I too never thought I would see this score on CD. I saw the film when it came out. Wonderful Tiomkin score. Now 56 years later, I'll have the music! Thanks Intrada!
Watched this film so many times. My Dad loved John Wayne films and got into film music listening to films like this. Always surprised an album for this never happened. Damn shame this is not stereo. If it had been I would have picked this up. Too much to ask really. Oh well I will remember those days of sitting with my Dad and watching this and many other westerns over and over.

You won't buy a premiere Tiomkin western in excellent sound quality because it's "only" in mono? We are very lucky to have this classic Tiomkin score in ANY condition!
Well, I've never seen the film, like some (but not all) Tiomkin, but I agree about the negatives - if the album is not for you, don't diss the thing! I'm VERY happy you Golden Age dudes got a grail and I applaud Intrada's efforts here - sounds like Doug really put a lot of hard work behind this, and that's nothing to ignore. Hell, any film music that makes it to disc and gets any attention should be applauded if you really love this stuff....
I recall someone suggesting there might be a "story" behind the length of time to get this released.
Can anyone enlighten me if there are any juicy details in the work involved?
Alternatively, have there been any previous discussions on this forum about the process involved in getting a soundtrack CD into the market (i.e. from initial idea, research into tapes, licences, restoration, artwork design, liner note research, etc.)? I would be interested in learning about some behind the scenes information.
I don't get it. I listed to the samples and was unimpressed. And my son tells me that when he and his sister were watching the movie they stopped it several times to say how terrible it was.
My aunt Gertie and uncle Sid never much liked the film either. I thought I'd mention it, just in case you're interested to know.

[sigh] To me this just makes no sense at all. A true film music lover should be happy to hear a classic film score whatever the condition, but this release sounds amazing from the samples. Passing because it is "only" mono is like a film buff saying he won't watch CASABLANCA or CITIZEN KANE because they are "only" in black & white or skipping SEVEN SAMURAI or AMELIE because they are"only" subtitled and not in English. It's a stupid and short-sighted prejudice.
In addition to buying the score let's all chip in a buck or two to send Douglas Fake and his team a bottle of wine. Or something. To thank them for giving us a score that's really special.

Just because it sounds good enough for you doesn't mean it sounds good enough for someone else. We all have our own threshold of what we find acceptable. I don't have a problem watching B&W movies, I prefer sub-titles, but mono recordings are so underwhelming their not enjoyable. It's like I'm listening to music with cotton in my ears. Fine for some not fine for others.
I can quite easily enjoy a film with average picture quality (or B&W), as long as the sound quality is excellent.
But if the sound is poor, then that spoils it.
So I can see the logic in not enjoying something in mono, because it does somewhat lose the depth and richness of a high quality stereo master or more modern recordings. And there's no visual distraction when listening to a CD, thereby emphasing the need for a top-notch listening experience.
I am thrilled about this release for the mere fact that so many of my fellow FSM members are thrilled about it, Of course I recall the movie but I was never a Western fan until I fell in love with Rowdy Yates on Rawhide. I will definitely give this one a try. The samples are fantastic.
As far as the naysayers and poopooers go, just realize that these members are our own version of the common internet troll. Ignore and they tend to disappear.

Reminds me of what my composer friend told me about his agent. "The agent will listen to anything that meets his criteria of state of the art sound quality. He puts on his headphones and if there is even an iota of sound difficulty he stops it and tells you to do it again, regardless of the content. He has submitted music he hated if it passed this technical hurtle."
We stared at each other for a while and then I said "Explains a lot of film music these days."
A lot of great movies were enjoyed by millions of people around the world when they didn't even have sound. And those same millions, after sound came in, had no trouble enjoying a lot of great movies even though they were in black and white. And all the while, people were thrilling to recordings of the world's greatest music and musicians, even though the discs were monophonic.
Great is great, period. If all that matters is whether something's in stereo, then why bother listening to film music at all? There are plenty of purveyors of hip-hop out there who will be happy to accommodate your desire.

...and of course all modern recordings are audiophile. Many recordings these days feature so little channel separation and smashed dynamics that they are easily excelled in sound quality by early acoustic recordings. Truly great-sounding recordings are a rare "breed"....
I think Intrada can't be applauded too much for this release - particularly for including all the vocals. This must be copyright nightmare - at least in the US...
OVER THE MOON! Ordered Immediately. THANK YOU INTRADA- Congratulations on releasing and producing this wonderful score! It must have been an intense effort.
