I did know of these....that is why I applied to Fox Music to get their permission to get copies made...but they refused. But I will try again...

I guess it's safe to assume this inquiry was again unsuccessful since the next Goldsmith recording is confirmed to not be The Chairman. Bummer, as I know it is one that both James and Luc really want done.

I've updated the Damnation Alley comments in my first post to reflect Doug Fake's revelation about Damnation Alley, set to be released by Intrada later today:
"For Goldsmith fans, this is a really cool project. A world premiere of an incredible score in its entirety featuring some of his most ferocious 70's era sci-fi action writing! It began as a pipe dream of Roger's who wondered if we could get Fox on board and then get Nick to dig deep into the vaults and find every roll and then get Mike to do ambitious restorations of the entire orchestral multi-track session masters for the first time ever and then locate Jerry's sketches and scores and engage a synth expert like Leigh Phillips to newly perform the long missing electronics and then somehow have me find a way to pay for everything (haha!) and yet somehow it all came together so everyone could finally enjoy Jerry's most elusive big action score in it's entirety at last... with several previously unreleased tracks including a riveting never-before-heard cue for a scene dropped from the finished film. I sure hope you fans find the efforts worthwhile. I did. It's truly an exciting listen!"

I had previously written: "Damnation Alley (1977) -- At least most of the synth tracks have been confirmed lost ever since Varese included a good number of cues from this score on their Goldsmith at Fox Box. There has been some talk of simply re-recording the missing synth tracks, but so far no one has actually gone to the trouble of doing so, and I'm not 100% certain that all of the orchestral/acoustic recording survives."

I was keeping a list of titles that are lost and what not, too, on my current defunct Rejected Film Scores website. Keep in mind this is out-of-date:

Legend (1985) -- Similar to Link, a "complete" unmentionable in mediocre sound quality exists, but James Fitzpatrick has commented on this board that when he produced the expanded album for Silva Screen in the 90s he used every surviving scrap of the score and to his knowledge nothing else survives in good quality.

Late to this party I know, but -- in the 90s someone I knew had a DAT of the Legend score, which contained a few additional cues not heard on the Silva CD. One really stood out to me -- a darkly beautiful cue which incorporated the "The Dress Waltz" theme. The other noteworthy cues were a brief (maybe 60 second) Omen-esque cue, and the unused music Goldsmith wrote for the frying pan fight.

I don't what source this DAT had been dubbed from -- but it sounded very good. (No, I do not have a copy.)

Is this someone still with us and might they supply the DAT to one of our specialty labels? smile

LEGEND instilled a particular passion in me over the passing years to get every available reincarnation/reiteration/unmentionable over the past 32 years for the amateur assemblage of something "complete."

Probably the most exhaustive version I've come across occupies 34 tracks over 2 CDRs (74:53 + 50:46 = 125:39).
I've only listened to it once so far, so I can't comment about completeness. But there are what seemed to me to be some "unused" cues, early versions of cues, a few incomplete (botched) cues, as well as the expected cues. I was always hoping to find a really extended version of the lushly-orchestrated "The Unicorns" cue, but none was found. The sound seemed pretty good to my old ears, but for one thing. There was an inherent but noticeable low level HUM in the cues. So perhaps some audio wizard like Mike Mattesino would have to de-hum it all. As much as I understand it, removing HUM is a particularly difficult job to do without affecting the audio quality. Maybe there is better software to do it today since I last checked years ago.

Submitted for your approval...from The Burbella Zone....

Exactly. That someone may still have it, maybe have other missing stuff, and could have links to other people, etc. He or she could be a mini gold mine.

Not exactly at the top of everyone's "Want List", but I wish there were more of Fate is the Hunter to listen to.

Yeah, but blame Jerry and the director because I'm pretty sure what Intrada released was the complete score.

Jerry's infamous rejected score for The Public Eye has been found and is being worked on for release.

From the webmaster of Jerry Goldsmith Online:

Good news on this. I checked with MRT and although he didn’t have any tapes himself a DAT was sent to JG at the time and has been found by Carol and the score is being worked on for release by a label who releases JG soundtracks quite a lot. But be warned how long it will take to do the paperwork on it is another matter so don’t hold your breath.

