest in alternatives so not sure why people feel it is constructive to rain on that parade.

The one thing that temps me toward an Android over an iPhone is the customization. I love making my own ringtones and background images, but from what I've read, you can't do that on an iPhone, while you can on an Android.

My current is an LG Cosmos, a simple phone with a QWERTY sliding keyboard. It has a mini-SD card slot, on which I can load my own audio and image files. It may seem insignificant to some, but it's been a fun option that I've enjoyed over the last three years, and I would just hate to lose it by switching to an iPhone. So if I ever do upgrade to such a phone, I'll probably go for an Android just for that ability.

Wow everyone thanks, so much great advice not sure where to begin.

My provider is Verizon. In response to what a few people mentioned, do they offer a pay-as-you-go option/plan?

Also, with Verizon (or any provider?) is it basically two options -- 1) pay more for the phone up front and less monthly over time with more freedom in paying, or 2) pay less for the phone up front and pay more in a locked-in contract over time? Is that basically what it comes down to? In other words, if you do not want to sign a lengthy time contract, do they offer other payment options in as far as how much you pay, etc.? I'll most likely be sticking with Verizon.

I'm basically pretty confused about how to approach the buying the phone and selecting (or avoiding) a lengthy time contract...this seems like such a huge decision and I want to make the right one for me.

(I do appreciate the advice about other types of phones, but I will be getting an iPhone, just fyi!)
