Almost 18 months on, 'there is still no sign of John Barry's non soundtrack project 'The Seasons'. Is this really going to happen?. I would love to see this recorded but at 76, Barry has done his bit and deserves a good retirement, in which case I'll, happily, just enjoy my collection of Barry albums and wish him all the best.

Sure, he's done his bit and can retire with a clear conscience. However, it would also be cool if he could draw inspiration from Morricone, who is 5 years older and still going strong!

If John Barry doesn't ever release any new music, we are still blessed with what he gave us. I hope he is happy and enjoying time with his wife and child. If he does decide to record and release ANYTHING new, I am sure there are many who would love to listen. Count me in !!!

John Barry composes every day...

...music for 1960s James Bond films that will never get made.

A pity for all of us.

Morricone, who is 5 years older and still going strong!

I think Morricone is really exceptional in this respect (and in other respects, too wink), but apart from his strict health regimen, it's also due to the fact that unlike Barry he was – as far as I know – lucky to escape any severe drag on his health (John Barry almost died of a toxic "health drink" at the end of the 1980s).

In 1988, Barry suffered a ruptured esophagus caused by a health tonic he was ingesting that turned out to be toxic. He underwent a a 13-hour operation to repair the damage.

I don't doubt Barry's willingness to compose for films. But he has to do it on his terms, and the modern Hollywood machine does not permit that. It's the way of working, as I understand it, that he's turned his back on, not his love for writing cinematic music.

Morricone works in a completely different industry.

I've sometimes thought Barry could do what John Scott did and go and work in French films, or something like that, where the machine works differently.

I also wondered whether he'd enjoy concept albums based on classic narrative novels. Y'know just as Jeff Wayne did his musical interpretation of War Of The Worlds, Barry does his interpretation of Jane Eyre or Frankenstein. (Barry has spoken of a fondness fo gothic fiction such as Frankenstein.)

Or do that thing of providing scores to old silent films.

Anyway, of Seasons.... Well, quite frankly if it hasn't appeared yet, why would it. Barry's saleability as an independent composer is only going to decline as his last works increasingly become history. And he's not a good self publicist. (This is one aspect which David Arnold does very well. He's much better at keeping himself and his work in the news. Even if it's not like 'headline' news.)

Of course I hope it comes out, but I've kind-of given up on it really.

Cheers

After being a fan and getting used to listening to his wonderful music for over 30 years, I really miss the experience of opening and listening to his new CDs. I have not been able to find another composer who makes music that touches the heart more deeply than Barry. He is truly a musical genius, and hope that he will come back. Come back, Barry!!!!!!!!

How many years has it been since we had Eternal Echoes? You all know that rejected music from whatever film he was fired from. LOL. EE makes listening to ENYA quite enjoyable. Barry must of been truly depressed when putting together EE. I hope this Seasons will be a more joyful experience.

I don't think there is much more in the rejected scores collection from Barry. This will probably new original music. THINK PEPPY Barry. LOL.

Some Barry fans have given up on 'The Seasons' and it's not hard to understand why.Barry mentioned it in the interview he did for Irish radio in June 2007 and again in an article with 'The Irish Times' a year later. However, Jon Burlingham, in an article in Variety on Barry's 75th birthday, in November 2008, said that Barry was in no hurry to complete the project. Earlier this year one of the London free evening papers commented that Paul O'Duffy who produced 'The Living Daylights' and 'Chaplin' had been attached to a Barry project.

Of course, the main thing is his health and the health of his wife, Laurie. However, I stay optimistic and continue to believe that maybe, just maybe ,we'll get a new Barry album in the not too distant future.

If there are to be no new Barry albums then there is a great back catalogue to listen to. We Barry fans are, indeed, blessed to have that.

Another six months have passed and still no news on John Barry's 'The Seasons' album. Even I'm starting to suspect that it isn't going to happen.

Sad.

By judging one of the clips that is on youtube where they walk down to a boat it mya be becaurse he want to be there for his son - being 75 and having a son on 15 years - i would do the same - considerign the fact that his age is so high - he could pass away any moment and if his son soes not have any memories of his dad then it would be No Go.

Family before us score-fans - Always.

Of course Barry deserves to retire and spend time with his family. However, as he mentioned it in a couple of interviews and was working on it, I assume there was a time when he wanted it recorded and released. Things appear to have changed.

I don't think "family" or "write music" have to be mutually exclusive choices.

Look, we can all hallucinate that we know what's going on with Barry but ultimately we don't. My best guess - and it's only a best guess - is that if he had an album deal, he'd be writing The Seasons. Or maybe he has written it and is waiting for one.

Who knows.

Sure, as a Barry fan, I'm sad nothing new has been coming. I mean, Jerry Goldsmith has been dead several years and he's still had new albums (note - plural) released more recently than Barry.

But hey ho, we don't control the universe and John Barry has no obligation to us.

Cheers

Absolutely, Steve but it appears that the labels don't have any obligation to John Barry either, particularly if they don't believe that they'll sell many of his albums.

Anyone know what John Scott has been up to lately? And, when did he work in French films? Thanks.

Nice thread of the past, i assume then MR Barry never did finish or do THE SEASONS?

No one knows for sure I guess except Laurie Barry and perhaps a few other close friends and family. Nic Raine isn't aware of the project and Barry's sister June was uncertain how far he'd got with it when some fans met her in York last October.

We'll just have to wait and see and hope for the best.

Unfinished. He wrote and developed only sketches. Sorry (and end of the story...).

Hopefully more reissues are coming (Howard the duck, Jagged edge and Body Heat).
