There is a YouTube feature on Jeffrey Hunter that features an extended version of the film's RESURRECTION and FINALE not found on the Rhino (from 2:56 to 5:12). I do not know the source of this, but it is authentic and majestic

Erich Kunzel, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra & Mormon Tabernacle Chorus is what it says on the video text

I can't find the video text of this anywhere, but I believe that you are correct. This is the Kunzel recording! The reconstruction is by Daniel Robbins, so no wonder it sounds so good. Thank you.

Sources: 0:00-2:52: Rozsa recording on a Capitol LP (later re-issued on an Angel LP and CD); 2:56-5:12:According to other posts in this thread, it's conducted by Erich Kunzel; 5:25-9:45: "Entr'acte" original film recording conducted by Rozsa.

There was a curious lack of enthusiasm here for that really quite fine Telarc Künzel SACD at the time of its release.

The orchestral theme from the Capitol LP was released both on Angel and DRG. They aren't the same album, since the Angel used the 1950s mono performance of the Quo Vadis? suite pieces, three of them anyway.

There's a Prague Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra performance DDD on a compilation album (not the CoPP). I suppose the place for it in a reconstruction would be after the Entr'Acte maybe? The sheets are already in Prague somewhere:

It's also the version line-wise for the choral SATB church adaptations on Prometheus and Intrada.

I have been listening to the Rhino King of Kings whilst on my way to and from work. I was not particularly enamoured of the film due to the overtly religious story (obviously, since it deals with a religious subject). This rather tainted my being drawn to the music somewhat so I thought I would give it a 'disciplined' listen - not distracted by other concerns.

Well, as others have said, this score is magnificent. The wealth of thematic material is impressive to say the least.

I for one am well pleased to have contributed to the kickstarter and gleefully await the tallow rerecording. If it is anything like S & G, ToB and B-H I will be ecstatic.

Tadlow seems to have quite a good history with both Rozsa and Herrmann's music. Too bad Obsession sold so low, would LOVE to see more Bernard rerecordings (anything except North by Northwest, Psycho, Fahrenheit 451...I think those are well represented).

I find new inspiration every time I listen to the Rhino KoKs (and the movie was pretty schlocky except maybe for the Sermon on the Mount scene...definitely ain't no Ben Hur imo).

And if you go to the other side to see the Bradford Dillman obit, William has posted a rare interview in which he mentions Jeffrey Hunter's problems at having been cast in the role.

That's an understatement. When I watched the film some time ago I was very aware of captain Pike from the OS Star Trek(being a Trek afficiando of sorts)smile

I find a lot to like in KoK. The Sermon, Christ's entry, attack on the fortress, last supper. Even the crucifixion, though a little tame even by the standards of the time, is well done, with the camera affixed to the top of the crucifix. Hunter is good, and the general atmosphere of reverence is well maintained throughout. I'm aware of the faults, but have no difficulty overlooking them for the sake of the whole. The film is well liked generally these days even by critics (less so at the time), and I'm a little surprised it doesn't get more of a break in this forum.

I think it's far from a terrible film. But I can't see watching it for more than the isolated score track again any time soon (I've seen it twice). That's not even considering how much better a movie Ben Hur was...but then that is a pretty high bar.

I actually like Greatest Story Ever Told better than KoK (tough for me to choose between those scores though), but that's mostly due to the use of so much of the New Testament quotes. The former is a really looong movie lol!

I think the maestro put it best when he said KoK had its moments movie-wise.

"Greatest story"? I remember sitting down with 3 Christians one night to watch this on TV. Within half an hour the 3 were asleep and I wasn't far behind. One critic called it a 4 hour soporific. Couldn't have been more spot on for my money.
