Just had to say, this is my first time listening to Raksin, and I love him!

Dana,

As far as Raksin on CD is concerned, the CD edition of his RCA LP re-recordings (LAURA/BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL/FOREVER AMBER) preceded those Varese and Rhino OST's to the marketplace.

The film of the first score in the "David Raksin at M-G-M" box set, "Across the Wide Missouri," has been issued as a made-on-demand DVD by the Warner Archive Collection.

I bought this as soon as it came out, and i enjoy it immensely. Raksin is my No. two favorite right after Friedhofer. I think everyone should buy a copy! Any chance of his "Bigger Than Life" ever seeing the light of day?

The film was on TV here in the U.K. a few months ago and I watched it, mostly because the Raksin music on the box-set impressed me so much. Wonderful music for a film that was entertaining enough, but not particularly special. By the way, I think the liner notes for "David Raksin at M-G-M", written by Marilee Bradford, are exceptionally well done.

Raksin is my No. two favorite right after Friedhofer. I was SO happy when i saw this box announced, I bought my set as soon as it came out, and i enjoy immensely. It did not disappoint me. Everybody should buy this set, kick back and be awed by one of the masters!
Does anybody know if there is any chance of his "Bigger Than Life" ever seeing the light of day?

I got this box through the SAE deal and have only listened to the first two discs, but I just wanted to give a brief shout-out that I've enjoyed both Across the Wide Missouri and The Man With a Cloak. Not only are the main themes lovely, but the scores themselves are largely focused on their respective melodies, giving each plenty of time to breathe. The theme to Man With a Cloak I found especially striking as it sounds somewhat like Aaron Copland writing for a thriller. Americana with a dark shadow. Pretty nifty.

Does anyone have a good jpg of the cover art for this release? Google is useless. frown

I picked up this set in the recent (amazing) deal, and though I've yet to listen to it, I've made my way through the excellent booklet.

One thing I wanted to note - some of you might be aware of it - is that one of the MGM shorts scored by Raksin, Main Street Today, is actually available in Volume One of the TCM Esther Williams DVD sets. Though a lot of it is obscured by dialogue and narration, there's some lovely music to be heard in it. If any of you have or can access this set, it's on the Bathing Beauty disc.

Hopefully, Warner will eventually release a final set of Esther DVDs (there's four of her MGM musicals left to do, plus a couple of dramas that could warrant inclusion) If they do, they might be able to dig up another Raksin-scored short, Inflation. This would make sense, as Esther Williams actually appears in that!

Well I had my first taste of this set today after picking it up in the offer a few weeks back. Across the Wide Missouri was the one I went for to start with and have to say that I really enjoyed it. I will put my hand up and admit that this period is not my favourite for scores, I can't put my finger on why exactly but there is just something about the "sound" of scores from this period which, with several exceptions just don't do anything for me.
There were some wonderful themes and melodies present which really had me sitting up taking notice of the score.

Mind you with the 4 Bernstein scores I have currently on order maybe my tastes are finally expanding.

A very impressive introduction to David Raksin.

A very impressive introduction to David Raksin.

We will probably see no more releases of his work thanks to so few people buying this set, resulting in it becoming a free giveaway. More people here probably preferred to spend their money on a "Captain GutBlaster and the Blood Splashers" video game soundtrack, by Grizzly McDreary.

I got this set as a freebie during the SAE Christmas season sale, and after getting "Man With A Cloak" from Warner Archive, was able to listen to that as my first score from this set. A great listen and I'll be looking forward to discovering more of these scores (more of the movies are increasingly available which is great from my standpoint).

I had been looking at this set for some time ... just as long as it's been available, I think, but kept putting off buying it. With the FSM special offer I was sorely tempted and whilst I could have found USD 100's worth of other purchases (without difficulty smile) I couldn't work out how it would work re: UK Customs ... it might not have been such a bargain.

But I was lucky - I got a sealed copy off a UK seller (on Amazon) and I'm a happy man.

It's not a collection I play regularly, or disc after disc - as I've ripped it to my PC and separated out the individual scores I usually pick one score to play and leave it at that. It's very much a slow-burner with each play bringing fresh enjoyment.

I've since bought his re-recordings of Laura/The Bad and the Beautiful/Forever Amber - rececntly re-released - and think this is a wonderful disc (despite only one play to date); and I have ordered the OST to The Bad and the Beautiful.

And all because I've owned his score to Invitation to a Gunfighter which I think is great ...oh, and his melody for Laura which I have in numerous vocal/instrumental recordings is one of my favourite pieces of music.

I must recommend the sleeve notes, penned by Mr. Raksin, on the aforementioned album for Laura et al. ... surely the best I've ever read. I can't recall the last time I laughed out loud reading sleeve notes - simply engrossing and very entertaining.

Thanks, Ron, for the recommendation. I see that the score/film is described as a companion piece to The Bad and the Beautiful so I shall await that one and see if I enjoy it as much as the re-recorded suite. I shall bear it in mind for my next SAE order.

NP: Some Came Running - wonderful!

Mitch.

Here on the FSM Board, people will fight over who it is that will get the next Commando or Friday the 13th limited edition set.

Imagine, the works [edit]of one the greatest film score composers being reduced to "free-give-away" gimmicks. (You should feel shame now.)

The Bad and the Beautiful and Two Weeks in Another Town should be enjoyed often. Sometimes, when I feel crazy, I run Two Weeks in Another Town, Paris When it Sizzles, and Avanti -- usually I eat a big steak afterwards, and then a puff.

Check this, which I ordered last week:

Better hurry. Just sent a note to the FMS, and there are only 10 copies left, and only 1 autographed.

Imagine, the works of the greatest living film score composer being reduced to "free-give-away" gimmicks.

Sadly, David Raksin passed away in 2004, the same summer as Jerry Goldsmith and Elmer Bernstein.

I should have remembered Bob.

The other week, someone posted some interviews with David, and I just started thinking he was still here. Wishful bliss.
