Was it a Varese release, Bruce?

Actually, both of those great Goldsmith westerns are over fourteen years old - depends what you mean by "gone" I suppose smile

Well when you said long OOP I thought you meant that many years since they sold out, not since they were released...

He did say it's been oop for about thirteen years.
Does Haineshisway now wish to adjust his clew?

I actually don't know when it went out of print. It is a former FSM release and it is incredible for various reasons. smile

The lllustrated Man?...

Nope. The title has been mentioned, but this new version will, I think, be very pleasing to all Goldsmith fans.

I think the FSM Goldsmith western most in need of audio improvement (if possible) is 100 Rifles. Who knows, maybe as has been the case with some other Fox scores in recent years, the complete stereo score (or at least most of it) can now be salvaged. On the other hand, I think it was the last to go OOP.

Rio Conchos would be wonderful but I think Bruce would wait a year or two longer on that since Intrada recently reissued their amazing re-recording. (This is why I think a reissue of Jerry's own QB VII rerecording will also be a while in coming because of the wonderful Tadlow/Prometheus complete rerecording...although in the case of Rio Conchos the newer recording is less complete so I may be wrong)

Take A Hard Ride sold out first, in part because packaging parts were lost so less than the usual 3000 copies were actually available from FSM. It's a great score, and though I'm very happy with my FSM version, if Bruce has particularly improved the sound or uncovered some extra alternates to include or something, I'm in for the new version!

The lllustrated Man?...

That's Warner Bros...and since the demise of FSM Warner Bros. titles haven't been as readily forthcoming from any of the other labels. LLL and Intrada have done a small handful each, but I don't believe Bruce has gotten in there at all (yet, anyway).

It would be great if stereo elements were found for the complete Rio Conchos score. I love the Intrada recording, but there's always room for the original.

Take a Hard Ride would be great as well as I never got the FSM release.

That's correct. Anyway Bruce answered, it's not this one.

Given what studios Bruce has access to, and what sold out FSM Goldsmith titles have NOT yet been reissued by either LLL or Intrada (ie. Patton, Stagecoach, Tora! Tora! Tora!) it simply HAS to be either Rio Conchos or Take a Hard Ride. As I said 100 Rifles is the most in need of a sound upgrade but it sold out the most recently (only in the past year or so, I think).

The ONLY other thing there's a VERY outside chance of is The Flim-Flam Man and/or A Girl Named Sooner, but that sold out not that much longer ago than 100 Rifles. Still, it'd be great to get a reissue of those with improved sound and an actual cover for A Girl Named Sooner this time...

I hope you're right about "Take a Hard Ride" because I so much want to get my hands on it - it's the only gap (that I really care to fill, that is) in my JG discography. But after a fellow FSMer guessed TaHR a few posts back Bruce went on without dancing a jig, you know, so it's probably not the one...

Except Bruce did say the title had been mentioned so the only reason he's not dancing a jig is because he's in a particularly playful mood I guess...

Whatever score it is, I'm hoping Bruce clues us in soon to what improvements have been made over the previous issue. This title was delayed for a very long while from when he first mentioned it, I presume because he was holding out for better elements or something (or perhaps the available elements just required a lot of extra work?)

I hope it's Take A Hard Ride, as I have Rio Conchos (& love it), & like Yavar, much prefer it to the re-recording.

Well, let's just say if it was Rio Conchos, which was released in monophonic sound with only a handful of the usable stereo cues included as a bonus, and let's just say that Mike Matessino went back to the original elements and, thanks to today's technology, did a stereo restoration that sounded absolutely amazing, with only three cues in mono and those cues rendered so seamlessly that you won't even know they're there I'd say that was cause for dancing of a jig and a pretty major one at that. If you have the FSM version, you don't have it. After hearing the master yesterday I was absolutely blown away by what Mr. Matessino delivered. It's a classic Goldsmith score finally sounding as it should. Definitive and the only one you need.

WOW! I'm glad the Intrada reissue of their own recording did not rule this one out for a while as I'd feared!

As it happens I actually prefer the Intrada recording (the ONLY time Goldsmith re-recorded a score of his that turned out great, IMO) for the highlights of the score, ie. Wall of Fire is just DYNAMITE! That said, I feel the Intrada rerecording kinda peters out, with the more low-key second half not really holding up to the awesome first half.

Strangely enough, though similarly chronological, I feel the FSM original tracks flowed better as a more consistent complete listen. I don't think it was just the missing music added back in, but something about the original performance made the darker second half of the score flow more naturally from the more forthright thematic first half other score. So if you really want to appreciate the composition as a whole the original recording is the ONLY way to go.

So I am SUPER EXCITED to hear what Mr. Mattessino has come up with for this one -- thanks Bruce!

And hopefully Bruce or the fine folks at LLL or Intrada will get around to facelifts for 100 Rifles and Take a Hard Ride too, some day.

Rio Conchos, the easiest double-dip I've ever made. I've listened to it regularly since I bought it, & have posted here before, that it would be great if a re-master with more stereo was released. And one of my favourite western main titles. Great movie too, I bought the four western film Blu-ray set just to get this movie. And Lonely Indian, one of my favourite Goldsmith cues.

This fine score is well worth the upgrade. I much prefer the original to the re-recording, apart from the the obvious sound deficiencies.
I'll look forward to the improved disc.
How far do we have to look forward? Will it be released very soon?
