Can someone please help me out and explain what the differences are between this release and the soundtrack expansion by Arista Records on their 1998 CD? I was under the impression that presentation was approved by John Williams and featured the score as he would like to have seen a lengthier release.
I have to confess, I still have a soft spot for the old LP assembly of the score. Very good representation.
Thanks,
Stan

One of my favourite missing cues before the Arista expansion came out was 'False Alarm'. However, I find the choral mix a bit subdued in that cue. To me the Film mix had the choral/voices sound more audible. Don't know if the alternate version was used in the Arista cd set. I am hoping this will be addressed in this new set since both cds feature different versions of 'False Alarm'

Plowing into a track list is a slog worth taking in these days of ultra-high-end score album re-masters.

The more I study this one, the more enthused I get. It's going to be a nice Christmas between the speakers (or the ear-stoppers).

Anyone who wants the original album w. disco, here it is!

Don't bother looking on Amazon.com for a cheaper price. These guys may have the last reasonably priced stockpile left.

I really think you need the old and new version, if you really love this score.

There is about 90 sec more of the score presentation, and then the disc of alternates.

The previous MCA expansions of E.T. and CE3K are within 2 min of being complete.

I can't wait to order this tomorrow, it's a great score! Earlier this year I bought the 4K blu-ray. And had the best time seeing the film in the theater with my mom.smile

Why isn't there a third disc including all of Meco's disco versions?

Until that, this can hardly be considered to be 'deluxe.' Pass.

On the other hand, you can go ahead and release those on one disc as a 'second volume' to go with Close Encounters, for like $4.99. Limited edition of 500 copies. Which will never sell out.

smile

On a serious note, this looks great. I'm on the fence and will be reading reviews with interest...

Yes, Disc 2 is a kind of alternate suite. I expect “Advance Scout Greeting” will be especially good.

I've been particularly waiting for this cue. I love it when the UFO's dance to the 5 notes.

I remember way back when the movie came out and when the UFOs responded to the tones, I just got the biggest grin on my face.... what an incredible moment! smile

ORDERED! (I haven't gotten to say that for a while now.)

Thank you so much for using the original poster art. It's simple, mysterious, and even a little frightening.

Look closely -- it's actually not the original poster art. I found the actual original road photograph in the Sony archives, the one used at the basis for the poster, and had it scanned. Jim Titus used it to make a brand new clean update of the key art with his own light and night sky.
