Caught the last 45 minutes of the original last night-Godzilla-54. After seeing it again, after a few years. I like the new one even more. Because they made the new one with more of the feeling of this very well done first one, not like the lighter ones that came later. That attempt in itself was a admirable gamble, that apparently has not really failed. Both are fine films and I feel are the best of the GODZILLA FILMS.

Did anyone figure in the money lost on countless unsold Godzilla and Muta toys? big grin If anyone wants to see a film with real emotion and a far superior score see HTTYD 2. wink

There's no money lost on Muta toys because there's nothing called a Muta in Godzilla. wink

Dude, what are you gonna do when the movie hits 500M? big grin

(1) That's how memorable they were. wink
(2) Jump for joy the studio made a 50 million dollar profit. Not counting the 100 million loss on the toy line. big grin

1) The term is MUTO or M.U.T.O. It's an acronym. "Muta" sounds like somebody's name.

2) Still trying way too hard, I see. By your logic, DoFP won't break even because the cheques/checks they wrote for that cast and the film's budget and the promotion were larger than Godzilla's. wink

I thought MUTO's was that mint candy sold in rolls.

So Godzilla will have even less screen time. big grin

Of course one monster isn't enough. I already call this a 2 hour toy commercial. wink
Actually what I wanted to see was some actual fights. Not the before and after. roll eyes

Quit whining, dude! There will definitely be more monster fights in the sequel. You're obviously one of those guys who's never satisfied. If you get the XXL popcorn and Coke in the theater, you eat it all and drain the cup and think "I should've gotten the XXXL combo!" LOL!

You know I was disappointed in Godzilla as well. Originally I thought maybe I just have been soured on all current films but was thoroughly blown away by HTTYD2 so it's not that.

As I reflected on the movie experience I found that my main gripe was the titular character wasn't the main focus of the story. He was just sort of "there" and saves the day. There was little to no reaction to how massive and monstrous Godzilla was by any characters and the main focus of the story was uncovering the whole MUTO origin. Godzilla shows up out of nowhere and the navy just follows him around like he's a whale or something. Then he surfaces and.....we cut away to the boring human characters. There's an amazing lead up to a battle with the MUTO at the airport and....we cut away to the boring human characters.

Either the screenwriters didn't understand the idea of why and when you should cut away from the action or the director Edwards was just too inexperienced at handling big budget films to make the focus of this film Godzilla. I hated the 1998 film but at least it was about Godzilla or that giant lizard thing supposed to be Godzilla.

Desplat's score also didn't resonate with me but I'm a big fan of a lot of his scores so I will revisit and see if it helps.

Yep, agree with your assessments. My understanding is the director cut away from the fight sequences on purpose. It was an absurd thing to do and there is no defense for it. Imagine if we start an Indiana Jones chase sequence then cut away to the aftermath? I don't want wall to wall action, but I do want good action sequences. The final was dull as nails too.

I think cutaways can be effective. I remember Fincher's cutaway when the first mature alien reveals itself in Alien3 with Goldenthal's massive horns shrieking. It was ominous.

I first cutaway at the airport I could sort of forgive because Edwards showed parts of the battle via a character watching the recap on tv making it more realistic. But when he kept doing it, it seemed like he way shying away from the spectacle that Godzilla should have been

I will say it again- the film wasn't really about Godzilla who had as much presence as Brian Cranston. The MUTO should have been the sub plot and not the other way around. There was a cool story somewhere in the screenplay but it just never came out.

The odd thing is that the film wasn't "bad" in that awful way Godzilla 1998 was with inappropriate humor and terrible acting. It was just sort of....there.

.

This is where he lost me. The prior ten minutes beautifully set up the first big action sequence in the film, and he dropped the ball. (Some grainy seconds on a TV screen doesn't count)
