Looking at all of the music in the series, I'm tickled pink about Elaan of Troiyous (however it's spelled) and The Enterprise Incident. How on earth do you go about getting all of this catalogued, edited, researched etc.? This sounds like a staggering amount of work here.

I'm actually curious as to how it'll be laid out, as in whether it's generally ordered by production order, episode order etc.? Opening and Closing Credits on their own CD with alternates? How are Library cues ordered? The organizational side of this, deciding what goes on what CD, also sounds like a nightmare.

With this much material, organizing everything by airdate order (and perhaps divided by season) would seem best. Alternates/unused music programmed to follow the scores, library cues at the end of each season. Extras, like the recent re-record of the theme, last.

If it were I, I'd stick pretty strictly to recording date order. The good news is, if you happen not to like the order LLL comes up with, there's this thing called a CD drive.

We have Lincoln's music--several versions in fact. And it's not composed by Fred Steiner. Thanks for clarifying that, Jeff. The next question would be: Who DID compose it, then? Is it some kind of "source" music, which existed before? (I'm sure it will be addressed in the CD box, but I'm curious...). On another note, if the credits say "additional music by...", as in "Savage Curtain", does it mean "new music composed explicitly for this episode", or "tracked music from earlier episodes", or possibly, a mixture of both? I would assume that the credits are not always consistent in that regard, right? For example, in "The Alternative Factor", the credits say "music composed and conducted by Alexander Courage", suggesting a new score, while it apparently contains only tracked music (including that unused cue, "Romulan Agitato" from "Balance of Terror" by Fred Steiner, as you pointed out). In other episode credits, you just find "Theme composed by Alexander Courage", and then, later on, the name of the music editors, indicating fully tracked episodes. I will have to re-read your book again, maybe some of my questions will be answered! (Fantastic book, by the way!)

From what I understand, there's a music credit on tracked episodes when cues from a specific composer are used for the majority. So if say 60% of music is Fred Steiner's, and the rest are scattered bits by others, Steiner gets a credit. If there are a couple of new cues among the library music (like in City on the Egde of Forever), a composer would get an "additional music by" credit. Unless I misunderstood. Always a possibility.

Sounds reasonable to me. Theoretically, there could be up to 8 different composers for tracked cues - that surely would be an overkill credit! So, that would mean, the "additional music by Fred Steiner" credit in "Savage Curtain" would indicate new music for that episode. Jeff, we need your expertise! Is there new music, and when, where exactly? And could you indicate in what scene the cue "Romulan Agitato" was tracked in "The Alternative Factor"? (Yes, I could watch the episode again, but I'm too lazy right now! Besides, that's a horrific episode! If the cue was, say, in "City", that would be completely different! Sorry if I bother you with all those silly questions, Jeff, but I LOVE all those trek music mysteries!

That would be the scene when Lazarus causes the fire in engineering so he can steal the crystals. You can't hear it all that well, though. I'd like to hear that bit of music in Space Seed when Kirk is smashing the glass on Khan's freezing unit. I think it's another Balance of Terror outtake, the theme is unmistakable. It wasn't used in any other episode.

I'm not gonna say who wrote the Lincoln music--but there are at least two very unsung personalities who made very important contributions to Star Trek's music who will get their due in the booklet. As for the music credits on the series, they are frequently VERY misleading--the formula referenced above WAS used, but not always in a way that makes sense. Mr. Bond, Were these original contributions, or just stock music tracked in?
