I got my Deluxe Edition of this in the mail today from Amazon...and holy crap...this thing is big. The unique packaging for this Deluxe Edition CD is going to cause all kinds of moaning and groaning around here just like the Star Trek Deluxe Edition one did...cause it is not going to fit on the shelf with the rest of our collections. Giving it my first listen to right now, but I am at work and can't really give it my full attention. Ugh. What ugly package. Why do all of these new 2-disc albums by Zimmer have to be some strange format? I really want them to fit on my shelf! I know, first world problems, but seriously. I think this kind of packaging is crappy and if anything, should be better quality on the Deluxe Edition. That said, I'm 4 tracks in. I quite dislike "I'm Electro", but really enjoy Spidey's fanfare in "I'm Spider-Man". Not really liking Electro's whispering, but I am not hating it either.. we'll see if my decision swings one way or the other. Not crazy for the packaging either, but so far I'm getting into the music. Was kinda wary of the voices thing, but have to admit, the "My Enemy" track is pretty damn good after 2 listens Almost done with the first CD and am really enjoying what Zimmer has done here.

I'm being pulled in two opposite directions here. On one hand, I dig the idea of making Spidey's music more "youthful" and more ambient rock with that trumpet solo. I'm not sure if it gets where it needs to go in fulfilling that idea, but it's at least *something* (which is more than one can say about Man Of Steel). On the other hand, the trumpet solo is definitely Zimmer's biggest musical swipe since ripping off Carl Orff for True Romance. And that bugs me, especially because the trumpet herald is basically one of the most famous pieces of American music in the last one hundred years. It's not even like you can say its *sort of* like Copland, because it IS Copland. But for what it is, is a good little theme for the hero, so at the very least, I can appreciate it for "surface value" That said, there is a couple of pretty good cuts on here where it's obviously Zimmer doing a Tangerine Dream thing and it sounds a lot different and more melodic than some of the other "music" on here. And on that note: as someone who spent a good number of years in the 90s listening to nothing but electronica by the likes of Paul Van Dyk and 3 Steps Ahead - I hate dubstep intensely. It's the electronic answer for the noise war we've been subjected to in album mastering: it's all effect with absolutely no concept of design or melody. I'm at a loss to think of someone who actively likes the genre who is over the age of 22 or has any taste in the first place. No offense intended, but to me it's the biggest film music mistake since the score to The Princess Bride. Ugh. And the voices. I know I'm tempting fate when I say this, but that whole whisper-rap schtick is going to be the next "wailing women" trend and we're all gonna reap some shit-ass music design because of it. I'm not saying this score is bad but it sure has be rethinking if I want to buy any new film score albums not made by John Williams. I'm happy other people like it but think this is the stop where I get off the fucking bus.
