.....St. Patrick's Day may be appropriate, but my heart will always hear this score -- especially that heart-breaking Main Title -- as Christmas music. For Bruce to bring O. HENRY and LUCK OF THE IRISH -- and wait till you hear that one! -- into the limelight is one of the greatest early Christmas presents imaginable. Thanks again, maestro!.....

"LEPRECHAUNS AND POTS O' GOLD TO PLAY WITH: The Filming of The Luck of the Irish,"
by acclaimed author Preston Neal Jones!

Bruce, are you close to selling out Demetrius yet? It's on my must buy list but I am playing a bit of financial brinksmanship this week...

DEAR JOE CAPS --

Yes, I'm slaving away on the liner notes, and you have contributed to them with your knowledgeable insights into The Last Leaf. May I credit you as "Film Music Expert, Joe Caps"?

Yes, give me any title you ant to.
MainTitle to O Henry. don't know if it is in something earlier. It is NOT the main title to Belle Starr - that reused the love theme from Young Mr. Lincoln.

However, remember, it is Gift of the Magi that reused that infamous Newman love theme.
The only one of those films that used it, but not released on CD, is This Above All.

Oops, I meant to write Gift of the Magi, (and in fact made that correction in my text when I spotted the error on re-reading my essay-in-progress).

Please tell me if I'm reading you correctly: The theme in question originated with Newman for THE BLUE BIRD, then was re-used for THIS ABOVE ALL and the finale of LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN. Later, it reappeared in A MAN CALLED PETER.

***

I wish I had my copy of O. HENRY's DVD on hand, but it's in storage. If memory serves, that beautiful main title theme is heard only there in the credits and, slightly truncated, in the End Title. Coincidentally, I believe Newman conducted Malcolm Arnold's THE ROOTS OF HEAVEN, another score in which, alas, the extraordinarily beautiful main title theme is only heard in the main titles but not the film proper....

We'll have to put Joe and Jon Burlingame in a Jell-O wrestling ring to determine who the one and only Film Music Expert is. ;-)

Hey Bruce,

With today's technology able to bring us about wonderful restorations of scores such as Demetrius, The Egyptian, 12 Mile Reef and others, any chance of the same treatment being applied to scores such as Conrack or Paper Chase, which especially for Conrack it would be nice to see some additional cues get released. And while we're on the subject of Williams at Fox, how about the film tracks of Cinderella Liberty? Actually, that all sounds like it might make a nice set together...

Whenever there's an LP release, as in Cinderella, it's not going to be feasible. Otherwise, we're looking at many, many projects.

We have about 150 Demetrius left.

Demetrius was always a little outnumbered in the arena.

How many Gladiators are left?.....and who's winning? smile

Oo, White Feather, 23 Paces To Baker Street, From Hell To Texas, a rerelease of White Witch Doctor & a better sounding Rio Conchos, please.

Well, Intrada rereleased their Rio Conchos recording this past year so it might be wiser to wait on a reissue of the original tracks for at least another year (reverse situation with LLL/Tadlow and The Blue Max). On the other hand, 100 Rifles could use the Kritzerland treatment sound-wise a bit more urgently -- maybe with new technology the complete score in stereo can be rescued, as has happened with some other Golden Age Fox scores in the past few years. Plus there's no competing re-recording.

Hi Joe,

For some reason, all e-mails I've sent you have been sent back to me.

Please advise.

I thankfully obtained a copy of this fantastic score from Kritzerland. A perfect companion to The Robe, though it certainly stands on its own. Thanks, Bruce.

Yes it's good to have newly remastered editions of THE ROBE and DEMETRIUS from LLL and Kritzerland respectively. The sound quality on DEMETRIUS is superb.

The restored bits of "Temptation" and "The Kiss" are labelled and numbered on the CD cover, but where is the rescued bit of "Kneel to Your God"? Is it part of the other two cues?
