Nic Raine is fantastic. I put him alongside Charles Gerhardt and Erich Kunzel as a re-recording star.

Bad news for the Moonraker tapes: Stéphane Lerouge, the head Universal Jazz soundtracks in France in the collection "écoutez le cinéma", gave a long and very interesting interview for the french website UNDERSCORES (thanks Starfe ) in order to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of their 1st release. Among many things, he talks about MOONRAKER. This is what he says : " in 1992, I attended a recording session in the Studio Davout in Paris where the MOONRAKER soundtrack had been recorded. The Film had been shot and edited in France because it was a French co-production. The tapes had been stored in Davout and, some 15 years ago, Davout sent a series of letters to producers and music editors saying "Some time ago, you worked in Davout and we have a room filled with tapes. Maybe some of them belong to you. If you do not claim them within 3 months, the unclaimed tapes will be destroyed". Some composers like Vladimir Cosma or Claude Bolling, ran to Davout in order to save their tapes. And this how the Moonraker tapes disappeared : Nobody at MGM went there to get them. But did the MGM executives receive the letter frm Davout? I don't know. Because in the midtime, UA had closed their offices in Paris and their catalogue had been tranfered to MGM. This how Moonraker remains one of Barry's last Holy Graal, but still an unreachable Graal. The only thing we ca hope for, is a re-recording." Well, so the recording studio doesn't have the tapes. OK. Well, maybe someone claimed them, like MGM/UA or Eon. One possibility not yet ruled out. Maybe Barry himself claimed them. Maybe Barry has a dupe copy of his own. There are still possibilities. I'm just not holding my breath. Incidentally, has anyone talked to the people who created the 5.1 mix for special edition DVDs? That might shed more light on whether there are any music materials held by the studio at all. Just might. Cheers

At least that is confirmation about the status of Davout’s tape library. Anything else is pure speculation. The CTS Bayswater tapes for THUNDERBALL through to DAF were thankfully saved and ended up at Abbey Road’s vault. Part of THUNDERBALL was in the custody of EMI/Capitol in the US. The fate of the CTS Wembley recordings for TMWTGG, TSWLM and FYEO through to LTK is, again, down to speculation. At least great sounding expanded versions of FYEO and TLD saw the light of day on Ryko. On the positive front, things do turn up in inventories. Richard Moore found the original session tape of Matt Monro’s FRWL vocal recently and implied that most of JB’s score was also discovered. When I discussed the fate of the music tracks with the team that did the 5.1 mixes for the DVD a few years ago it was stated that all the pre-THUNDERBALL music tracks were long gone. Didn't ask about MOONRAKER though! Whilst I’d love to hear those extra few minutes from MOONRAKER, I am very impressed with the re-recordings made by gkgyver: http://www.youtube.com/user/gkgyver Cheers Chris

Maybe Barry himself claimed them. Maybe Barry has a dupe copy of his own. Stéphane Lerouge has already asked the question to John Barry and unfortunately, the answer is no.

This apparent fiasco, not the first of its kind, shows the folly of leaving your tapes at the recording studio. It's worse than a gym membership. Movie studios ought to store a film's music with its other elements, at a secure facility like Iron Mountain.

Before this gets any more out of hand - Moonraker is not lost. It's just not top priority for anyone. Perhaps in 2012... Unmixed multi-track tapes, film mixes, dubbing stems or something else? Are you able to elucidate Cat? I also wonder about the DR NO underscore as heard in the film, actually. But that is an aside, I suppose.

Like the film version of the main title, which I love! (But which can be extracted with perfect satisfaction from the film itself, as there are no dialogue or effects interfering with it.) Cheers

Well, the fate of TMWTGG is known: it has been used for the DVD re-mix. So, where are they and who has them? At least we know that MGM has them somewhere on HD/DAT. The fate of the pre-Thunderball scores and TSWLM, MR, OP and AVTAK remains a mystery by comparison. Who knows whether the DVD producers considered it unnecessary to re-mix the soundtracks from TSWLM onwards because there were already multi channel mixes available - or because the tapes were missing...
