I don't believe that 1939 holds any claim to the best year for movies. However, I do love both THE WIZARD OF OZ and GONE WITH THE WIND. All the years that have come and gone, since 1939 may have produced films as good, but none better.

GWTW strikes me as the perfect object lesson in why embroiling oneself in a large scale war is not, perhaps, a good idea. As such, it is a brilliant evocation (amongst other things), timed as it was.

My 5 favourite hollywood films of 1939, not including the obvious out-of-competition status for
Hawks' ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS, are :

DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK
GUNGA DIN
JUAREZ
MIDNIGHT
YOUNG MR. LINCOLN

And Thomas Mitchell had the best cinematic year of his life appearing in five films in 1939 (if you do include Only Angels Have Wings), and winning a Best Supporting Oscar, too.
