One other thing. Wouldn't this announcement be the release of Deep Space Nine? La-La Land hasn't officially announced anything official yet, but there's been lots of talk about it in both these forums.

That would hardly qualify as "one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, soundtrack announcements of our 10 years in business." Plus, we already know of the DS9 set, this sounds like something new and much bigger.

One would think it has to be something Star trek related anything else would not make sense.

But anything is possible.

This is a Star Trek event is it not? It's a panel talking about Star Trek music.
Why would it be a Bond announcement? Or The Ten Commandments? Or Die Hard 2?

I hope you're right and it's Trek related; I was only kidding about Ten Commandments.

So... there are 30-some TOS episodes with original score material included, right? And you could probably fit 3 episodes per CD if the old GNP releases are any indicator (they each held 2 but they were not packed out). Maybe a... what, 13, 14 disc set?

Biggest news would be unfettered access to Lucasfilms/Lucasarts music archives, and the Trek convention would be the perfect place to announce it.

Think of all the glorious stuff they could release.

Almost certainly: "Star Trek" (the original). Nothing else makes sense.

That, combined with "biggest," means…

Certainly: A very expensive proposition.

Let me go on record as being the first to say they should have done it a different way. I can't commit to what that different way is until I find out how they actually did it. (It's not easy being contrary without all the facts.)

On the old GNP releases, is that original music or re-recorded? And if it's original, I thought GNP didn't license their music out? (Hence, some Ron Jones material having to be left off the FSM set.)

While I'm still secretly hoping for a massive, DS9 complete series set with all the music for every episode packaged in an authentic replica of a Bajoran Orb Ark, I will remain perfectly content and be excited for this release if it is something for the original series as well. (After all, there is a DS9 set on the horizon anyways!)

Why on Endor would a STAR TREK convention be the perfect place to announce a deal with Lucasfilm? That's like saying a DOCTOR WHO convention would be the perfect place to announce a QUANTUM LEAP boxset!

I think I beat you to the punch Schiffy. I suggested they should release the set as suites and got rewarded with the Spock glare of doom.

Chris.

Partly sarcasm, partly just riffing on the Star Wars vs Star Trek rivalry that raged in the 80's & early 90's. I know it wouldn't be the perfect place to announce it.

...a QUANTUM LEAP boxset!

OMGs I want this now! I love QUANTUM LEAP even if Al's "Alphabet Rap" song hasn't aged the best!

But as we've seen again and again, when it comes to these things, there is no one true answer forever. In the case of the FSM Jones set, what was true for "Best of Both Worlds" was not true for "Heart of Glory." Why? I haven't a clue. Maybe GNP was willing to license one but not the other. Maybe their rights for one were not the same as their rights for the other. The point is, we don't know where GNP's rights to these things begin and end.

And by the way, people have changes of heart. And times change. And money talks. Assuming the big announcement is "Star Trek" (the original series), which I'm assuming it is, we may never know why things changed. Just that they did.

For those who asked: why STAR TREK convention be the perfect place to announce something else?

Let's think about most simple answer - maybe there is no plans for big convention (like this ST or Comic-Con) where it would be possible to declare something global. And 'cause this will be BIGGEST release, so LLL doesn't want declare about it in common forms (announcement her & from e-mail).

But I really hope that this will be Star Trek - related release. After that I can quietly say 'pass' - you see that Trek's score, movie & series is not very known in Russia (in generally) and for me (in particular), so I can save money for something more known for me! wink

The Crescendo releases are the original recordings.

If you look at the Best of Both Worlds CD versus the first release of Heart of Glory, I think the reasoning is fairly obvious. The Best of Both Worlds album had the cues separated into different tracks, which is how they would have been (more or less) in the Ron Jones set. However, Heart of Glory was condensed into two tracks. Since the box presented the cues differently this is probably what allowed that score to be included and not Best of Both Worlds. Different track presentation does not equal re-release of the original album. At least, that was the first thing that occurred to me. I know there was another incident where this happened (which is why I thought of this when the tracklist was announced) but I can't remember what it was. Maybe someone can lend me a helping hand.

Probably less. The Ron Jones set has 40 scores on 14 discs. TOS is 34, including the pilots.

So I'd guess no more than 12 discs, even with extras. Perhaps a four-disc case per season?

Well, true -- "forever" can be a relative and nebulous term. And I didn't realize that "Heart of Glory" had been released by GNP to begin with; I only knew about the missing "Best of Both Worlds" because it was an issue that was addressed when the set was released. Also, when all of the Trek film scores were being re-released, many comments alluded to GNP having perpetual rights, etc. (Or is that Varese?) Either way, I get that money talks and things can always change, I was just curious if anyone had more specific information about it.

Could also be some kind of co-production, maybe. Or "in association with" or "courtesy of" or the like.
