Well, that's greeeeaaat news for Basil's fans, and they are many. But I think I'm going to have a little party for the upcoming MAN WITH X-RAY EYES and that bit of TALES OF TERROR! I'm so excited I started a thread on it hours ago, but nobody joined me. I'm going back there now to party on my own. But don't let me stop you Poledouris fans having YOUR little orgy!

Wow, especially excited for BREAKDOWN. And more prime-era Baxter too!

I interviewed Richard Marvin about ten years ago for FSM, about the scoring of U-571. BREAKDOWN was and still is a big favorite of mine and I definitely went for the chance to ask him about it. I can't find the interview at this particular moment to verify this (it's somewhere in the FSM print archives), but he did mention that he'd rescored several scenes including the bank sequence, which I've always thought was particularly well-done; the score really sells the tension.

I also remember reading an interview with Jonathan Mostow somewhere (aggravatingly, I can't remember where; I want to say it was an article in The Guardian about film music) where he essentially took credit for creating the percussive opening cue, by taking what had been written by his composer and stripping away basically everything but the rhythm track.

It's interesting to note that the first big chase cue is a very, VERY close cousin of Marc Shaiman's "Go to Your Room" cue from MISERY.

LLL's package sounds like yet another dream come true for me. Had no idea that Eric Colvin, Steve Forman, and Judd Miller were involved as well. Looking forward to Mr. Bond's analysis.

...or should I say... his BREAKDOWN breakdown?

What other Poledouris scores is Breakdown similar to? I am not familiar with it at all.

I'm curious too. But considering the praise and that no one has said that it's not worth three CDs....this sounds likely to be right up my alley.

I will definitely buy this, that`s for sure. However I unfortunately have to wait about ten days or so after it`s release to make my order (if it is still not sold out by then).

I have to say, as much as I enjoy Breakdown and have seen it many times, the score has never stood out to me. Not saying it was bad, just that it's not one that exactly stands out, but instead just "quietly" supports the on-screen events without drawing attention to itself. So as a result, I couldn't even begin to describe the score or make a comparison, as I never remember it by the time the movie's over.

Looks like an interesting release, though. I knew Poledouris had done two separate scores, but I had no idea there was still enough material for a third disc. Wow.

It is a good score but a unique on from Poledouris. Not Conan, not Red October. Lots of electronics as I recall but, not like No Man's Land either. It has some big muscular moments but lots of quiet intensity... hmmm need to watch this again tonight and get familiar with the score again

I love Poledouris! I haven't seen the movie in years and remember it wasn't the typical stuff from him... not to say Basil was ever "typical". I can't wait for the samples.

Thank you La-La-Land!

Wow, two Baxter's in one week! If anyone would have told me this three years ago, I would have called him nuts.

And what a stunning cover for "X"!

Poledouris first attempt - the original, original score - will go down VERY well with the folks here. Its big and bold and traditional. The other versions, maybe so-so.

I hear you. If anyone would have told me before we announced ours that there would be another Baxter coming a day later, well, I would have called him - smile

Dudes. I spent a long, long time restoring the rejected score back into Breakdown (sadly, now taken off Youtube) and I really dig the rejected score. There are a number of standout cues - and the finale is super-duper.

I'm very excited about this one.

Even Poledouris' original Main title works better imo than what was eventually settled on.
The final score sounds more like the uneasy ambient sound design you'd expect to hear in current horror thrillers.

Yes. The "final score" (aka disc 1) - it's like somebody took a classic Poledouris score and then stripped it down, and down, and down until the barest ideas were left, but the "pow" factor was lost. It fundimentally got changed from being a kick-ass action score to being a very synth-sounding suspense score. Not bad as suspense scores go, but what you'll hear on disc 2 will blow you away!
