Yes, the video program and the isolated soundtrack are two different things, but in general the actual video program is usually worth more than the music. It still doesn’t make sense to me that the video containing the actors performances, special effects, audio, etc. is less expensive than the isolated music.

The cost of producing the video program probably isn't cheaper than producing the soundtrack program.

The difference is that the cost of the video program is recouped over 100,000+ units and the cost of the soundtrack program is recouped over 6,000 units.

Which has been said about ten times now if anyone actually reads these posts before venting.

Cheers

I don't look in for a few days, and here is about 40 pages or so of people bellyaching about the price. What a shock.

The price is more than reasonable for a 15 disc set plus "book"; we usually spend $20 for 1 disc, so $300 + (for "book) would be expected price, Jeff said $200 neighborhood & $225 should be no surprise to anyone save it's less than expected (price for 6000 units is higher than 100,000, but if Paramount released this set wide, it would not be as good& it would cost the same or more).

Wow. Cha-ching!$$$ You can get Star Trek: The Original Series - Seasons 1-3 [Blu-ray] for $167 (Run Time: 4120 minutes). So $225 for the score only seems a pretty penny. But I guess La-La Land has to keep the lights on.

Until recently, The Next Generation DVD sets were upwards of $100 per season, despite all seven of them being released in 2002 - ten years ago! It seems they're now, finally, going down in price as the series is re-released on Blu-ray (though some are still about $50 on Amazon as of now).

Cha-ching indeed.

Given the limited edition nature of this release and the fact that this will bring tons of smiles to my face, the price is way reasonable. Looking so forward to this! Thanx again, all who have labored to bring this about.

It still doesn’t make sense to me that the video containing the actors performances, special effects, audio, etc. is less expensive than the isolated music.

You're thinking about it the wrong way. It's not like ordering a hamburger -- if you get cheese, that's more, add bacon and it's still more, plus additional for fries and a shake. There, you're paying for the cumulative costs of the physical components that go into your meal, so you'd be right to expect it would be less expensive to just get an isolated bun.

But it's simply not the same here. Costs are high, the market is finite. (Just because "Star Trek" is an enduring franchise, that doesn't mean that there are hundreds or even tens of thousands of people who want the music on its own.) They've got to charge more for it than it costs them to license, produce, and manufacture or else they've just developed an elaborate way to lose money. No way around that that I can see.

Please keep something in mind -- in order to license this project 2 companies had to paid, not one, but two...not too mention lawyers, publishing fees, producers, engineeers, SAG, AFM, actors, etc. . . The cost of this project could have bought me a nice home in Santa Barbara...or at least a near mint copy of Detective Comics #27 lol

Don't worry, you'll be able to get that home after this is released! I hope I can scrounge enough cash together for a copy. It looks... fascinating. wink

For the people whining, did you think it was going to be $15? The price was forecasted at between $200 and $300. If this is something you've wanted for as long as I have, then this very understandable price shouldn't deter you. The fact that this music gets to see the light of day on CD is a testament to the devotion of those working behind the scenes on the project as well as the wonderful possibilities of this film score renaissance now taken for granted by the whiners who only a couple of years back would have thought this release to be a mere pipe dream.

Considering that we're getting 15 CDS OF MUSIC AND A 100 PAGE BOOK, this is completely reasonable. If you haven't got anything to say beyond complaining, please leave. You give our kind a bad name.

It is. We hope to have 2 other releases that day as well, but as for right now we are firing full photon torpedoes at this massive Trek endeavor. wink

This would be accurate for me if it was Fringe.

$224.98 = 225 travel-size bottles of shampoo = 56 McDonald's Big Macs = 17 hours of music from Star Trek: The Original Series plus a 100-page book = 10 orders of baby back ribs at Outback Steakhouse = 1 citation for unlawful parking in a disabled space in California

Choose wisely.

Ohh. I do need a new hat but I think my wife would rather I had the CDs than a rabbit fur hat.
