2) It wasn't so long ago that people around these parts were somehow convinced that Spielberg's eventual replacement for Williams would be Hans Zimmer. Remember that?

I see your thought and raise you another: Maybe Zimmer was his choice, but Zimmer either was too busy or turned it down? Seems you're also pulling at nothing straws. ;-)

... What?

I just generally prefer Silvestri in more intimate mode.

Yavar

I was so bummed that his last few scores for Zemeckis have been total borefests, almost entirely absent of inspiration. That being said, Ready Player One could be just the ticket to get Silvestri cooking again before The Avengers 15 or whatever.

I hope it's something along the lines of his famous 1980's action/adventure scores. I miss that Silvestri.

This is true...Jerry Goldsmith said it in an interview..that Spielberg was there note for note when scoring Poltergeist and Twilight Zone. That he knows what he is looking for.

Joe Dante ran the scoring sessions on TWILIGHT ZONE. Everyone else was keeping their distance from the accident.

And Spielberg has a high opinion of Michael Giacchino. He was the one responsible for upgrading the score for THE LOST WORLD video game to a full orchestra after hearing MG's demos.

Opinions change, though. Giacchino had/has such promise then.

I don't believe Hans Zimmer would ever give up a chance to work with Spielberg. Sort of like Giacchino and Disney, Zimmer would never let go.

I wanted Williams to score this, but Silvestri is a good choice too, I like him a lot!

I know this doesn't really have anything to do with this topic, but I love Miller's segment in TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE, it's fantastic!

Since Silvestri is a terrific composer who seems underappreciated by the industry in an era where people seem to only want the newest (or most Zimmer-y) composer, I am thrilled by this news (though, as always, somewhat disappointed that we won't get to hear Williams' take on this project).

I have no doubt that Silvestri will bring his A-game -- IMHO, Bridge of Spies is Newman's best score since WALL-E, -- and I feel like Spielberg is the kind of director that no composer would dare disappoint, especially since Williams is such an unbelievably hard act to follow.

I think I know what RPO is about (there was an X-FILE ep with the same title) but what is THE PAPERS about?

Anyway, I love that Silvestri is scoring this. As an earlier post noted he wrote a terrific ACTION score for the awful LARA CROFT...
THE FIRST AVENGER was superb and AVENGERS had some strong, memorable themes.

its a win-win for score fans !

I hope for the best, but I've only liked one score by him since 2004 (though I've yet to hear "A Christmas Carol").

THE PAPERS (formerly titled THE POST) is about the Washington Post and the publication of the Pentagon Papers, with Meryl Streep as Katherine Graham and Tom Hanks as Ben Bradlee (the role that won Jason Robards his first Oscar; Bradlee Jr. was played by John Slattery in SPOTLIGHT).

I suspect READY PLAYER ONE will have more score than THE PAPERS.

I haven't been gigantically impressed by Silvestri lately but maybe Spielberg will coax a great score out of him.
Have you listened to Cosmos? That is my most recently gigantically impressed by Silvestri experience.

I am so happy that Silvestri is making a return to the mainstreams.

I wasn't aware he'd left (Allied may have been underwhelming but no one could consider that a tiny indie movie).

Disappointed that it looks exactly like every other CGI blockbuster out there. The aesthetic is very "Transformers-esque." I'll pass, but I do look forward to hearing Silvestri's score whenever that's released.

The Iron Giant, Freddy Krueger, the DeLorean from Back From The Future and the Lightcycles from Tron... smile

I see the Delorean there. Please let there be a "Back to the Future" score reference.

Also, please let there be K.I.T.T. in there.

And since the Iron Giant is in there (and somebody said Speilberg said the Iron Giant will have a big role in it), please let there be Kamen homages.
