* I feel absolutely no connection to the following Goldsmith scores: Legend, Hoosiers, Patton or Star Trek: The Motion Picture. This isn't to say they're bad, just that they've never done it for me.

* With some exceptions, I don't feel much towards the music of Alex North or Elmer Bernstein. Scores like 2001, Marie Ward, Spartacus, Slipstream and The Man With The Golden Arm are exceptions but by-and-large I cannot figure out why I don't like them more.

* I think the greatest threat to filmscore isn't Hans Zimmer, isn't James Horner, isn't BSX or any other number of boogy men - but the fans themselves.

* I like the music on disc but find Bear McCreary's music in BSG to be some of the most cloying, horrible uses of music ever written for television.

Ha, ha...I love threads such as these. For some reason, everyone gets 'carte blanche' to say what they want, whereas if they had said the same thing - in the relevant thread - they'd be lynched in typical FSM fashion. Odd, but true.

"It's twoo, it's twoo, it's twoo, it's twoo!!"

Yes; sad but true........but sad........but true......but sad.

  • I don't get all the Ennio Morricone idolatry. There's a couple of his scores I like but everything else -- eh....

  • Lawrence of Arabia is the most overrated film score ever written.

  • 70s and 80s synth composer/performers like John Carpenter, Giorgio Moroder and Harold Faltermeyer kick ass. Period. It's a scientifically proven fact. Live with it. wink

  • John Barry quit the movies at the perfect time. His stuff was getting rrrrreaaaaallly repetitive.

  • Jerry Goldsmith could do no wrong. Again: scientifically proven, incontrovertible FACT. Learn It. Live It. Love It.

  • Avatar was shit. A monumental waste of resources and talent. Horner's score was the ONLY thing good about it.

  • I liked From Paris with Love. Sue me.

It's true. But every so often he'd do unbearable oh so right.

I hate heavy metal, trash metal.... all kinds of metal, rap, grunge, girly pop as an excuse for film music.
I hate CDs with nothing but a collection of songs and where a mere sample size snippet of the real soundtrack is in there somewhere.
I generally hate re-recordings (exceptions accepted)
I hate the fact that certain things are being treated as "can't touch this" material. Some soundtrack are as overrated as the Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Doors, Kubrik, Peckinpah or Tarantino.

This thread has gone from shameful, dirty little secrets to full-on manifestos, and is all the worse for it.

Actually, that's pretty much the common opinion around here and hardly the sure-to-be-heretical admission. Most people will probably applaud you. Sad as that may be.

"Stars Wars" ushered in an era of boring film scores that we still haven't escaped. With a few exceptions along the way, of course.

I think EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC is superior to the original film, in every way.

Hayao Miyazaki makes better animated films than Pixar.

I like anchovies on my pizza. Lots and lots of anchovies.

While I've been surprised by some of the admissions on this thread, it has been nice to see that no posters have been ripped for their admissions.

My heretical admission is that I just don't connect to any of Herrmann's scores except for The Ghost And Mrs. Muir. When his music is connected to the movie visuals, I'm okay, but I never listen to his music as a stand-alone listen.

Ditto on that one. I have high regard for Herrmann as a film composer but can't connect at all with his music sans the film. Even the famous pieces like Psycho leave me cold. (Maybe a hot shower would help smile ).

Crazy talk! We're all being remarkably courteous. big grin

    Come on, it's a lighthearted, don't-take-anything-too-seriously thread.

    Now that IS heretical!!

My heretical admission is that I just don't connect to any of Herrmann's scores except for The Ghost And Mrs. Muir.

Nothing wrong with that: I think Herrmann is by nature a pretty cold composer, but "Ghost..." is often profoundly beautiful. I arranged that lovely melancholic Nocturne (or Andante Cantabile) for chamber strings a little while back. My trio/quartet hasn't yet found a suitable occasion for it, but it should be nice when/if we do.

Even the famous pieces like Psycho leave me cold.

No pun intended, naturally. big grin

"I'll abstain...courteously" is a take off a running joke from the musical 1776. HowardL may be one of the few here that might catch it. Hmmm, where has Howard been lately?

I think it's serving its purpose quite well. And I'm just glad to see a lack of argumentative responses.

    Ok, one more admission...

I place TSWLM and FYEO's scores higher than some Barry efforts (not saying which, but the obvious ones are included).
