This is a wonderful release for fans of the film and score. So many of the extras are great that I can't put it into words- a practice I've never been very fond of before. This CD is a crowning glory for Lukas & Co. My prediction is that it'll be in my CD player long after I receive the new Intrada Goldsmith.

I received my copy of “The Wild Bunch” yesterday and had a chance to listen to about half of the film score, Disc 1, last night. The quality of the sound is stunning – every instrument placed exactly into the mix with nuance and clarity – starting with the drum snares in the main title cue which are precise, crisp, and unsettling -- the musical equivalent of a lurking, coiling rattlesnake (or scorpion). Like all of Fielding’s music, for me at least, this creates a unique psychological realm – one in which precise details coalesce into beautiful soundscapes that often shatter, shimmer, or transmute. I had not listened to this music in a couple of years – I am now convinced that this is one of the greatest of scores (just IMHO). The liner notes are indeed superb – helping to explicate the contours of the music and how it functions in the film. It seems like every CD that features music by Fielding for Peckinpah has a couple of stories that make me thank my lucky stars that I never had to interact with Peckinpah! It is astonishing to me that after hearing the first recording of the score he tried to fire Fielding. Thank God smart-Peckinpah triumphed over idiot-Peckinpah in this case. This is a wonderful final release by FSM – one that I will be returning to over and over again.

Dont we have to thank Fielding's wife!!!? Who mediated and insisted and begged her husband to fight his corner and win Sam over.

Well, according to the liner notes, we also have to thank that chair that Jerry threw at Sam! I do get the impression that Mr. Peckinpah was surrounded by a host of collaborators who did their best to see that his projects got completed in a relatively coherent fashion -- often despite Mr. Peckinpah. Idiot-Peckinpah seemed to get the upper hand a great deal of the time.
