On this set, there's an alternate version of the main theme music for Superman: The Movie that sounds remarkably like the one for Superman IV but can't remember where it is.

It's disc 2 track 11, “Prelude and Main Title,” an earlier version of the main title march which was used by Sandy Courage as the basis for the main title for Superman IV.

My stuff (most of it):

Here's another good web page on the Superman score:

I listened to it tonight and I'm afraid it's not it, it must be another one.

I know you wrote that this was "most of it", but you must include MAN OF STEEL, which is imo the best Superman--make that super-hero--score of all time since Supes '78.

You also should have included a "token" Superman comic in your display. wink

"Man of Steel" is the worst super hero score I have ever had the displeasure of enduring.

Not a single heroic theme...all typical Zimmer blather.

If I had drenched myself with decades of Golden Age Karo Syrup, I would probably agree with you.

Gotta say, Batman vs Superman was actually worse to me. Just too much freakin noise. I've found that more than half of Man of Steel has grown on me quite a bit over the years.

A tip of the hat to your warming up to MAN OF STEEL, but sadly the following remains true:

Jim, assertion is not fact, not yours, not Ron's, not anyone's. Opinions are opinions, everybody has one, and everyone's opinion is right for them. But "true" it's not.

To change the topic a bit back to the original subject, I still think that the Blue Box is the best CD collection. Thank you FSM for doing it.

Regarding Man of Steele, I think the addition of JW's theme would have been an improvement to the movie. It was calling for some kind of majestic theme for Superman.

I thought this was a good a day as any to resurrect this one, as it was mentioned in the happily, endless LLL questions thread.
Of course we all came for part 1 and it has never, nor possibly could (??) sound or be presented better.
How about the sequels though?
Part 2 may he my least favorite - it's fascinating to read about, sound quality is incredible, but score is overall reliant on revisiting fragments of Williams motifs, and is overlong. That said, it still gets more plays than anything Djwadi or his ilk have written in this house.
Part 3 is more fun, a tad more focused, and certainly more compact.
Part 4 is a freaking goldmine of great stuff, I probably already preached that gospel in this thread. Proof that a shitty movie with what we THINK is an inconsequential score is not always the whole story.
The Ron Jones I honestly, shamefully play very little, but do keep trying to give it time. No connection to the animated show, so...
The extras - grateful to have, but visit them less. As a die-hard Moroder fan, hate to say it's his worst record, Part 3, and it should've been the biggest draw for me. Hey, the king of disco paired with the king of the road - we can't lose! :-So, I'd pay $120 x 2 for thus set again anyday, what say you, gold people?
Looking forward to that chorus of crickets!

II's score was obviously rushed and definitely suffers from the low budget no name orchestra (although the FSM remaster definitely improves that to a point). Oh if only Lester and Williams had played nice.... >_<

III is...forgettable. Just forgettable.

IV is an amazingly strong effort considering JW had to farm it out to Alexander Courage due to his Boston Pops committments (either that or Cannon got cheap). Plus the fact that Courage was stuck with the in-decline Graunke Symphony for the most part in a situation that eerily forshadows Goldsmith's debacle on Total Recall.

And as for Superman The Movie...well it and Elfman's Batman remain the two finest comic book movie scores ever recorded. And both are on cd in (mostly) stellar sound. Still don't know why Chris Malone kept going on about noise reduction when the box came out though. This was remastered from a 35mm mag source and if you've ever read the liner notes to a Mercury Living Presence recording, you'll know that the whole reason they used 35mm mag was to reduce the additional noise and hiss inherent in tape sources.

Thanks for some insightful comments LD!
I was overjoyed playing part one on the blue box - while the Rhino set was a godsend at the time, there were serious audio problems I never could get past.
The Thorne scores get a bit of extra credit from me (or maybe it's just due the remaster ) for getting a relatively large sound from 50 players. ...at CTS, nonetheless! Or, perhaps that worked in its favor?
IV is such a fascinating train wreck, even more when reading that it WAS so much more then the 87min. turd we ended up with.
Poor Cannon. Recommend the excellent documentary 'Electric Boogaloo ' to everyone here with the slightest interest in the Hollywood machine. Not much about Superman we haven't heard (or covered in the Blue Booklet), just a truly entertaining documentary.

Totally agree. Love them both and listen to them frequently.

He’s just a grumpy man that should be more appreciative of these things actually getting out in the first place.

What a wonderful world we live in where most of our Holy Grails have seen spectacular releases that we would have never imagined or thought possible!

I learned that lesson with the Spock's Brain episode on the Star Trek TOS set.