Another film music miracle!

"Take Her, She's Mine (1963) -- Varese reported the tapes for this were damaged beyond repair in the liner notes for their Goldsmith at Fox box. Perhaps more recent technology would change this assessment?"

It seems the answer was: YES! Chris Malone to the rescue! He painstakingly restored the previously-unsalvageable, wow-ridden original recording, released today by Intrada:
http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.12179/.f?sc=13&category=22848

And it sounds great! It seems that a bit of the score remained unsalvageable, but we still have gotten more ("nearly all") than we ever expected:
"There's only a handful of Goldsmith scores that have yet to be released in any form, and the music elements for this title were long thought damaged beyond use. But with advances in technology and the meticulous work of restoration expert Chris Malone, Intrada is able to present nearly all of Goldsmith's score in stereo. Malone had to restore the audio of each channel separately to get the wondrous results heard here. Rather than compromise the naturally wide instrumental spread, which was never intended for a stereo mix, Intrada also offers a mono presentation of the program as heard in the film."

P.S. I also finally removed The Reincarnation of Peter Proud, since (while original elements are lost, like with Seconds) Intrada did release an official edition of the complete score in music-only form.

Yes, to get those four long hoped for titles within the space of a year is just astounding. What great dedication, perseverance, and love for this artform from Intrada! Fantastic!

I guess Black Patch (1957) and The Man (1972) are pretty definitely lost, since Intrada is planning to newly record both of them -- details at their Kickstarter page here:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/129145902/black-patch-the-man-jerry-goldsmith-new-recording

Pretty neat that the original recording of The Public Eye was discovered and premiered by Intrada recently...that makes five total Goldsmith premieres from them in the past year or so, and now they are keen to add two more with this Kickstarter...

@ Yavar:
Yavar: "Link (1986) -- True, a "complete" unmentionable in mediocre sound quality does exist, but Intrada searched for decent sources on the complete score for years before they finally reissued the existing album presentation because they couldn't find any."

I don't understand. Why "Link" is lost? The score survived, had been released and the quality and mix are good. I would remove it from the "lost-list". Besides I (nearly) always prefer original recordings mono or not, superb quality or not. Re-recordings, especially from Williams and Goldsmith I would count as "lost".

Besides I would like to know how many Goldsmith scores are left for a release, including the "probably destroyed" ones.

This thread is about what's lost *in complete form* (that just doesn't fit in the thread title) -- Link only exists in good sound in the original album program. There is an unmentionable out there which has the missing cues -- but in poor sound quality. So poor that neither Intrada nor LLL considered those otherwise unreleased cues worthy of inclusion, from that inferior source.

Re-recordings, especially from Williams and Goldsmith I would count as "lost".

Did you read my first post in this thread? That's why I list QBVII, The Salamander, and Hour of the Gun as "lost" despite the fine Tadlow re-recordings. I even technically listed Damnation Alley because most of the synth elements remain lost and they were re-done for the Intrada release of the score (which was otherwise the original recording).

Besides I would like to know how many Goldsmith scores are left for a release, including the "probably destroyed" ones.

Then maybe this older thread is for you -- I've continued to update the list as more comes out:
https://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=90657&forumID=1&archive=0

Or, if you care mostly about things which have had NO release (i.e. you don't care about things which got a release of any kind even if incomplete), this thread of potential premieres might interest you more:

Thanks for the hints, Yavar. I missed the sentence, that you don't count re-recordings. Well okay, "Link" is not complete, but I'm happy with the LLL-release. And you are a very lucky man: so much "Goldies" had been released and LLL and Intrada are not finished yet. Good hunt for the last possible releases!

That's perfectly fair. I like the score more than most and, having heard the unmentionable, I know the unreleased cues are all good too. As with Legend, if they were discovered in better sound someday and released officially, I would be there day one for purchase.

And you are a very lucky man: so much "Goldies" had been released and LLL and Intrada are not finished yet. Good hunt for the last possible releases!

Varese has been going strong this past year too, expanding Goldsmith scores at a faster rate than they ever have before. I know how lucky I (and all Goldsmith fans) have been lately, believe me! An embarrassment of riches. I even finally got SPYS complete, a score which many loathe but I find to be a ton of fun.
