I'm pretty sure they had to clear When You Wish Upon a Star just to use the Pinocchio music box in Dreyfuss' introductory scene in the '77 theatrical.

That is true, and the '77 intro was a reshoot done in LA. The music box was included in it solely to motivate Ronnie's line of dialogue calling Roy "Jiminy Cricket" because the whole conversation about going to see Pinocchio was cut.

The later shot of the music box was also an insert, and this is what necessitated Williams recording some cartoon music ("Lava Flow") to fill in the hole in the Duck Dodgers bit because the deal with WB did not allow them to further extend the length of the cartoon usage.

It appears from the La-La Land edition track list that some of the 1977 album edits of certain tracks have been recreated for the new edition on disc 2...but not all of them.

I asked Mr. Matessino whether my Audio Fidelity SACD re-master of the complete '77 album (plus disco!) would be made obsolete, and he replied, with some qualification, that it would not be.

So it may be that, outside the reconstituted original album tracks, the '77 album may now become a relic.

I can live with that.

The best way to make sense out of the assembly is to not study it on paper. Just listen to the music when you get it, let it work on you like the UFO blasting Roy with light.

You mean listen to music on a CD? What are we, animals?

Looking forward to this... it should go great with the new UHD Blu-Ray that came out not long ago.

Still curious that the back cover of the LP doesn't include a copyright notice or "used with permission" notation.

I only have the previous 26 track "collector's edition". Is there anything on that set that isn't present on this new one from LLL ?

It was a different time, and a low point in the life of the Disney company. You couldn't even do it now at all, no matter how much you paid. Same for how Dumbo was used in 1941 or Snow White in Gremlins, with characters actually watching Disney movies in cinemas. It would be impossible to do in any other studio's film.

Incidentally, the reason that the two quotes of "When You Wish" were part of one long 12-1/2 minute track in 1998 was so that only one mechanical royalty had to be paid to Bourne Music. I said in my JWFan interview about E.T. that the rate is now higher for tracks exceeding 10 minutes, and that was an issue here as well. We were better off separating the tracks this time, especially since we have alternate versions of "Contact" and the End credits as well as the "Inside" cue, which has yet another quote of "When You Wish."

All of that content is included and, in fact, you can basically recreate that program with the new release if you have a mind to, but I feel very good about the new presentation as a listening experience as well as in how it gives listeners maximum ability to experiment and personalize. You can even sort of recreate a slightly expanded OST, albeit without the disco track, which Williams didn't really consider to be part of it in the first place.

Thanks for the reply. So long as the music's all there, I can happily retire my "collectors edition" to the charity shop smile
Not worried about recreating the album or chronological order, I prefer a good listening experience, and this set looks terrific.
Going be torn when it arrives whether to listen to this, Titanic, or Die Another Day first.....

I have the Collector's Edition CD, and despite not knowing fully what the contents on the LLL release, would have kept it anyway simply because the packaging was beautiful, with that shining cover and digipak, the latter of which IMO is much better than those infernal jewel cases.

Cool receiving answers from the experts in the field. Thanks. smile

I don't know anyone in the film music industry, either directly or indirectly but this is an observation: Mike Matessino appears to be one of the nicest guys out there. I say this because of the way he personally and patiently answers all of the questions. It also stems from an email encounter I had with Mike some years ago when he and Lukas (another great guy) helped me connect with a piece of music for a family member. I just wanted to put this out there.

I hope that when he'll get his CD, Jason will be so kind and will made his usual list, where he compare each existing version of CE3K smile

This is nice to hear, thank you. I can certainly get into very crabby moods like anyone else, but it's far more productive to be civil and helpful and make people feel good for having had contact with you. There are many in the industry who seem to behave in the opposite way.

You are very welcome Mike. I can only speak for what I see and have experienced. You fall on the good side of humanity.

You both fall on the good side of humanity! And I'm proud to call you guys friends. BTW, Mike, I love the isolated BABY BOOM score on the Blu-ray, it sounds great. And you have worked on almost all my favorite cds. Thanks again!

AND.....your listening prowess.
Thanks to these very notes, I was started on a path to investigate & subsequently fall in love with the music of Russian composers. Go figure....
Dyno releases LLL, looking forward to hearing them all.
-Sean

I’ve always wondered exactly which “underrated Russian composers” Steven was referring to...
