I just had this conversation with a buddy of mine not too long ago saying Demolition Man and Dennis the Menace are actually not that bad compared to most films I see nowadays. Maybe some films age like fine wine! MV "Yeah, I do... TEDDY BEAR!" Personally, I would probably hold the same opinion of the film now as i did then. B grade fluff. But the score...as epic now as it was then. That whole opening sequence is chill inducing. As much as I would like to believe the wink is a hint... Demolition Man is certainly one of those scores all of us have pretty much written off as a Varese perpetual property. Say we're wrong! Say we're wrong! Happy to hear about Deep Rising. I've never seen the movie, but the current cd is brisk and exciting fun. I look forward to discovering the depth of the complete recording!

This goes back to the Maleficent discussion. Just because it's orchestral doesn't make it good or better than the droning RC junk of today. There were plenty of boring orchestral scores before Zimmer came onto the scene with his new sound design. No one in this thread has said that the reason why they think this score is better than today's stuff is because it's orchestral. This isn't a orchestra vs synth thing.

Some of the re-releases are both welcome and unnecessary, so you're right, Mike. I was just thinking about how most of the scores I really want in longer form now (Small Soldiers, LA Confidental, Air Force One, Starship Troopers) are Varese titles. With so many others, I feel like just adding two extra tracks from the expanded sets to the existing releases and callin' it a day.

Demolition Man was good back in 1993, too, though. Dennis The Menace, on the other hand... Demolition Man came out when I first noticed music in the film that wasnt on album and experienced dissapointment in an album. DM, along with Cliffhanger, are examples of when I started a "Holy Grail" list. Since my ears have been my dominant sense for entertainment, my interest in film music was stronger than the film. So hearing the second part of Dies Irae in the film and haven gotten so used to enjoying music outside of the film, started the ball rolling. Been wanting to hear the expanded bits of DM for 21 years and hope it realizes one day. However, given that its Varese, a low priority one and from a composer who isnt as bold a seller as Goldsmith, I'm less hopeful for DM. Ditto for McNeeley's Terminal Velocity. Another B -movie that has been forgotten, but damn! To think of all that exciting music just laying to waste in the vaults.

But...it was only a ..."simple question."

Its Deep Rising. How do I know? Because Doug banned me for asking a simple question if we needed more of it than what was released. In posing your flippant, rhetorical question on the site of a dedicated producer who does nothing but toil to bring us more unreleased music, you insulted his life's work, inside his very own home. What were you expecting to happen, you colossal tit? To be fair, questioning the validity of a Deep Rising expansion isn't exactly questioning Doug's life's work, especially since the guy who posed that question is apparently an avid Intrada customer. Anyway, I for one am very happy about that expansion, this was a minor Holy Grail of mine, there some supremely badass statements of the themes missing from the inital release.

I would like to say I find it fun when labels give clues once in a while. Makes this a bit more fun for all of us sitting at home and I really like hearing MUCH more knowledgable people discuss why they think it might be this or that as you guys and gals know SO much more than me. Everyone keeps saying Deep Rising. I better go re-watch it as it's been years since I've seen it. I think I did enjoy it though.

Oh hell yeah I am there for Deep Rising. Is it in the same league as Wind & the Lion? Nope. But it was then, and is now, a solid action adventure score, and, like the movie, was designed to be FUN. Not art, but FUN. It was released back in the days when FSM admittedly went after releases they deemed "not worthy" with obnoxious fanboy glee ( Kaplans, anyone? ) So, yeah, it was in vogue to take a crap all over this or that score if it dared not reach for the heights of an Alien, for example. But the music is a lot better than many would give it credit for. I've always enjoyed the movie, and the score. So, good news that it seems to be getting an expanded release.

I see what you mean about the rudeness of it. Still, I wouldn't have thought one or two naysayers on one CD could affect a successful label owner like Doug. But then I'm not a label owner myself, am I Looks to me like the comment in question on the Intrada board was a case of the "straw that broke the camel's back". I've read various comments over the years and there seems to be more negative ones with each passing year. If I was in Doug's place, haven gone through all the time and energy to please people by making albums available, only to see more and more criticism: the kind that doesnt read as constructive, but often cold and harsh, I too might in a moment of emotion get to a boiling point. It would be like the family cook getting more lip for whats wrong with the meals time and time again and one day snapping. That shits gotta hurt. Some people dont know or care to think first about what they choose to project. Theres a lot of people on these boards that dont appear to see album producers as people with feelings, nor do they see how small scale our little community it is. We are a unigue community, but given the nature of Internet Etiquit, a select few dont appear to see those who make available what we've all longed for for YEARS ( and may not otherwise get to experience) as humam beings. These folks may not likely speak to so directly to in person, unless they were sociopaths. I have a lot of respect and empathy for Doug and the gang. Despite rampant criticism toward them in cold, short and sometimes blatantly aggressive ways, they STILL keep on course. By all means offer constructive criticism, but check yourself first and dont be a dick!
