I'm looking forward to this release. The movie is a guilty pleasure. I wish someday we'd get a better quality Blu-ray than what is offered on the DVD.
My brother gave me the LP for Christmas many years ago, and both it, the music and the movie bring back fond memories.

Diana Rigg is my favorite thing about this movie and to finally have the complete version of this song (the first half wasn't on the original LP) is worth the price of the CD alone.

Unfortunately the sound/video/editing quality of YouTube video isn't the best:

A Little Night Music will be released exclusively for purchase via MasterworksBroadway.com on August 13 in a limited quantity of Manufacture-On-Demand CDs as well as digital download. The CD will be available through Arkiv Music on September 10, plus downloads through digital service providers the same day.

Should I read this wording to mean that both the MasterworksBroadway.com and the Arkiv Music CDs with be of the made-on-demand variety? Regardless, I'll probably get it if the price is right.

A Blu-ray would be nice, although the DVDTalk review of the DVD stated that "rumors suggest the original negatives have long been destroyed." I've avoided the DVD, since descriptions of the picture quality didn't sound any better than my laserdisc.

Looking forward to this...

and what an irritating tagline on the Laserdisc: "The 'Send in the Clowns' Musical"...

Just got my CD and it looks great and has a lot of liner notes.

But do take note that the bonus tracks are direct lifts off the mono soundtrack with effects, etc. and not of the best quality. Still, nice to have them than not.

The sound is great..the bonus tracks are lifted from the film its self-but it does contain one previously unreleased instrumental..from the stereo tapes..yes..bring on THE FANTASTICKS-the original cut was better than the Coppola cut..i do have the movie posters for The Fantasticks..smile

Would any kind member be able to help me out with this? i've never really liked many musicals but for some weird reason I always loved this one. I think its due to Diana Rigg. Unfortunately living in the UK I can't order this cd as they only ship to America. Anyone with a Paypal account willing to work something out for me?

As I recall, Kritzerland embarked upon releasing this score, but backed off when it was discovered that one (or both?) of the songwriting team was against it.

That's too bad. I thought the treatment of the score was one of the things the movie got right.

Both of the songwriters were against the release, and since they're both friends of mine I scotched it. But it would be very difficult for anyone to attempt any release of the film score against the wishes of the songwriters - they are the only ones who actually a copy of the songs that have the correctly comped vocals - having looked at all the multitrack tapes and how many takes there were of everything, it would be a real nightmare trying to figure all of that out.

What were their reasons?

I have mixed feelings. We're getting offered cd-r's. woo hoo frown.

I don't know. Would I rather have a CD-R from the master tapes, or a Harkit-like pressed CD from an LP rip?

In the cd-releasing-universe, these are not the only choices.

Songwriters? Has Stephen Sondheim become two people?

On what might have been... the best director for this film would have been Stanley Donen, with Audrey Hepburn as Desiree.

Finally bought the download. It is so good to hear the soundtrack album after so many years (I had the LP a long, long time ago). Len Cariou is fantastic.... and Diana Rigg is sublime. As someone else commented above, the bonus tracks are a disappointment, but the original album is a treat.

I just found this clip of the opening number on Youtube with Elizabeth Taylor's undubbed vocals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDtZXtKuQ5c
