The book was excellent and the trailer looks very inviting. Of course I am looking forward to the score as well. This Variety article mentions it briefly:

http://if.com.au/2013/10/06/article/Kudos-for-The-Book-Thief/WYRESNSMOZ.html

The cut we saw tonight isn’t the final mix, and I hope they tone down a few of the big-swell John Williams music moments, but that’s about the only flaw.

Let's just hope that Williams will deliver an intimate, chamber-textured score for this - and not schmaltz it up as he did in Schindler's List (a fine score off the screen - on screen, not so much).

As in the Schindler case, I think Kilar would have been a great choice for this.

Im sure you'll mention it to Mr. Spielberg if you bump into him and how the score that got an oscar for his OSCAR-WINNING Film was wrong and how you know so much better then he does about the kind of score he should have had for that film..

I'd love to hear that chat..

:-)

Here we go again - an interesting thread deteriorates into a back and forth consisting of snarky insults. Can someone explain to me why this happens and what it accomplishes? I am growing weary of it. If this is all you can contribute to a thread, maybe you should look inward and see why you are so miserable.

Because other people have opinions, and Ford has facts.

Blah,Blah,Blah....

The original poster's comments were pretty snaky to start with.

But I'm sure you didn't notice that.

Oh well

Not in this case, I just expressed MY OPINION (Which some folks just can't handle)

But I'd pay good money to see this person have a chance to say that to say this to Steven Spielberg..

I'm sure it would be a very "Annie Hall" Moment.....

(If you don't get the joke, WATCH THE MOVIE)

Let's just be honest:

You are free to like or dislike the score for "Schindler's List."

However, when you state categorically that it is "schmaltzy" and dismiss its effectiveness in the movie with the cutesy "not so much" -- and then fail to cite anything to back up your opinion -- you are flaunting your feigned superiority.

OnlyGoodMusic is not stupid. He knows this score is beloved around here, and it's that rare score that's admired outside our tiny niche. He knows the film was widely praised and that it and the score won Oscars. And yet, he chooses to speak his opinion taking as a given that he knows better. He's baiting people. That's just the fact.

I agree with you completely. I have stated quite often here that Schindler's List is my favorite score. I just know that there is a point at which the member becomes the target rather than the comment. When that point is reached, things go downhill fast. It took a mere moment for me to become the target of a snarky, condescending response did it not? Opinion is the point whether we agree or not. Baiting and insults should be ignored and not perpetuated.

At this point we could cue the violins to start playing the 'Pity Me" music....

:-)

There are vastly more important things to get upset about then my comments in the world.

OK... let's focus on more important stuff than this bullshit.

Has anyone actually heard anything about the score release? It's about a month from release and nothing has been announced yet... does any poster or trailers mention anything about the label releasing the score? I suppose it will be on some major label like Sony or something like that but it would have been nice to have an official announcement.

No kidding. Will the pointless bickering in this part of the film music world ever end?

Anyway, I can't wait to hear this score!

You are right. I fell into the crap trap I hate and I apologize for doing so.

If anyone has not read the book, I would highly recommend it. It is labeled as a young adult's book. I bought it for my daughter some years back and read it myself. Wonderful read.

The film was screened at the Mill Valley Film Festival and Variety has its review up:

http://variety.com/2013/film/reviews/the-book-thief-review-1200694271/

"Impeccable design contributions are highlighted by Florian Ballhaus’ somber but handsome widescreen lensing, and an excellent score by John Williams that reps his first feature work for a director other than Steven Spielberg in years."

Yeah, we covered that before this thread turned into an anti-Semitic shitshow. I just wanted to write that.

I have no comments on this topic other than a new John Williams score is always welcome.
