Airport is a recording done for LP and Airport '75 is the OST.

Hi Jonathan

Are you sure about this? I always thought both were re-recordings as the tracks on the Airport 1975 LP & CD sound quite different from the versions heard in the film. One major example is "Suspense, Approach and Landing" which has a low key ending in the film, while the Album version ends with a fortissimo coda. A re-recording would be in line with other MCA releases from the period such as "Earthquake" and "Jaws".

I've listened to the album of '75 and watched the film enough times to be almost 100% convinced that they are different recordings.

Haha of course! Add some purple in there and then it could match that wonderful color palette of '75 wink

Airport is a recording done for LP and Airport '75 is the OST. I think that is the simple explanation why one sounds better than the other. That recording of Airport has always sounded really good.

I'm pretty sure Airport 75 was also a rerecording done specifically for album. Much like Jaws, Earthquake, and countless others of that era. Unfortunately I just think it suffers from that overall muddy sounding recording that was inherit on all those MCA recordings of the time. I,ve held off purchasing any of the subsequent CD reissues in the hope that Intrada will one day release the original tracks.

Oh I didn't see that Filmscoremonty post. Yeah, what he said. smile

And I believe I have some AIRPORT music not on the original album. Probably others do, too...

Yes, Airport '70 is a re-recording, so that explains why the CD sounds so great, but if the Airport '75 LP/CD is also a re-recording, than there must be an explanation why the Japan CD sounds the way it does...it's certainly not a stellar recording, that's for sure. I can only think that perhaps Universal Japan had access to lower generation master-tapes or perhaps it was originally recorded in the studio on 8-Track tape?

Can't wait for December!

That was last December, but never fear, they were recently re-reissued.

Sorry my bad, I didn't notice Airport 75 was an LP recording too.

Does anybody else on the forum own the original MCA AIRPORT '75 Japan CD and the new 2013 Japan reissue CD? Really curious to know if there are any audio differences? I doubt it, but you never know...
