This is an all-time dream release for me too, and the combination of these scores really works as a fantastically involving, atmospheric album. I'll admit to a little mystification too at the balance of interest of Poseidon Adventure vs. these two. Even had Poseidon not been released before, I would have been far more excited about the Michael Small scores. But I guess that's why John Williams is John Williams and Michael Small is Michael Small. I'm just happy I'm living in a world where Small's seminal works are finally seeing the light of day.

Small really got a bum deal from Paramount's refusal to release MM.
First it is a very popular, and well-known film that has achieved something close to'classic' status.
And Small's score for the film is his best work; he really had a chance to shine here and delivered.

Had this score been available since the film release, i believe he would have a higher profile.

Besides Marathon Man, Michael Small's best include Mountains of the Moon, Comes A Horseman, Black Widow and the fsm Klute. Obviously he composed for a number of different genre's. A true talent.

The Sporting Club is another excellent Michael Small score. The vinyl recording is great, I wish I had my copy in my hands in order to list a few of the musicians... Bluegrass legend David Bromberg and so many others perform. Includes a vocal sung by the composer.

In case you've never heard of David Bromberg...

Is my Marathon Man CD in transit from the USA to UK?

Is it secure?

Is it safe?

"Just tell me when they're coming!!!"

You'd like to have a nose like that full of nickels, wouldn't you? wink

My parents have a "No-R-Rated-Movies" rule, so I had never heard of these films or the composer. But I will check out the sound samples once I get home.

Bummer, dude! How old are you? I'm sorry that more parents don't see how arbitrary a litmus test "R" ratings can be when it comes to what's appropriate for young people. At 11 or 12, my parents let me watch The Godfather but not The Exorcist, which makes sense to me in retrospect. They are vastly different kinds of R rated movies.

I'm 19. But I don't care that much. Most R-rated movies aren't good by our strict standards. the only R-rated one I have seen is Air Force One, and that was because Dad thought it was PG-13.

When I was seven or eight my sister made me cover my eyes whenever the flesh puppies appeared on screen. After a few seconds I'd ask... Is it safe?

Hi Giacchino-fan,
I'm a Christian too but I do watch R rated movies. Probably because I'm a big horror fan. (I host a podcast that takes a Christian view of horror movies at www.theflicksthatchurchforgot.com) Having said that, I'm not evangelical about horror! So fair enough if R rated movies aren't your thing.

As for the CD under discussion, I am very excited about this release and have just ordered it from SAE along with The Poseidon Adventure. Yikes, I've been buying a lot of CDs lately. The good ones just keep on coming!

With all the madness of yesterday I just noticed this came out. This is an amazing release and a must buy for any self respecting score hound. I can't wait to get mine! Love that COVER!

can we please put an end to all the "is it safe' cracks?
can we?
huh?
huh?

Can we please put a stop to requests to stop saying is it safe, when only James G did it on the whole thread and one person quoted the word safe from the film. Hardly overkill.

These requests to stop saying is it safe are getting really tiresome.

Perhaps we should all start making is it safe (cracks!), then we can move the request to stop saying is it safe further to the end of the thread? It'll be safe there.

BEST. NEWS. SINCE. JEREMIAH!!!!
This is ace. Two classic Michael Small thriller scores on one CD...FSM-style smile
I'm all over this one mainly for Parallax View. That's the score and film I know the best.
I've always loved the film and the music is just spot on. I've been compensating by listening to his score to Star Chamber these past few years, which echoes PV, but the real deal will be much better. Also, that montage/folk/source cue is amazing...can't wait to blast through that.
I'm gonna watch Marathon Man again very soon, as it's been a long time since I last saw it and I don't know the score too well. It should help me gain more appreciation to Small's music.
Once again, Big Thanks to Lukas and the gang for giving us these fantastic bounties!!

I just watched it again last night to get myself pumped for CD. Such a great flick. I had forgotten how nice the piano "love music" was before it turns tragic as they are mugged in the park. The cue I'm dying to hear is the fountain meeting scene. That piece always stuck with me....

I am now going to ask the mailman "Is it safe?" every day until my package arrives.

Also, thanks to Heath for pointing out that Morton Feldman piece. I'm a big fan of this style of music, so I will be most interested in checking out your recommendation smile

Gee, I wonder what the movie quote will be on the back of the CD? wink

There's actually an abundance of memorable dialogue in the film.

"They were always so confident God was on their side. Now I think they're not so sure...."
