I know I've asked you this before, but still, any chance of releasing Jarre's score to Mandingo from Paramount, circa 1975?

I'm pretty sure I asked about it and I'm equally sure it was spoken for or the elements weren't there - can't remember.

We've been sitting on this for over a year now. I really thought it would never be releasable, other than maybe about ten minutes. But on a whim I sent it to Chris Malone, who's been doing such amazing work restoring problematic material - he began with the worst-sounding of the tracks and when I heard the result I could not believe my ears, so it was full speed ahead from that point on. He worked complete miracles.
***************************************************************************
I'm really curious about the music tracks for A PLACE IN THE SUN and why they required Chris Malone's heroic measures for release.

I have the Paramount Laser Disc (LV-5815-2) with the isolated music score. The last time that I played (long ago) it I thought that the isolated music track on the analog channel sounded OK enough. Maybe I should listen again with an ear towards a digital release?

Was it crackle removal, or click-and-pop removal, or hiss removal, or correcting ducks in the volume that was the issue? As a very patient perfectionist, this technical restoration stuff is of keen interest to me.

Ron Burbella

It's always funny to me - lots of people swear that isolated scores on lasers and DVDs and Blu-ray sound great so why can't a CD release be possible. But the fact is, some of them divorced from the laser or DVD or Blu don't sound great at all - a recent example is the isolated score to Experiment in Terror - sounds okay when you play the Blu - not great, but okay - but I had a CD burned for me right from the up and down used for the Blu and you know what - it doesn't sound okay at all - same with Lost Horizon (the musical). The sound on the laser of A Place in the Sun was wretched - anyone who has the you-know-what will know just how wretched since that's where the you know what came from. Thank heaven Paramount had saved what they could, despite the quality - there was wow to deal with, overmodulation to deal with and lots of other stuff and Chris was absolutely amazing. I've been listening to it non-stop and it's a bloody miracle. The composer's son thinks so, too.

H Bruce,

It´s posible the release of "Alias Nick Beal" (wonderful music by Waxman and fantastic film with Ray Milland)?

Thanks again

Sorry, Bruce- hate to be one of those guys who as soon as you announce something, asks for something more.

I'm really excited about the forthcoming Place in the Sun. I've always loved the on screen chemistry between Taylor and Clift. Those close-ups!

Very excited about this release. Can't wait to see what the cover looks like also.

Dear Bruce,

I think you're doing a great job with all those fantastic releases, so what I'm going to say is not meant as a criticism. In fact, it's really quite a trivial little observation...

Don't you think it would perhaps be a better idea to create new threads for each "guess what the next one is" banter? Just as an example, on this thread we've got an announcement of THE MISSOURI BREAKS release, a few "ordered" comments, then lots of speculation about what the next one will be, followed by how good A PLACE IN THE SUN will be!

So, comments on the actual MISSOURI BREAKS get lost. I'm thinking of ordering TOO LATE BLUES, but once I have it, if I spend time posting about it on the appropriate thread, it'll just be a tail-end to all the speculation about what was coming out after that, which was (if memory serves) THE MISSOURI BREAKS! Do I make any sense?

Sorry if that sounded petty. Lovin' all those Kritzy CDs!

It does make sense. I'm very sensitive about creating too many threads - I watch as it happens with others and every time I'm about to do it I just end up doing it in whatever the previous release is so as not to plaster the board with more threads, especially in lieu of all that sheet music stuff. Other labels do separate threads for the guesses (usually started by their cheerleaders) but - well - we'll see. Maybe the next one. smile

Thanks for the reply! Too many threads can be a pain, but new threads which reveal new releases and then develop into discussions about the music on that particular release are certainly not superflous, nor are speculation threads. You'll never get as many people talking about an actual score once it has been listened to than on a "guessing game" thread, but I still think it would benefit everyone, the label included, if they were separate.

Perhaps I should say that I have the old LP of THE MISSOURI BREAKS, and I always thought that it was one of John Williams' most intriguing, beguiling listens.

I see your point from a keeping-the-board-neat-looking perspective. But think of all the people who say they didn't hear about the new Kritzerland until it was too late to order it. There's a definite benefit to having the "trailer" for the next release appear at the end of the discussion for the current release.

Maintaining that "what's next" continuity is a nice service for folks who wish to keep up with Kritzerland, in lieu of a Kritzerland "subscription service," which would give me a thrill (we used to have that for FSM releases in the early days -- in fact, I believe that's where the practice of giving hints about the next release originated) but would probably be a huge pain for BK.

For people who continually say they missed stuff I'd strongly recommend getting on our eBlast list - you'll never miss any announcements that way. All it takes is dropping me an e-mail at the kritzerland address and I'll add immediately. I kind of like having the guesses at the end of the previous release's thread - it does add continuity and I'd hope it keeps the previous title alive so people can post their thoughts about that music.

same with Lost Horizon (the musical).

Has there been any breakthrough on a possible expanded "Lost Horizon" Burt Bacharach musical CD release?

Hopefully it'll happen before the Broadway musical version comes out!

I wonder if they used this on it:

Thanks for giving us the original soundtrack. Listened to it twice and have to admit I'm liking it more than the original album, which I haven't heard in twenty years.

I agree - there's just an immediacy and rawness to the original tracks, which is just missing from the very smoothed out and heavily reverbed album.

For some unknown reason? I just don't connect with John Williams music. I just finished listening to " Missouri Breaks ", and it was an hour of fatigue and boredom. There is just something missing from his music that leaves me cold. He is generally composes the type of orchestral music that I usually love, a Rozsa, Newman, Goldsmith, Waxman Korngold, etc. he is not. Despite a hundred Oscars, Golden Globes and other awards, he will never be first rate for me.

While my reaction to Williams' music is completely different (his music touches me like few others'), sometimes, RM, that's all you can say. It leaves you cold. No further explanation necessary. I'm sure there are several on this board who will gladly take that hour of fatigue and boredom off your hands.
