...missing in action !

and I'm talking actual main titles, not cast lists from Imdb or other movie databases.

And, of course, narrations (Spencer Tracy in HOW THE WEST WAS OWN) or voice dubbing (Meryl Streep in ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE) don't count.

I can name only two :

Harry Carrey Jr. in RIO BRAVO

Print the legend : Harry Carrey Jr. said "Okay Howard !" instead of "Okay Mr. Hawks" and his scene didn't make the final cut (I'm not even sure it was filmed)

Leonard Nimoy in SECONDS

After his operation Rock Hudson pays a visit to his wife, and then pays a visit to his daughter (who is married to Leonard Nimoy) and Frankenheimer thought it was a redundant sequence and it didn't make the final cut.

Any other examples ?

Nimoy plays the son-in-law of banker Arthur Hamilton.
The scene in which he played was deleted during the editing process
but it remained still pictures that you found in the Blu-Ray edition from the Criterion Collection.

When CASABLANCA was first released in Germany shortly after WWII, distributors thought that the public would not want to see a story about Nazis. SO, they dubbed the film in a way that the story was suddenly about drug smuggling, and the character of Major Strasser was edited out. Conrad Veidt was still named in the credits though.

Later, of course, the film was re-dubbed, Nazi(s) intact.

Great anecdote ! Thanks !

Margueretta Scott's reappearance in the future section of THINGS TO COME is missing from all general release and reissue prints. But her name still appears in the main titles as playing two characters (Roxana and Rowena).

I have a feeling that there may well be some people credited in Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade that didn't appear in the final film, as there were some drastic changes made late on-there was a sequence at the Nazi rally which is in the novelisation but not the movie which featured a female movie director (who is credited but I don't recall her in the film).

I believe Ronald Lacey did a small cameo in this sequence (he was dying at this time) as a Nazi but also didn't make the final film (although he isn't credited).

In addition Alex Hyde-White was credited a young Henry Jones but did not appear (except possibly as a pair of hands).

Pat Roach & Frederik Jaeger were credited as Gestapo & World War 1 Ace but again their sequence from the zepellin sequence was cut-again it's in the novelisation-there was a second biplane on the zeppelin that crashed (although I think you get a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance of both of them).

Do you mean she plays at least one of the two characters or that she is not in the movie at all ?

a female movie director (who is credited but I don't recall her in the film).

She's Suzanne Roquette (!) and don't remember that character either but it's twenty years since I saw the movie for the last time, so it's a miracle I still remember Sean Connery !

He plays Himmler and may be standing near Hitler in the autographed book sequence.

Don't even remember there was a flashback in that movie !

You've got to look real quick For "Touch" (Mike) Connors in William Wellman's ISLAND IN THE SKY.
(Either Connors had a great agent to get him main title billing or his part was edited to hell and gone as he is barely visible while poor Fess Parker is very much in evidence but gets no billing whatsoever.)

Mary Linda Rapelye still gets billing in John Sturges' MAROONED even though her one scene as Gregory Peck's daughter was edited out after it's brief roadshow run back in '69.

Many sites claim this is Ronald Lacey, cameoing as Heinrich Himmer.

Those are indeed his hands. I once read that we were originally supposed to see him as young Henry, but in the end only the shot of his hands remained in the film.

The WWI ace can be seen standing in line and talking to someone when Indy approaches his dad with the tickets, and the only shot of Roach in the finished film is when Colonel Vogel is running up to the zeppelin yelling.

After such sizable roles in Raiders (two, in fact) and Temple of Doom, I really missed seeing him in Last Crusade and Crystal Skull.

Interesting about Nimoy. Thanks guys.

I thought maybe he was one of the orgy hippies in the vat, or hot tub full of grapes.

Hi, Angelillo.

Could the 2nd billing of Peter Wyngarde in THE INNOCENTS (1961) be a consideration?
Wyngarde plays Peter Quint, but we only see him (if my memory is not faulty) in a photo and as an apparition. No dialogue for Quint, either - isn't that so?
[quite the opposite of the Quint we witness in THE NIGHTCOMERS. smile]

If we leave the realm of cinema and consider television, actor Jack Raine is credited within "The Man Who Was Never Born" segment of THE OUTER LIMITS but his scene at the end with Shirley Knight was edited out of the final episode (likely due to time constraints).

James Karen - Superman Returns

Saw that piece of junk in theaters opening weekend and got real happy when I saw his name in the opening credits. He didn't appear in a single frame. His scene got cut last minute. Just one of the many, many dissapointing things about that film.

Sorry...but no : even if he's an apparition, we can see him. wink

Very good !

Well, considering the very few examples we can find in cinema movies I think it's a nice idea "to leave the realm of cinema and consider television" !

smile

But I'm pretty sure Manderley will be able to find some other examples in feature films.

That's a nice one !

By the way, was there an extended cut of that movie ?

How about a town? The 1966 western, Big Hand For A Little Lady was retitled Big Deal At Dodge City in England, & I don't think it's set in Dodge City, & Dodge City is never mentioned (I don't think).

I can name only two :

Harry Carrey Jr. in RIO BRAVO

Leonard Nimoy in SECONDS

And a third one :

Peggy Knudsen in THE BIG SLEEP (The 1945 Cut)

She plays Mona Mars, but only in the 1946 cut. Pat Clark actually plays Mona Mars in the 1945 cut.

Actually he did have one scene left in the film-the first scene on the Kent Farm where a truck pulls away and his character calls out 'Night Martha'.

Although it's an example of post-release doctoring, Clive Revill no longer appears in The Empire Strikes Back as the Voice of the Emperor, but remains credited.
