Wonderful music for a film that was entertaining enough, but not particularly special. Everybody should buy this set, kick back and be awed by one of the masters! Does anybody know if there is any chance of his "Bigger Than Life" ever seeing the light of day?    Posted:   Oct 4, 2011 - 2:01 PM     By:   AlexCope   (Member) I got this box through the SAE deal and have only listened to the first two discs, but I just wanted to give a brief shout-out that I've enjoyed both Across the Wide Missouri and The Man With a Cloak. Not only are the main themes lovely, but the scores themselves are largely focused on their respective melodies, giving each plenty of time to breathe. The theme to Man With a Cloak I found especially striking as it sounds somewhat like Aaron Copland writing for a thriller. Americana with a dark shadow. One thing I wanted to note - some of you might be aware of it - is that one of the MGM shorts scored by Raksin, Main Street Today, is actually available in Volume One of the TCM Esther Williams DVD sets. Though a lot of it is obscured by dialogue and narration, there's some lovely music to be heard in it. If any of you have or can access this set, it's on the Bathing Beauty disc. Hopefully, Warner will eventually release a final set of Esther DVDs (there's four of her MGM musicals left to do, plus a couple of dramas that could warrant inclusion) If they do, they might be able to dig up another Raksin-scored short, Inflation. Across the Wide Missouri was the one I went for to start with and have to say that I really enjoyed it. I will put my hand up and admit that this period is not my favourite for scores, I can't put my finger on why exactly but there is just something about the "sound" of scores from this period which, with several exceptions just don't do anything for me. There were some wonderful themes and melodies present which really had me sitting up taking notice of the score. Mind you with the 4 Bernstein scores I have currently on order maybe my tastes are finally expanding. We will probably see no more releases of his work thanks to so few people buying this set, resulting in it becoming a free giveaway. A great listen and I'll be looking forward to discovering more of these scores (more of the movies are increasingly available which is great from my standpoint).    Posted:   Jan 24, 2012 - 4:09 PM     By:   MusicMad   (Member) I had been looking at this set for some time ... just as long as it's been available, I think, but kept putting off buying it. With the FSM special offer I was sorely tempted and whilst I could have found USD 100's worth of other purchases (without difficulty ) I couldn't work out how it would work re: UK Customs ... it might not have been such a bargain. But I was lucky - I got a sealed copy off a UK seller (on Amazon) and I'm a happy man. It's not a collection I play regularly, or disc after disc - as I've ripped it to my PC and separated out the individual scores I usually pick one score to play and leave it at that. It's very much a slow-burner with each play bringing fresh enjoyment. I've since bought his re-recordings of Laura/The Bad and the Beautiful/Forever Amber - rececntly re-released - and think this is a wonderful disc (despite only one play to date); and I have ordered the OST to The Bad and the Beautiful. And all because I've owned his score to Invitation to a Gunfighter which I think is great ...oh, and his melody for Laura which I have in numerous vocal/instrumental recordings is one of my favourite pieces of music. I must recommend the sleeve notes, penned by Mr. Raksin, on the aforementioned album for Laura et al. ... surely the best I've ever read. Imagine, the works [edit]of one the greatest film score composers being reduced to "free-give-away" gimmicks. (You should feel shame now.) The Bad and the Beautiful and Two Weeks in Another Town should be enjoyed often. Sometimes, when I feel crazy, I run Two Weeks in Another Town, Paris When it Sizzles, and Avanti -- usually I eat a big steak afterwards, and then a puff.
