I don't believe that 1939 holds any claim to the best year for movies. However, I do love both THE WIZARD OF OZ and GONE WITH THE WIND. All the years that have come and gone, since 1939 may have produced films as good, but none better.

And Thomas Mitchell had the best cinematic year of his life appearing in five films in 1939 (if you do include Only Angels Have Wings), and winning a Best Supporting Oscar, too.
